According to todays Sunday Independent, Exeter are the only club in the South west to buck the trend in falling crowds.
Plymouth offered last weeks Ipswich game at half-price for those that bought tickets for the previous game against Preston. Lowest gate of then season 9203 compared to an average gate for last season of 13000.
Bristol Rovers in October offered a buy 2 tickets and get into three games. This was taken upm by 500 or so fans.
Yeovil whilst not dropping their prices have a scheme for local schools and have also given reduced rates to family groups. Yeovil not keen to drop prices as not to undermine those that have purchased season tickets.
Torquay whilst not mentioning any plans for lowering the prices have put the low gates down to a combination of early poor form and mid-week games (cup?) that are sometimes hard to get to.

Phil, I think we can understand why Exeter has bucked the trend, they are back In the league, so I'm sure that would have brought back some Of their stay aways. Plus as has been posted some where else On the board, concerning away fans, they must be getting many more than last season.
Maybe our board heard old uncle Mike, pratt on too much about, making the point that offering special Offers etc, only lost more money and no gains were made.
I still believe we need to get those family's In, the ones who don't come, because the cost for them all to come Is to great. Do a deal for them and get the extra £30+ It has to be better than getting nothing at all.

Exeter's approach for "kid for a quid" in conjunction with the Express and Echo has been going for a while. The success of this seems to be reaping the rewards - they have steadily been growing and it has been clear that since their very lucky escape from total liquidation (by a single cup tie!) that they have been progressing as a club. This has allowed their fortunes to improve on the pitch. Instead of being a club that brought the players in by dangling financial carrots in front of them, they have had young progressive managers that have been able to inch towards promotion - and it was really only a matter of time before they got it. I think that our club is very much emulating some of their approaches - indeed, I know that Paul Morrish (an Exeter Director) was a guest of our board the other week and it was interesting to hear his enthusiasm as to how his club has progressed. I'm sure that our Directors will be looking at the steps that they have taken to progress off the pitch in a similar manner to them.

otobe, I think that such an approach should be started at our club, sooner rather than later,we all know the kids Of today, could well be the die hards Of tomorrow and Its not just about getting fans In for one season, but taking a much longer view.
Yes the Man U game really saved that club and just think, what we could do If we could progress this year and draw such a game for ourselves. There has been so much to do at the club, to put the Bateson and Robert days behind, everything takes time and we know the board has to walk before It can run.
Even with our lower gates, we have much to look forward too and will never be short of hope that our club Is only going one way and that Is up.

I read the same piece in todays Independent that Chelstongull refers to.
I couldn't help but recall Merse's comments on the fact that the Club statement regarding the withdrawal of sponsorship for the youth team had no signatory.
It seems the Clubs policy of saying very little, but when a tiny trickle of information does seep out making sure you don't know who it's from is alive & well & extends to comments about attendance figures.
Against the quotes re attendances from each club we have Paul Sturrock (Manager) & Michael Dunsford (Chief Exec) named for Argyle. The Bristol Rovers quotes are provided by Kirsty Pugh (Press & Public Relations Officer). Then at Exeter City they were talking to Andy Gillard (Operations Manager), the comments from Ashton Gate are attributed to Steve Lansdown (Chairman)........before we move on to Torquay Utd & speak to...'spokesperson'.
There's more chance of Merse voting for Steve Woods as his player of the season than there is of finding out just who is providing the snippets of information that escape from Stalag Plainmoor

So why Is It like this then Joe? I mean this was just an article, no big commercially sensitive information being given out, yet It Is still from only a spokesperson.Maybe we really don't have all these people at the club, maybe It Is still Roberts and once again he has people fooled.
I think I have given up any hope that the board will ever talk to the fans, give out some information, that stops fans drawing the wrong conclusions, but maybe one day they may just have too.

I would hardly think underlining the achievements of a manager who's team goes eleven games unbeaten whilst winning nine of them amounts to being a sheep. You and your rapidly diminishing little gaggle of chipped shouldered critics are penned in by your ridiculous bitterness that seems to prevent you enjoying such a marvelous run. One would have thought with all the protracted disappointment we have had to put up with over the years such a sad little bunch of gurning flat caps chuntering away in the corner of the pub would grab the opportunity of actually smiling at our current good time. You sit there on the other side of the world begrudging a young manager even a minimum of credit and choose instead to constantly criticise the short period of bedding in that his squad obviously needed at the start of the season. That wasn't management "ineptitude" as you so arrogantly call it (have you ever coached/managed/trained any sort of team?) it was just part and parcel of being manager at any club or any team at any sport. So despite the bleedin' obvious that this is indeed a very good squad, producing a very good product and outstanding results; you choose to wallow in your own misery you sad, sad little man. Bye the way, it's news to me that I am a "London Cabbie", but there we are you do like to put your own slant on things. ABSOLUTELY agree, with everything. Especially the bit about begruding the manager even a minimum amount of credit. I still get the feeling there are people out there still hoping for a run of bad results, to get back on the Buckle isn't good enough soap box. What does he have to do to convince the doubters he has what it takes to get us promoted?? In fact i cant believe there are still doubts?? I have seen all bar one of these last 11 games and we have played some outstanding football, dominated just about every one of games and rarely looked liked losing. We are also in a very good position and looking stronger each game.

tufc01, you ask what he has to do to convince the doubters he has what it takes to get us promoted? Er..........get us promoted obviously. He bottled it last season, we need to make sure he doesn't do it again. If he blows it again this season he may well condemn our club to years in this pub league. I would rather not take the risk of this happening. He's not proven anything yet apart from getting it wrong when it matters.
This is a huge season, make or break for TUFC. We are trusting Buckle to succeed where he failed last season. Let's hope he learned from his mistakes.

As long as the "spokesman" or website message is released on an official basis on behalf of the club, what difference does it make who exactly said it? With reference to the message about the youth sponsor...........the message appeared on the official website and stayed there, unedited for weeks - can anyone explain why we need to have a particular signatory? In the absence of a name can we not just conclude that this is the official view of the club?..............or do people know otherwise? Do you want a list of names of the full board and staff whenever an official statement is made just to show they agree? If a particular person signed it and another didn't, people on message boards would just speculate that it is an individual's opinion rather than that of the club.

They only want a name to it so they can point their accusing fingers at them if there is any kind of mistake, a bit like vultures circling a dying animal. Bloody disgraceful attitude to have, "oh lets wait for someone to make a mistake so we can pillory them". To those with that attitude I would say F*** OFF you disruptive scum no club needs people like that! There I feel better for that!

Enzo, while I will party agree with you that In the case Of what alpinejoe was referring to (the piece In the newspaper) then no It may not be to important that any name was put to anything.
You said
...........the message appeared on the official website and stayed there, unedited for weeks - can anyone explain why we need to have a particular signatory?
The answer Is very simple On this one enzo, there was a big fall out and some felt that the person who put that message on .com, was one Of the parties involved. It was the nature, Or how that message could be taken that was the problem.
I'm sure you would agree that taken the wrong way, by some In the trade Sean Is in, could do harm to his company. If It was the other party then both Merse and I felt he should have the balls to put his name to It. If It was someone else, as It could well be, then In this case putting a name to It would have saved, what ended up as even more agro.

The question only was why did all the other clubs give the names Of the people making the statements, while we only have a spokesperson. Even enzo states better communication would be welcome, something most fans also feel. When have we ever had the situation In the past, at our club, when statements were put out In the public, by Mr Anonymous, I have never known It before, have you? so can you give me any good reason why a name can 't even be put to a simple newspaper article.

tufc01, you ask what he has to do to convince the doubters he has what it takes to get us promoted? Er..........get us promoted obviously. He bottled it last season, we need to make sure he doesn't do it again. If he blows it again this season he may well condemn our club to years in this pub league. We are trusting Buckle to succeed where he failed last season. Let's hope he learned from his mistakes. Dave even Buckle has said In the newspaper, that the job is not done yet, just because we have gone eleven games undefeated, no one would disagree with his words. You should remember that It was not he who got us In this pub league, as you like to call It. You are foolish to call It a pub league anyway, all teams that have ended up In the BSP, have found It a very tough league and one not easy to get Out Of. Exeter City took five years, we just failed at our first attempt. Yes we know as does Buckle that mistakes were made and those played their part In Exeter going up and not us, but I think you will find that Exeter were over the two games the getter team and deserved to go up. At the start Of last season, every fan I talked to, every fan who posted On a forum were all saying the same thing. They were saying that after the Roberts mess, they would take mid table In the first season In the BSP. Simply because the club and team needed to be rebuilt. That all changed when we went top and now most fans expectations went far too high, forgetting what they were all prepared to except at the start Of the season. Buckle In his first season nearly got the club back up, I wonder how many first year managers have got their team promoted? not many If any at all. Buckle has made mistakes, please don't tell me that you haven't, he got It all wrong at the start Of this season, with what he was trying to do, that simply did not work. Do you think the eleven game unbeaten run, Is down to luck? or that fact that he has learned from his mistakes, put his hand up and put right what was wrong. You say This is a huge season, make or break for TUFC. We are trusting Buckle to succeed where he failed last season. Why Is It a make Or brake season? If we do not go up this season, are you saying Its the end Of the road for TUFC? no matter what happens this season, our club will still be strong next season to face what ever challenges It has too, that could be as a league two team, Or having to have another go at getting back to league two. Only two teams go up Dave and there are many teams who want to be the ones who go back up. These teams have fans just like us, who want the same as we do, we have no right to expect to go back up, we have to win and earn It. You really do need to start to enjoy the good times at the club, the team has been a joy to watch and I have gone home from games lately, not only happy but proud Of my team and club. If a time comes sometime later In the season, to have to question Buckle as a manager, then OK, we can do It then, but at this time, he has the team playing well and getting results, so lets put our hands together and give the praise to him that he Is due.
