Reading the HE on-line It seems Bevan's loan runs out the end of this week, sure someone said it ran out last week, so I'm sure that means he will play in goal against Oxford. Also interesting to read that Poke will have to sit on the bench and wait his turn, does this mean we will see Bevan here for even longer?
A game we need to win, to get into the draw for the 3rd round, then we could get lucky and draw a big team and what a pay day that would be for the club.
I think its time to start Sills and Benyon up front from the start on Saturday, Benyon has proved he knows where the goal is and he has the pace and skill to work off Sills.Danny also need to start, he has earned that because of his goals in the last two games, he can be changed if he is not having much impact on the game.
I see no reason why we should not win this game, I know Oxford will do their best to get into the next round, but our run and the fact we are scoring more goals now, will I believe get us the result.

I'm not sure about Bevan, maybe someone could clear it up for us. I certainly hope he is still with us come Saturday. I understand Ricey is doing well at Truro but I think we'd all sooner have Poke or Bevan in nets.
It should be a very good game this weekend. Oxford will want a half-decent Cup run to brighten up their ever-stuttering season and both teams will want to join the Premier League teams in the 3rd Round draw.
Can anyone confirm the dates for the 3rd Round should we get there? Will it be the weekend of January 3rd, when we're due to play Burton in the league?

According to the FA site, third round is indeed on the 3rd January!
I think it will be a tough match if Oxford play anything like the second half at Plainmoor last month! Particularly as the league isn't their main focus at present. We do have an advantage in that they are playing tomorrow night though!
As it is a cup match, it is one we should aim to win ( obvious I know but it will be tough at the Kassam and there is the small matter of fixture congestion inthe event of a replay ) and I agree that Benyon should start in a 4-4-2 formation. With good away support, hopefully it will be a big crowd and a cracking match.
In respect of Danny, he was substituted early in the second half against Oxford and I wouldn't be surprised to see him on the bench if either Carlisle or Dsane are fit.

I think we should approach this game in positive frame of mind with a 4-4-2 formation.
Oxford have really had problems in front of goal in both league and cup away from home - P10; W1; D2; L7; F7; A19; GD -12
This mirrors our home form:
P10; W6; D2; L2; F17; A8; GD+9
I'd bring back Matt Green alongside Sillsy - they'll be worried more by his pace than the tenacity of Thompson or the potential (still unproven in my mind) of Benyon.
I'd be tempted to bring back Ellis to counter Constable, too
Either way, we should carry on aiming to win rather than worrying unecessarilly about the opponents - let them worry about us.
They rarely score more than 1 goal; but we often do nowadays!

ealinggull I can't really see Green being given a start in this match, I do agree about the need to go an attack the game and I'm sure Bucks would go with Benyon.
Ellis I felt was unlucky to be dropped after his last start and I would much prefer to see him play in defense than Hodges.
With all the games we have coming up, we need to start using more of the squad we have, it has always been everyones view, that this season we have a much stronger squad in depth, so now is time to put it to the test.

Agree with Benyon, Dave.
Would like to see Brough and Green used some time though. Not for the Oxford game but what's the point having them on the books and training if we are not going to use them soon?

I would like to see Benyon play tomorrow. He has bided his time after injury and looks sharper than Green who is still paying for his naivety at Rushden.
I also hope Ellis is reinstated (would prefer Robbo but this is to soon) in place of Hodges. I cringe at the thought of Odebeye's pace up against Hodges.
I'm very much looking forward to this game. I can't remember the last time we played Oxford on a Saturday and this will have the feel of the old league encounters with a big build up and good away following.
Come on the Gulls. (I dont do score predictions until the game as started)

I'd like to see Benyon play as well, Pikey. However, I'm not sure that dropping TT from his position of "deeper foward" and changing the formation after such a great run is likely.
Green hasn't impressed me much. His goal at the end of the FGR match was brilliant, but other than that, he hasn't nearly justified the hype that came with him and I don't think that he is a patch on Benyon. There's plenty of time for him to come good though and against his old club that openly questioned his ability to play regularly he might raise his game, even if he failed to last time.
I would start with Ellis, but still think that it will be Hodges that will start. Each player has their own attributes - personally I like the aggressive performances of Ellis over Hodges, but if it goes Hodges' way I cant argue with a manager who has sustained such a long unbeaten run!
Whilst it won't have the crowd of 6,400ish of the reply against Oxford in 1983, I expect to see a 3,000+ crowd.
The importance of this game is huge. Make no mistakes - a victory tomorrow is absolutely vital for our chance of being in with a shout at the end of the season. The funding that the £30k "tie winner" fee woulld bring is just the start - you'd expect to make another good few grand in round 3.
I honestly feel that losing tomorrow would be more damaging than failing to win any of the next 5 league games given that crowds have not come flocking-back and surely the consortium are feeling the financial pressure in their professions.....

Completely agree. This is an opportunity for the club to win back some of the stay away fans. A high profile game against good opposition in the FA Cup. All the ingredients needed to fire the imagination. I'm really envious of those guys able to be there. Having said that i'm a bit nervous about the outcome. Oxford have a habit of spoiling our party. So a thoroughly professional job required by the boys, there is a lot at stake today. A good result and subsequent payday can cement our promotion push. A defeat could knock the wheels off our recent form.
Going for a solid 2-0 win. Nothing fancy, just job done.

If there is a 3000 crowd then it wil be the biggest of the season! Oxford fans seem to think they will bring around 450? (600 if not for the Histon result  ) Will need to up our recent home crowds from around 2200 to achieve that. Here's hoping that the magic of ther cup and the first home Saturday game for a few weeks will make for a good crowd and a cracking atmosphere. |

An FA Cup 2nd Round game between Torquay an Oxford, would in the past have seen a gate of over 5000, despite the history of our the two clubs, todays game is an FA Cup game between two non league teams. If I had been asked to guess at the number of Oxford fans who would be at the match, I would have said 1000, but it seems it may be no more than half that number. The weather is dull but dry and a nip in the air,so the weather itself should not be a reason to put of any fans going today. You will find some fans, who will be roped into Christmas shopping by their wifes today and so will miss todays game. Those that have to go shopping will find they will most likely be going to Exeter or Plymouth, due to the every increasing lose of decent shops in the bay. That and also the high car park charges, new on street parking meters and the dreaded NCP, who have a zero tolerance approach, even at Xmas, well done NCP  I still believe we will see a gate of just over 3000 and I still see us winning the game. |
