Injury has to be far and away the most prevalent reason. Although there have always been, and continue to be other reasons, notably religion, why 24 year old's give up the game. Most famously has to be Cyril's brother, Peter Knowles. Born in late September 1945, and packing up the game after the eighth game of the 1969/70 season, he'd have been round and about his 24th Birthday when deciding to give up football and instead devote his time to religion.
It still happens, Sheffield Wednesday losing a 24 year old member of their first team squad earlier this season, as religion kicked football into touch.
"When he talked with me I understood and I just said to him to take some time to be sure about the decision.
In that period he was very professional - he's a nice guy - but I must tell you that his head isn't in football.
Just the body was here and he tried to do his best, because he's a good guy and a fantastic professional. We must accept his decision".
