Interesting to note that Shrewsbury have signed another keeper on loan today for a month ( Gilkes from Blackpool) as notified by BBC ceefax It seems they would be happy for Bevan to stay longer, but Poke is reported to be coming back on Monday, I can't see us keeping both keepers on loan, due mainly to our poor gates of late. If "He who sits up high" has already decreed that Poke is going to sign in January Dave, why would we need to keep Beavon???

Shrews new loan signing is for a month. We could do with Bevan for another month loan as it doesn't look as if Poke is fully fit as yet. Greavsie's Blog entry would suggest Bevan may be here a bit longer, also.

Good debate fellas, and Merse, when reading your original post I to got a warm fuzzy feeling as it did elude to the old " I've got some inside info" which pointed towards Poke.
Which one would I prefer ? Poke, he chose to come back to us after his loan spell last season. We all desperately wanted him back and he hasn't really put foot wrong in any games he has played for us. Beavon is a very good keeper at this level, and had it not been for Poke's desire to come back to Devon and play for Torquay United I'd have been at a split decision. BUT Poke has proved he wants to play for us and that puts him ahead of Beavon in my eyes. Which one could we sign permanently? ask the no shows, it may give them a reason to actually attend a game at Plainmoor and put their money were their wingeing Torbay mentality may be lived out in reality !

Greavsie's Blog entry would suggest Bevan may be here a bit longer, also. Unless there is a change of policy from Southampton that whilst on loan Poke cannot become cup tied and the fact that he has yet to play a game since his injury, we need Bevan for next week's game with Oxford and that would entail a third month's loan being instigated. Dave highlights the economics of it, fair enough but victory over Oxford would underwrite that expense would it not? The big problem over signing Poke is the wage differential between Southampton (which is why they want anyone they can off the books at the moment!) and Plainmoor. Whilst he can "stay a Saint" but a "Gull on loan" Poke is in an ideal situation for himself and doesn't need to "jump ship" at this time. I'm still certain that the "deal" is agreed between Plainmoor and St Marys and it is for the player to make the final decision. I emphasize this is my belief, not to my knowledge!

Thank you Big Man, you have been incredible! I'm, not so sure this will be his last week here Merse, reading todays HE, I get the feeling his loan will be extended again, maybe even to the end of the season? Poke it states will have to sit on the bench and bide his time, now if Bevan was going back after this week end, why would such a remark be made? Poke would simply start in goal after the Oxford game. It could mean the club really feel that with our cup games and the fact that we are pushing hard to win promotion, we will need to have two first class keepers here until the end of the season.

My understanding of the loan situation with Bevan is he can only be signed for a further 28 days. This extra months loan will take him up to his maximum stay as 3 months is the total period a player can stay on loan at one club in a season.
However we could sign him on a season long loan but only during a transfer window. As it stands there will be a period between Bevan going back and the transfer window opening again.
I would love to keep both, but that is down to the player if given the option. As Merse states a victory over Oxford would more than cover the expense.

Thanks for explaining that Pikey, I'm never up with all these transfer rules these days, I have not heard that he has singed for another month, but if he did, then it would take him through most of December and the gap before the window opened would only be a small one.

Merse has done what he does best and that is to hedge his bets, he won't come out and say a deal has been done for Poke to sign, but gives the nod as if he really does know.
The way he worded his post gives him the chance to say, there I was correct, or I did not say he had singed only a deal might be done. If such a deal had been done then why would he still be cup tied? it would not matter as I can't see him playing in any cup games for Southampton.
If we were to keep Bevan for one more month and beat Oxford and get into the third round of the FA Cup, we would need to be able to play Poke in the third round. That is unless its Bevan who we sign in the transfer window.
I think we stand more chance of signing Bevan than Poke and If Southampton will not let him play cup games, then maybe no deal has been done, or is about to be done.

Hedging one's bets is always a sensible choice Dave.

Nothing of the sort.................when the news of the oncoming press conference was broken I stated that I believed Poke had signed at last. That's documented on this thread. Sadly the press conference turned out to be something completely different. I've also stated my reading of the Southampton policy on Poke being cup tied whilst he's on loan and the need therefore for Bevan for another month. I'm not making any bets and therefore do not need to "hedge" any. I've not claimed to know anything (but you know that Dave don't you) therefore have no intention of saying "I told you so"This site is fine with plenty of postings Dave, without the need to constantly try to drag me into defending something YOU have deliberately misrepresented from my postings.

You stated
I've good reason to believe that Michael Poke has signed for us at last.
Then went on to say
I'm sure you would all join me in saying "Thank you Big Man, you have been incredible!
Then you later say
I didn't claim to know or have been told anything; I posted that I "had good reason to believe"
The last remark posted because you had been challenged as you got it wrong, now the real question, what ever gave you a GOOD REASON to believe Poke was signing.
Forgive me here, but if I make a post on here and say I have good reason to believe what I'm posting, it will because I have and not because I tried to pre guess something, thats dangerous, as you can get it wrong.
So as you got it wrong, as you had no real good reason, you come out with I didn't claim to know or have been told anything
So please tell us what the good reason was? I mean no one told told you anything, you claim you don't know anything, so maybe you have a crystal ball, what can we call you, I know Mystic Merse.
Sites doing well and getting good quality posts on so many of its boards, what has that got to do with the fact, that you have been challenged for trying to make out you were in the know, when clearly you are not.

No witch hunt Merse nor bored, running the site stops me from getting that, I have asked a question based on what you posted, put in a polite way, far more polite than your post to D.G.E.P. Seems I have touched a nerve end, just you be a man Merse and admit when you have got it wrong, again.

Excuse me gentlemen, but aren't these constant petty bickerings the reason why most of us found ourselves on this site. We are surely edging ever closer to the next appearance of an embryonic alternative competitive site for ADULT Gulls fans. Talk to each other and sort out your problems - at a game, via PMs, on the phone or somewhere else, but please DESIST or we'll all end up jumping ship, AGAIN. You should both know better at your ages Was it that great philosopher, Thumper, who once said: "If you can't say something nice, then don't say anything at all" Would MODERATORS please moderate this puerile, tetchy, petty, humourless lunacy, please?
