Merse humour is always welcome and badly needed at times, Insults are not, lets not make a big deal of this.
Thanks Dave

For a football forum this gets quite nasty. Buckle out is quite harsh but then I do feel he's not the man for this division, he's young and could be a great boss. The game was just thrown away again. Hargreaves has gone ( sadly ) so lets get behind the team thats still here not the team thats left !!

I'm not name dropping merse. He was sat in the directors box I wasn't inferring that Brian, I was alluding to his lack of height. You might have thought he was sat down are you sure? Are you saying he was assessing thre referee's performance from behind the goal? So he had an excellent view of goings on at the other end then This game just gets more ludicrous by the day!

I think that was a very unfair comment reference Benyon who ran himself ragged with a brilliant peformance all afternoon. He nearly scored when he checked inside a defender and hit a shot which was going in until their keeper fingertipped it wide. Also set Rendell up brilliantly. No doubt Benyon was knackered by the end - of course we have no striker options on the bench so if he had no energy to retain the ball at the end - well really no fault can be put in his direction. He should most definately been man of the match. Dave - your summary was spot on and I would agree with all of it. O'Kane impressed me today, but as I have said before I think Buckle has to play Zebs on the wing because his defensive side of the game is so much better than say O'Kane or Stevens and having them both on at the start would leave us too open. The team spirit was a vast improvement on last week. I got out the ground very quickly so did not really here any comments made but it was very frustrating to lose again.

There you go Merse having a pop at Benyon again and you weren't even at the game . I'm not commenting on the game , as you quoted me verbatum you can see I was commenting on the selection and my feelings about it before the first whistle. Benyon might well have played well in your opinion, but who failed to retain possession that lead to the corner for their first, and who lost possession (as well as missed a few chances to seal the win) for the second? Benyon and Stevens. As ever, and true to past history I'm afraid. I watched close up on Tuesday as Rendell and Thomson struggled to work with Benyon's totally unorthodox and quite frankly; thoughtless running off the ball in the first half and to be perfectly honest a decent half intelligent "near post" striker would have thrived on Thomson's ability to put the ball into the position of maximum opportunity from where a glancing header or deftly touched shot would produce an attempt on goal. In my opinion Benyon is the product of poor coaching early in his development and is incapable of making good decisions whilst Stevens will always struggle to impose himself and put to good use his excellent technique unless he acquires an upper body strength he simply doesn't have right now. Look at Smith, look at Cox; they have it. It has nothing to do with being short, it is to be with not having the physique. So there we have it, I said I had no confidence in gaining a result with these two starting. They started and we failed to get a result. Merse, the fact is you weren't there today and in my opinion Benyon was excellent today, .. given the role he was asked to perform by the Manager today. He was played as a "target man" and gave their (much bigger than him) centre half (Rehmann) all sorts of problems with his movement and his ability to turn his man. He played an excellent through ball to Rendell (who also played very well in a deeper role) early in the second half but unfortunately Rendell dragged his shot wide when he really should have scored ... but that is the story of how things are going for us at the moment sadly. Of course you are free to blame whoever you want for this afternoon's result .. but I would suggest that it would be hugely unfair to blame young Elliott as not only did he work his socks off but he also caused them a lot of problems. Edit ... sorry I didn't realise that Frobisher had posted much the same above!

Have to agree with the praise for Benyon. both him and Rendell were superb today and worked together really well.
O'Kane too looked promising for the time he was on, the pull back for Stevens showed he has a quick brain to go with his quick feet also.
Stevens though was dreadful and I'm afraid to say Mansell wasn't a lot better. He's just too indisciplined at times and leaves us totally exposed.

I though referee East got most things right today ( rendell incident excluded) and Paul Durkin agreed. Am I in a minority? You maybe but I am not included. One of the best referees in the league and I thought he got most things right. Nobody gets everything right!!

I’m not a violent person or one that often loses his temper, but if Aussie and I could have got to one so called fan after the game we would have knocked his block off, the abuse he gave to our players and more importantly Paul Buckle had me seeing red and I tell you what I felt for Paul Buckle today. I'm not violent by inclination either, Dave, but these individuals - and their thick, imbred brethren on the Pop side - make me so angry as well. They're a fact of life at every football club, and one encounters their sort in all walks of life whenever the chips are down, but they seem to be more prevalent at Plainmoor than elsewhere. It's a terrible shame that today's game ended like it did. As jmgull pointed out, today was a weakened team, and one can't help sensing that the presence of Carlisle and Thomson in the squad would have made the difference between throwing away all three points today and not. Jmgull is also spot on about Hargreaves and those who felt the need to join in with their peurile chant. FFS, the man struggles (by his own admission) to play two games a week, so who are these people supposing plays whilst he is applying ice packs to his 38 year old body? But I guess it's easier to sing stupid chants than to answer questions like that. One point from Burton, Barnet and Bradford is a dismal return. If any positive is to be taken from this, it's that Grimsby have only gained a point during this period. The game's are coming thick and fast however, and with them making what appear to be decent acquisitions, it can only be a matter of time before they start to close the gap. With eight minutes so go, we were 9 points clear of Grimsby and would have given ourselves some decent breathing space. As it is, the next run of games have taken on critical importance. My only hope is that Branston supplies the leadership needed at the back, Carlisle returns sooner rather than later, and Buckle manages to keep his young side motivated. One thing is certain, heckles and ignorant chants will do absolutely nothing to help the latter...whether the source of them has paid his or her £15 or not.

Merse, the fact is you weren't there today and in my opinion Benyon was excellent today, .. given the role he was asked to perform by the Manager today. Of course you are free to blame whoever you want for this afternoon's result .. but I would suggest that it would be hugely unfair to blame young Elliott I haven't "blamed Young Elliott" for us losing, I have made a point about my feelings whenever both he and Stevens start together. Another point I'll make is that he has failed to score in either of the last two games and in both of those games he was put in the same position advanced of Rendell. Now whether he is in that position to be in a better position from which to score, or to make space for Rendell I am not party to. If the manager believes he can offer a better option in that position than Zebroski that his his perogative, but if it's incorporated, again in my opinion; it sacrifices the best potential we have to be a scoring entity; he must be severely lacking in the reliability of certain other players to do the flank playing job satisfactorily. I read a lot about the "unreliability" of Thomson to do his bit defensively before the Barnet game, but on the night he certainly did OK in my opinion. Others may have been impressed with Elliott's performance on Tuesday, but in my opinion both Rendell and Thomson struggled to "read" him or maybe he struggled to "read" Thomson so much so that a host of balls perfectly played in to a player in that advanced position went to waste. It's the same with Thompson, frequently moaned about and a target for the "Boo Boys" amongst the fans, but up at Barnet he did the "ratting" job of Hargreaves just as well as the "Old Man" himself and with a lot more mobility....................are people expecting him to be another "Wroe"? because if they are, we just aren't going to play with two creative men at the expense of a ball winner. I'll tell you something else for nothing................if I was a manager and half my squad were of the same negative, divisive and petulant nature of some of the posters on here and some of the "fans" amongst the Yellow Army; I would have them out on their arses forthwith. I'm not an apologist for the manager, nor am I defending the appalling return of one point from fifteen....................it's pathetic and if it carries on much longer his position as manager will be untenable as manager's jobs always are in those circumstances. But by all accounts performances at Bournemouth, Chesterfield and Barnet and at home today have been quite acceptable with the two key failures to kill off games and ensure those performances nett the rewards they deserve being down to players out on the pitch and to my way of seeing it the acquisition of Branston is a clear sign of his dissatisfaction in that direction as well of course in his efforts to get a reliable goalscorer in. But please, don't use Sills, Hargreaves, and Nicholson as sticks with which to beat the manager. In this age of high speed, athletic football no side can carry a "passenger" who struggles to match the pace of the game....................and (heroes that they have been) these three all fall into that category as anyone making a sensible and emotionless observation can see.

For what it's worth, I couldn't help thinking that the game was lost for us in midfield today.
Of course the fact that we missed several gilt edged chances was the major factor in our not winning the game but the problems run deeper than that in my opinion.
We finished the game today with a midfield of O'Kane, Thompson, Wroe and Stevens.
All, on their day, wonderful to watch, easy on the eye, technically gifted. I have to say, I really think young O'Kane could have a massive future in the game, he looks like such a good footballer in the true sense of the word but not a single one of that foursome could "tackle" to save their lives! Of course Wroe and Thompson will "nick" the odd ball off someones toes ... but when do you ever see them come out on top in a full blooded tackle?
As for Stevens and O'Kane, like I say, lovely to watch their work on the ball ... but through no fault of their own, they just get outmuscled far too often. Their "games" are probably suited to a higher level than ours ... unfortunately at the bottom of League 2, brute strength rules!

Merse I was not at the Barnet game so don't know the thinking behind Benyon playing more advanced than Rendell. I do know because I paid a great deal of attention today to everything Bucks was saying to the players, that as Bucks knew the Bradford defenders were very slow, he wanted balls played in behind them or into the channels and Benyon had the most pace out of the two of them to get on the end of such balls.
It worked and the views around me were simply that Bucks had worked out the weakness in the Bradford team, no Benyon did not score, but then he created enough chances for others to do so and goal scorers have to be providers as well remember.

He nearly scored when he checked inside a defender and hit a shot which was going in until their keeper fingertipped it wide. ....brilliant - you're having a laugh aren't you? Benyon was a whole lot better than his toothless displays of the last couple of months for sure.......but to say he was brilliant when he had just the one effort on goal (as you described above) all afternoon. I like Elliott's gameness and as he's our young player, i would love to see him do the business for us and be the goalscorer we need.......its so frustrating watching him, as if your honest you know in your heart that the lack of pace will stop him progressing in the game.......its the reason that Bristol City got rid of him in the first place despite scoring plenty in their reserves. That chance summed him up........Rendell floated it over to the last defenders head and Benyon had first run on him, instead of going in on the keeper 1 on 1 with a burst of pace, he stopped allowing the defender to hold him up......he then quite cleverly, wrong footed the defender by checking back inside and instead of then going in on goal he chose to shoot from 20 odd yards making the chance much harder.....2 or 3 other times he was flicked through and he couldn't shake off those two rather lumbering centre halves. If we seriously can't do better than Elliott up top then relegation is a much more possible outcome to this bloody frustrating season.
