WHAT MAKES A GREAT CAPTAIN ? NO IKEA !!
Let's just suppose that somewhere there's a young Captain, possibly about to serve a suspension, and badly in need of guidance. Such a player should surely take every opportunity to 'learn from the legends'. When weighing up his options as to how to spend his enforced non-playing time, instead of deciding between lying on the sofa watching TV or going back to an old club to do the half time draw, he needs to ask himself: 'What would Manse do ?'
A young player won't go far wrong if he learns from the greats and attempts to emulate their legendary example. Now we can all look at the league table and say 'Aye aye, what's going on at Rovers ?, slipping down to third in the table' ? The obvious answer is that Cap'n Manse has had to endure a 2 match suspension, and Rovers, naturally, are a lesser team without his guiding presence. But it's in the magnificent leadership and commitment that the Cap'n still devotes to the cause, that the young player can learn the most valuable lessons from:
Mansell is serving a two-game suspension for collecting ten bookings since the start of the season and will again be forced to observe when Rovers continue their bid to land the Vanarama Conference title at Macclesfield. "I'll be going up to Macclesfield with them on Saturday as well," Mansell said. "The wife's not too happy about that, but I'm buzzing, I think she wanted me to go to IKEA !"

Let's also reflect on the continuing social engineering by the Left as they relentlessly work towards making football a game fit for women. As Chris Hargreaves rightly pointed out yesterday, a few years ago the Ref would have waved a finger at Luke Young and his opponent and waved play on, but now it's an excuse to start waving cards of every colour. With our powder puff wide men (who remembers seeing Cameron or Chapell put in a tackle) or having ultra light weight McQuilkin alongside him in midfield, Luke Young makes 85% of the team's tackles in an area covering almost two thirds of the pitch (according to my scientific research). The number of challenges he now has to make while compensating for teammates who avoid the physical side of the game, and as part of a team that rarely has the majority of possession, dwarfs what he had to do at Argyle when the workload was far more evenly shared throughout the side.
The great Cap'n himself observed: "I have never got to ten bookings in a season before, so it is another first for me. It is all part and parcel of being a midfielder because you are in the area of the pitch where most of the action unfolds and you're always trying to win the ball".
Couple this with officialdom seemingly doing everything they can to remove the last remaining vestiges of physical contact from the game, by flashing a card at anyone attempting an old fashioned meaty tackle, and even a midfield artist like Cap'n Manse who has the delicacy of touch of a Hoddle, ridiculously finds himself issued with 10 yellow cards.

Couldn't even be arsed to do our half time draw, though. The turncoat. At least Nico still has us in his thoughts. He cared, he did. |

I think this satirical thread has kept my sanity intact this year! Do hope that Capn Manse just falls short of promotion though as Rovers makes a decent day out!

But somebody has to take a stand. Yes, I know there's much to be said for denying the "oxygen of publicity" to certain views. However, one day I must set off in the direction of the Tamar Valley in an effort to find Alpine Joe's Cave. Hopefully, when I get there, I'll find nothing more than an amiable old parodist. That would surely be the case, wouldn't it? |

EASTER REUNION
An Easter that will be hugely significant for Cap'n Manse's hopes of automatic promotion. A home game against Chester on Good Friday, followed by a vital away clash against his old mate, and fellow legend Nico, on Easter Monday.
Nico's Kidderminster side aren't in the best of form, and there will surely be no sentiment shown by Cap'n Manse as he orders his troops to hit Harriers with everything they've got. An Easter bombardment aimed at breaking down the Kidderminster defence will be a necessity. It's looking like a three way fight for that one automatic promotion place, with Rovers, Barnet, and Grimsby all in contention.
Two of our all time Legends, whose careers have risen again since setting off for pastures new, after being cast as the whipping boys for everything that was wrong with the Torquay side last season.
Cap'n Manse has issued a battle cry calling for a show of overwhelming force at Aggborough. The Rovers fans realise that this is not only a vital game for their promotion prospects, but also a wonderful chance to show their appreciation of both the Cap'n and greatly respected Nico. No wonder it's a sell-out !
Bristol Rovers are proud to announce that we have sold our whole allocation for the fixture with Kidderminster Harriers on Easter Monday.
The club were allocated 2,604 tickets for the fixture at Aggborough Stadium and all of them have sold.

I thought everybody was keenly following the exploits of our two former heroes who have clearly taken on a new lease of life after leaving Plainmoor for pastures new. I understand there is even considerable interest over in the USA!  |

The trouble is AJ is still a top poster, it's just his choice of topic about one deserter in this particular thread that irks me; a deserter who obviously could've done a job for us this season but chose not to stay. I appreciate that Nico had no choice but to find another club so he is entitled to be viewed as a legend, but the other one......

MANSE'S EASTER IS EGGSCELLENT !
Rovers drab 0-0 at Macclesfield had seen their promotion push falter, but that was the final game of Cap'n Manse's two game suspension. The side was transformed by the reintroduction of the mighty Cap'n for the two Easter fixtures which yielded maximum points, with goals scored totalling eight, and only one conceded.
Let's firstly take a look at The Cap'n's 'Man Of The Match' performance in the 5-1 thrashing of Chester on Good Friday. The old saying: 'You don't know what you've got until it's gone' probably isn't true of Paul Sturrock, as he only stayed a couple of days we never had chance to find out what we'd got. However, The Bristol Post, under the heading 'Lee Mansell Inspires Rovers To Victory' stated:
'Mansell, meanwhile, much like Lee Brown earlier this season, reinforced the old adage that suggests you don't know what you've got till it's gone by returning from an enforced two-game absence to get the team's heart beating again.
He was deservedly awarded with the man-of-the-match gong for his efforts'.
The Post went on to report that Cap'n Manse deserves the credit for Rovers second goal, as his thunderbolt shot could only be deflected into the net.
'A palpable sense of relief then enveloped the Memorial Stadium when man-of-the-match Lee Mansell doubled the advantage some ten minutes later with a powerful shot from distance that took a wicked deflection to wrong-foot Chester goalkeeper Jon Worsnop'.

With that resounding win under their belt, it was then time to visit fellow legend Nico at Aggborough for the Easter Monday game. Now, regular Legends readers will be able to cast their mind back to January, and Rovers away game at Woking (page 15 of the thread for those who need reminding). Despite that game not being all ticket, and the attendance being substantially under capacity, the authorities at Woking decided to lock several hundred Rovers fans out under the pretext of 'segregation difficulties'. The Easter Monday fiasco at Kidderminster saw the powers that be adopt the exact opposite strategy. Having already given Rovers a very generous allocation of over 2,600 tickets, the call went out for Rovers fans who weren't in possession of a ticket not to travel, but some little sods still did. As kick off neared, Plod insisted that Kiddie should turf their own season ticket holders out of their seats and let the Rovers fans that had travelled without tickets sit in them instead ! Talk about alienating your own fans. Supporters who were probably angry enough already having learned that Nico would be watching the game from the subs bench rather than bringing his invaluable experience to the defence.

Unsurprisingly, without Kev in the defence, Kidderminster were crushed 3-0 by Manse's rampant Rovers. There's still just the single point separating Barnet and Rovers at the top. The talking point among Pirates fans on the way home was : 'Why is Cap'n Manse even more brilliant that usual ??'
The Cap'n explained his magnificent form, and how he'd been able to return with a couple of match winning performances to The Bristol Post, stating that the enforced rest caused by his suspension had done him good:
“It has probably been a benefit to me when I think about it in hindsight,” Mansell said. “It was only a fortnight but it was the first bit of time I have had off during a season in about three years.
"I hate missing any games but I have played a lot of football this season and a rest didn’t do me any harm. The only way I was going to get it was through a suspension because I always want to play when I am fit and available.
“I have to say the gaffer was great in that he let me stay away from the training ground for a few days to spend a bit of time with my family.
“I have a newborn baby and it was a good chance for me to give my wife a little break. I also felt really fresh and raring to go before going into the two games we played over Easter".

I think Kiddies' resolution of the fans-without-tickets problem should be applauded. I accept that the season ticket holders who had to move may have been a bit aggrieved to lose their familiar seat but they weren't turfed out and I am sure the club can generate a bit of goodwill with those fans by giving them a free programme/pie/cuppa at the next home game.
My only question is did the Rovers' fans get in for free or were they sold a ticket at matchday prices? If they were let in for free, that would set a bit of an unwanted precedence for future away fans travelling without tickets. Other than that, Kiddies defused a situation that could easily have escalated, even though the fans who travelled were at fault.
You will never stop ticketless fans travelling so if it is possible to accommodate them because there are empty seats, then I believe clubs should be compelled to act in a similar way. Of course if Kiddie had given Rovers a bigger allocation, the situation may not have arisen, as there was obvioulsy unused capacity, that just needed a bit of sensible management.

SEVENSATIONAL CAP'N MANSE !
Cap'n Manse whipped The Memorial Stadium into a fist pumping frenzy of goal celebrations as Rovers hit a magnificent seven into the net of their hapless opponents Alfreton. And Rovers very own 'Magnificent 7' - Cap'n Manse himself, was naturally among the scorers, as he notched goal number five of the match with a world class header. Over 11,000 turned up to cheer on The Cap'n and his teammates, but although Rovers rewarded their fans with this incredible win, it was still Barnet who claim the one automatic promotion place.
But still, I'm sure all TusTFF members will be wishing Manse the very best of luck in the play off games, which start this Wednesday with a first leg away tie at Forest Green. No official word as yet as to whether TUFC would be running coaches to Wembley to cater for Gulls fans who would want to show their love and support for their greatly respected former Captain, and cheer him on to play-off final glory, but let's get the Forest Green semi's over with first.
So a couple more rolls of the dice before we know whether the great Cap'n is taking his rightful place back in the Football League. Unsurprisingly, Manse has been quick to rally his men, and remind them of his proud history as a Wembley Winner !
"I wouldn't say the boys are down, it's a feeling of regret more than anything else, but we will be back in again on Monday and the banter will be going again. We have a great spirit in the changing room and we will be ready to do what we need to do without a shadow of a doubt."
Rovers are tasked with overcoming a Forest Green Rovers side that was one of only three sides they failed to beat either home or away all season, and Mansell, who was a Conference play-off winner at Wembley with Torquay United in 2009, said: "It will be a difficult test.
"Bad teams don't finish in the top five, but if we are on our game we give ourselves a great chance and we'd fancy ourselves.
"I've been very fortunate to have been able to win promotion through the play-offs and there is no better feeling. That is a long way off yet because we still have to be at our best over 180 minutes of football to get there before we even start thinking about that."
"It was a great performance from the boys and that will give us the sort of confidence that can go a long way in the play-offs. They will be pressure games for all four of the teams, but we have the experience of having to be mentally tough all year.
"The gaffer has reminded us about that side of things throughout the season because he doesn't want us to be one of those Bristol Rovers sides of recent years that have crumbled when the pressure has been on.
"We feel like we are a different beast and when you have a lot of fantastic characters in the dressing room you will always have a chance of being successful in what you are trying to achieve."

Kidderminster Harriers announce that Kevin Nicholson will not be with them next season:
“With Kevin, as the fans know, he lives in Torquay and took on a lot of travelling to play for Harriers, and the club has been in a position to try and help him as much as we can with that.
“Obviously we had been challenging for the play-offs before Christmas but those circumstances have now changed.
“We appreciate Kevin’s efforts for the club this season but at this stage of his career it is best for him to find a club which better suits him and his family.”

MANSE IS ON HIS WAY TO WEMBLEY !!
SEMI-FINAL PICTURE SPECIAL
So it's another Wembley appearance for Cap'n Manse to add to his already glittering career. And it goes without saying that all Gulls fans, and especially TusTFF members, will be wishing him every success in the upcoming final against Grimsby.
Rovers defeated Forest Green both home and away, and over 10,500 supporters turned up yesterday to cheer the triumphant Cap'n and his players, who are now just one victory away from a well deserved return to the Football League.
After making a right hash of attempting to keeping Rovers up last season, 'Manager' Darrell Clarke knows he's likely to crumble under the pressure of a big match, and so, wisely on this occasion left things to Cap'n Manse to steer the team to Wembley.
Lucky London based Gulls fans will be able to go along to support The Cap'n at Wembley in person, but we'll all be cheering for him on the big day wherever we are.
