The problem is merse not many knew that it was aimed at a person who is your good friend and one you do have lots of jokes with.
Yes I'm well aware of your fine efforts to rid the club of Roberts once you came to the same place I had been since the first day he came to town.
My only reason for ever reminding you about Roberts and how you did support him, was because you failed to listen to what I was saying. You preferred at that time to just call me small minded and made many attacks on me based on where I live.
If you had taken the time to really listen to the real concerns I had as to why Roberts needed to have control of our club and saw past the shinny new stadium, then you could have been there with the rest of us from the start, who stood up and shouted to anyone who would listen, that Roberts was just a conman using our club to try and get rich quick.

Paul Buckle's league record as a manager. 2008-9 P49 W25 D14 L10 2007-8 P48 W27 D8 L13 TOTAL: P97 W52 D22 L25 Add in two fine FA Cup runs, one FA Trophy run to the final and the figures would be even better. Please name for me the last manager to accomplish that sort of record at PlainmoorIs that a question for me? Percy Mackrill had a very similar record 1925-27. He went on to have a rubbish record in the League though, which tended to support the views of those who stuck by their guns that he was a lucky manager in a pub league, whilst the mindless majority were busy clapping happily and nodding their heads just because he happened to get us into the Football League.

quote] Selective memory Dave, is what allows you to throw "supporting Roberts" at me whilst ignoring the FACT that I was one of the so called "Gang of Four" who later called a vote of No Confidence in the guy. I really have never wanted to burst your bubble merse, but if you believe that the action of the GANG OF FOUR played any part in Roberts leaving, then I would suggest its you who is suffering from some grandeur of self importance. Lets be honest here shall we and look at the real facts and the reasons Roberts went when he did, but trust me on this a few fans calling for a vote of no confidence played no part what so ever no matter what claims you or anyone else makes. Torbay had a mayor who was sending out very loud messages that there was free land to be had in Torbay for any worthwhile developments, land that was public land, but Bye and his over large ego were just looking to make a name for himself as the mayor who brought new and exciting things to the bay. Roberts and Walker had come to Torbay some time before you or anyone else who are TUFC fans ever heard their names, they had been to the site used by the rugby club and could clearly see what a prime site it was and to get their hands on it they knew they would have to try an offer the mayor something he could not refuse. A brand new stadium, new grounds for the rugby and crickets clubs, other sports facilities so badly needed in the Bay and in order to be in a position to put their offers forward they needed a vehicle and TUFC the largest sports club in the Bay was the obvious choice. There was no interest in the club or its fortunes, the only important thing was the rec site and the plans for a hotel and shopping complex. The plan was sold to Saddler who must have believed getting the rec site was in the bag and therefore was happy to provide Roberts and co with his pension money so Roberts could get his hands on TUFC. Roberts had no money of his own and in order to meet the monthly payments of agreed installments to buy the club completely he had to take the money from the club itself each month. He was well aware he had to reduce the out goings at the club as he just needed to keep it going until Bye had given him the green light on the rec site. Roberts is on record stating that once he got his complex build on the rec site he was giving the club to the fans and would have done so and walked away without a care what state the club was in at that time. His problems began when stories about him appeared in the Herald Express and then the mayor had no choice but to take some backward steps and this was a real problem for Roberts as he needed to get things tied up as soon as possible because he knew he would struggle to keep the club afloat. Without the club he stood no chance of ever getting the rec site and as things worsened on the pitch and he was aware debts were starting to pile up at the club, it became clear he was unlikely to now get the rec site. He was finding it hard to meet the payments to Bateson and was unable to raise the money and he found himself complexly backed against a wall with nowhere to go. So no chance of getting the rec site he had no need to own TUFC, his dream was over and he saw sense and got out, as I said at the time and will say again, Roberts only ever wanted the rec site and cared nothing about what would happen to our club. Trust me if he believed there was still a chance to get the rec site we may well have tried to hang on that bit longer, but he knew it was not going to happen and him leaving had nothing to do with anything some fans might have been doing. FACT. Foot note. Bye has yet to deliver any worthwhile development in the Bay and no its not because of an local objections, he is just a talker who had some vision, maybe he's Roberts brother or something.

Correct me if I'm wrong Dave, but wasn't one of these stories about the Gang of Four and TUST's opposition to the bloke?

Only toward the end and not in the beginning, as at that time some of the gang of four were still supporting him and trying to rubbish the people of Torbay who had their ears on the ground as they lived here and therefore were far more in the know.

No self importance or grandeur Dave, I DID say "so called" as that was the term used on another site at the time. The aim of the "vote" (there was no vote) of no confidence was to get a newspaper headline(s) that would sharpen the rapidly forming view of Roberts' investors that their front man was being ridiculed and thus a "Lame Duck" for their purposes. I mentioned this morning only because your constant reference to one stance I took (that of the re-development of the Rec would be of benefit to the area..............regardless of who the investor/developer was) and not the full picture. I STILL maintain that much of your objection was originated because it wasn't "local people" which aroused your hackles. But that's by the by now, one day the area will have to address the fact that something substantial and with gravitas needs to be done to arrest the slide into mediocrity and shabbiness that the beauty of the area does not deserve. Facts that other areas have addressed. To be honest, given the present economic situation that day is further away than ever and given the track record of the failure of local investment; it will need to come from outside. I genuinely wish Torbay well with it's conundrum, but let's see that ruddy road built before anything large scale is even thought about..........................and that's forty years overdue now!

Roberts is gone, Bateson is gone. Thats a closed chapter (thank god).
We are back in the league in what appears to be a far better financial footing than before, a squad built on experience and youth, a manager that got us out of the mire of the conference in 2 seasons.
Might I suggest it's now the time to lay to rest what was said and done over 2 years ago and move on?

Merse dear man you go from bad to worse with your assumption's and the reasons I was against the Roberts stadium. I as a local taxpayer welcome anyone who wants to invest in Torbay, do you really believe its just locals who own the hotels and shops here?
Why do you have it in your head that I'm against anyone coming here form the OUTSIDE? I do care about the sort of people who move here thats true, I don't want to see all the DDS claimants just coming here to draw dole money and live by the sea.
You failed back then merse to listen and understand my concerns and it seems you are still doing so.
My concern was only for TUFC and what the move would have done for the club, if you believe having no home and just being able to use the stadium on matchdays was a good thing then I give up.
Only a part of the stadium would have been open for matchdays, no other cash revenue would have been earned at the stadium for the club, not even sales of food etc.
If someone from outside wants to build TUFC a brand new stadium where the club gets extra income form other revenues streams such a stadium could generate, then get them here and soon.
As regards the road, its not the fault of the people of Torbay we do not have the road into the Bay we need so much, as one who has to drive on it every single day, I fully support a new road.
It could be started within the next few years, but I won't hold my breath. mind you the few times I have tried to get anywhere by car in London, I got stuck in far worse jams than you will ever see on the road from Penn Inn to Torquay.

The aim of the "vote" (there was no vote) of no confidence There most certainly was a vote! The "Gang of 4" could not speak for anyone other than themselves, but they could and did call for an open debate and a vote. This was scheduled for Boots and Laces but Chris Roberts had a fit of pique and announced that we were banned from there. We were made very welcome at O'Connors who did a roaring trade as the meeting was well attended. The landlord of Boots was angry with Roberts who had no right to ban us and he was forced - too late to get our custom - to backtrack. That all happily helped to demonstrate publicly that Roberts was an incompetent. There were more questions than answers at the meeting but there was a mood of steely determination from those present. One man abstained from the vote, quite understandably, on the grounds that he had insufficient information to decide. Apart from that, the no confidence vote was unanimous. Both BBC and ITV attended the meeting and both showed fairly long reports - in which supporters came over as reasonable people with real concerns rather than ranting whingers. It certainly raised awareness of the problems at the club. It was one small battle in a big war, but it was an evening that played a part - obviously not a decisive one - in the campaign to remove Roberts. In a way, it was a mixed blessing for the Trust. On the one hand, it did give some people the impression that the Trust was a "revolutionary" faction not for the ordinary supporter. I think that this feeling reduced as the Roberts saga unwound and people understood why what was done was done. On the other hand, it gave the Trust a real kickstart - we started getting lots of people putting their money down before we were really ready to take it, but we had to ride the forward momentum and catch up with the admin as quick as we could rather than knock people back. One sad thing about the great things that have happened recently at the club is that some people who joined TUST in crisis mode have not got round to renewing because they feel the urgency has gone. With the curent Board, it is far easier for TUST to play a real part in "furthering the cause of Torquay United and putting the club at the heart of the community". The Kerswell Alliance run by Ken Pegden is the reason why the road hasn`t been built (Kerswell Alliance are the biggest bunch of Nimbys you could ever possibly want or not want to meet), Merse has a point with some of the population around here cause they just don`t want new things in their back yards, you will find these Nimbys to usually be over a certain age or been brainwashed by said older folk. Most of the hotels and B&Bs in the bay are run by Brummies, quite a few pubs aswell, there is a huge contingent of mid-landers down here so to come up with a way of targeting these people as a group in order to raise gates would be profitable, only problem I can see is these people in my past experience don`t like to be parted with their cash, ask any chamber-maid or waitress! Dave has a point aswell I feel because Merse does appear to slag the people of this area off a bit too much, don`t you mate!

I don't agree that those issues should no longer be debated as it is now two years since they happened. It helps get a bit of historical accuracy on the events of the time dring a crucial period in the Clubs existance. The section devoted to TUFC history shows that many people like reminiscing & comparing recollections of key moments, no one is obliged to contribute if it's not of interest to them.
Jon
Was that because Roberts was not at the meeting to provide the answers to the many questions people wanted to ask him ?
My memory is a little sketchy on the events of the time but I know I was amazed & surprised that Roberts had agreed to attend a meeting with supporters given the obvious bad feeling against him. I even booked a days holiday so that I could attend. But a few days before the meeting was due to take place the Gang of Four decided that a 'vote of no confidence' should take place on the same night...Roberts took exception to this & promptly stated he would no longer be attending.
I was annoyed with the Gang of Four at the time as I thought Roberts can't have been greatly looking forward to the meeting & they gave him an excuse to avoid it. I'd lost my chance to question him face to face & wasted a days holiday.
The Roberts era was interesting and worrying from the first day to the last but if it's to be swept under the carpet & not discussed a very important section of our history will have been declared 'off limits'.
