Well Jim, I have put my head on the block already and stated, he will be here as soon as Rayner has left. If he does come and it is a season long loan, I hope that is what it will mean and we won't find him having to be recalled half way through is loan.
The goal keeping problems last season, were partly to blame for points being lost. Any defense needs to play with a regular keeper behind them, to build up the understand that is required.

It would be FANTASTIC if he were to come back.
I truly believe that had he stayed we would have won the league. Again i always like to back up bold satements such as this with some substance. The Aldershot game was the turning point of the season for me, the game was in the bag until we conceded 2 goals that would not have got past poke. The defence seemed to lose some confidence then and never regained it again all season. The keeper was changed and this had an effect on the back 4. I believe Poke only conceded 1 goal in 6 games??? and anything similar to that for the remainder of the season would have seen us as champions.
As much as i would love to see him back, i just cant see it happening. He has had a taste of championship football, he could well be 2nd in the pecking order at Southampton now, which would mean at least a spot on the bench for them and a few games should their no 1 get injured again. He must fancy his chances of being involved, so why would he come to us?? I hope i am wrong.
I would be very interested to hear where people have heard the rumours?? Do they emanate from the club, Southmpton or is it just wishful thinking??

I was told six weeks ago about three players and he was one of them, one is already here Wayne Carlisle. There was a very strong hint from one of our members, who may just be in the know.
Ask yourself this, Rayner is being linked to another club, he may well be off very soon, has the club said that they are interested in any keeper? Not that I'm aware of myself, as I say it all has to depend on when and if Rayner moves on, watch this space.

I so so so so hope you are right. I hope it doesnt just depend on Raynor going, I thought Raynor might have gone to Crawley.

That's the first half of the equation sorted. Let's hope Poke is in the bag.

That's the first half of the equation sorted. Let's hope Poke is in the bag. Well the headline in todays Herald sure seems to indicate, that now Rayner seems to be gone, that the door is now open for Poke, sure we Will hear the news very soon.

Am I alone in starting to worry just a little about our goal keeper situation. I still firmly believe that Poke was lined up to come in as soon as Rayner had left.
I do wonder if Poke has now had second thoughts, Or maybe his club now feel they would rather keep him as backup. I know there is still plenty of time to sort out a keeper, but we really should have our first choice keeper, now doing his pre season training, with the rest of the squad.
So who could we get? if the Poke deal does not happen, no disrespect to Martin Rice, but he is not up to wearing the NO1 jersey and I think the fans will soon start to moan, if he starts of our season.

It seems from quotes attributed to Paul Buckle in the Herald today that we are only talking to ONE keeper at the moment and although he wont admit it, I think we would all be very surprised if its not Michael Poke!
There is an obvious danger in "putting all your eggs in one basket". There are other clubs in a worse position than us though, as currently I dont believe Rushden & Diamonds have got a keeper on their books. The danger being of course that they are rumoured to be interested in signing Shwan Jalal from Peterborough, who could quite possibly be second on Buckle's list of targets, and if we wait too long for Michael Poke we may miss out on him (and others) too.
I do wonder whether another club has expressed an interest in taking Poke on a season long loan. For example, Yeovil Town dont currently have a keeper on their books and a chance to play League One football for them might prove more attractive. Not saying for one minute that Yeovil are after him - but it is the sort of situation that could happen - the longer we are being kept waiting!

I must admit that i am a little concerned, I thought it would all be done and dusted by now but I am not giving up hope yet...there is still plenty of time for the deal to be done.

crispygull, that was my major concern, that we seemed to be only focused in getting Poke here. I think a move say to Yeovil, might just suit, not only Poke but his club as well. Playing in a higher league could only progress his game further and he would not find the gap to big to jump, if he was recalled.
Buckle must really believe he will get Poke, if as he says he is the only one he is talking too, then he would be foolish not to have a second keeper to go after. I still like all of us,would hope this is sorted really soon, the squad looks good, but we don't need a weak link.

The Poke to Yeovil rumours are gathering momentum, lets hope they are just that....................... rumours.
I must admit i do have my concerns that we are going to be left a bit in Limbo by this. Rice to start as number 1??

I don't think Rice will be No1 to start the season. There are plenty of better keepers available I'm sure, but to the standard of Poke I don't know.
I have seen the rumours of Poke coming this weekend but his loan deal having a recall clause in it. I was of the opinion that in a season loan deal you can't have a recall in it apart from in the January window (like Zebroski)
The choice is do we take the risk of having Poke taken away from us again or take another keeper with less ability but ours to keep?

The choice is do we take the risk of having Poke taken away from us again or take another keeper with less ability but ours to keep? I would opt for the second option as I believe that until the team has a securely cemented understanding with the keeper behind them, there can be no confidence that the season could be a success. Having a keeper leave during the "window" would be catastrophic as far as this is concerned, so no I wouldn't want to see Poke here with a recall clause.

He was third in line for them last year and was needed near the end of the season.Simply can't see them letting him go anywhere, with out a clause built in. I do feel now, that we may not get him anyway and we really should be looking elsewhere.
