I agree with you wholeheartedly on this Dave.............in my book it is absolutely fundamental that the goalkeeper and defence have a "word perfect" understanding and one hundred per cent confidence in one another. Nowhere was this underlined more than the exasperating failure of the management to grasp this very basic of tenets than in the relegation season from League 1 when we were even farting around with the number one position from day one and ended up using six keepers that season! If I was a manager I would be drilling this into them from day one and wouldn't stop until I was satisfied that I also had one hundred per cent confidence in them all. In my opinion, this was the underlying cause of our down fall last season and the root cause of the deterioration of build up play that led to descriptions of "hoof ball". I've often maintained that such play is often not of the manager's wishes but a result of the seeds of doubt taking their place in the minds of various players. To this end, I lay the blame largely with Rayner last season, as early as the fiasco of the 60 yard goal at Burton which was down to his wandering concentration and the repeat of his dodgy focus at home to Cambridge; also compounded by his appalling lack of professionalism over the Yeovil affair all showed itself and no doubt Bucks was fully aware of this only to have the rug pulled from under his feet by the premature recall of Poke. So to reiterate................. no to Poke on a loan deal with a recall clause for me, I would sooner have a second preference keeper all of our own.

What we really need and must have is a first choice keeper, of our own or on a loan with no recall. Rice is a decent lad, but will never install the confidence needed to his defenders and this will cost not only points, but a chance of promotion again.
It seems we will know on Monday if Poke is coming, but as you say we need someone who we know will be here for the season. As it seems Southampton are happy to let him go out on loan, one wonders why Poke seems to be dragging his feet, maybe he has more than one offer to consider.
It would such a shame, if we suffered another season, that was partly ruined, because of goal keeper problems

Suprised this hasn't been mentioned? www.saintsfc.co.uk/news/?page_id=10277Southampton FC have signed Tommy Forecast (great name!) I would hope this is good news for us. I would imagine this puts Poke at 3rd choice and thus more likely to travel west down the A35??

Today was meant to be the day, so is he still thinking it over, or is he now not coming.

So still no news on Poke, Buckle did say he would know on Monday, so whats going on? What do think the reasons are that there has been no news and should we be starting to get a little concerned, that our players are in preseason training, while we do not have a no 1 keeper.

Couldn't agree more. I've been checking every day hoping for some news and it seems to have gone very quiet. On the positive side it would appear that Poke is fourth choice at Southampton. Possible perm move in the pipeline? Still would be nice to know.

Come on Mr Poke.
What are you thinking about?
Do you want to
a) stay at a big club who don't rate you and where you are 4th choice?
Or
b) come to a fantastic little club who rate you and where you would be first choice?
You're not going to become a better keeper playing the odd game in the stiffs!!

Well it does now seem that Buckle thinks he will be here and ready to play against Tiverton on Saturday, so lets hope so. Surly the chance to be the number one and a fans favorite, would be all a young keeper would want and need, while he is still learning his trade

While it was good to read Paul Buckles thoughts on the Torquay United Site, I do feel he should have given the fans an update on the Poke situation.
Its clear he feels he has learned much from last season and that he believes the squad is so much stronger, but then I think we would all agree that it is.
Its not like its some big secret, that we want Poke here, yes there must be interest from other clubs, but when you go and state, that the club will have an answer on Monday, then give out no news, its no wonder fans get a little bit upset..
I said before that I believed the Poke deal was done and it just needed Rayner to be moved on first, so if that was the case, what really has happened to stop that happening. If it was not sorted before, then why have we let our no 1 keeper go, if nothing was ever in place, to get Poke in. If it was just down to hope, then I really have to question such decisions.
I'm not saying that if we had to start the season with Rice, that he would not give is all, but I simply feel he is not really good enough to start the season. Games lost, mean you have to start playing catch up, when you could in fact be pulling away.
Lets hope its just a stumbling block that Buckle will over come and soon, I for one am just a little worried.

I have always been known as one who gets information that is correct. My last major coup was the sacking at the club.
Well let me just say that the news you may hear soon, will be even better than you could have wished for and if it turns out not to happen, news that will still please you all will follow very soon afterwords.

Poor bloke, if he signs and i sure hope he does, the pressure on him will be immense. He has a lot to live up to. Lets hope that when he makes his first mistake no one gets on his back.
Just to increase the pressure, i believe he is the final piece of the jigsaw that leads to promotion.

Just to increase the pressure, i believe he is the final piece of the jigsaw that leads to promotion. I think he would cope with the pressure, but we know there will be those who would jump on his back, after the first mistake he made. I have been a bit puzzled about why a loan signing would take so long to sort out. If our club wants him, he wants to come and Southampton are willing to let him go out on loan, what is the problem? It could be down to who pays what part of his wages etc, or what recall clauses, need to be in place. I think there could be much more to this and maybe the real delay is sorting out a transfer instead of a loan. We will have to wait and see, when the club sorts it out and releases a statement. I really hope that was the case, far better to have Poke as our player, rather than a loan. Then maybe I'm way of the mark and he just could be torn, between coming here on a loan, or another club.
