Well by 10am it was clear I was not going to be able to get very far and so came home. Not sure how things are going to be in North Devon tomorrow, but I'll give it a go.
Was this forecast for today? not sure I heard Devon was expected to have as much snow as it has in places.

A****n got lucky as the black country derby was postponed yesterday. I have a feeling our home match with Wigan will meet the same fate.

No fresh snow has fallen since Saturday but its forecast. I had to catch a bus to work as my old car couldnt get off the drive I fully expect our match with Wigan to be called off I'm not if any of my other local teams are at home thisweek or not but if Walsall are at home I can see them too falling victim to the weather- they had 6 in a row postponed last season.

It takes a lot for me not to get to work, but today and last Saturday I could not take the risk. I`m sure my employees can do without me for a change, mind you I will probably have 2 days work to do when I get back. Here are some pictures I took of the snow outside my house and neigbourhood in Kingsteignton this Morning. The first three were taken abound 8.15,as you can see by the tyre marks I didn`t get very far. The others were taken around 12.15,this was after me and my neighbours had been busy with our shovels. Cars were still struggling to get up the hill(pics 7&8),so this is when I definantly decided to stay at home!

We may look only a small island when you look at any globe, but how different weather wise it can be on any given day from one end of the county to the other. There I was this morning driving along the coast road to Weymouth at 7am when on the news I heard the people up in Scotland were having to dig their cars out of the snow. I was driving past wonderful bunches of daffodils as I got to the top of the famous Abbotsbury Hill and there before me was the best sky I have ever seen from this spot.

What a view!! We are a small country, but don't forget that Great Britain is the world's 9th largest island (and only slightly smaller than Victoria Island in Canada (8) and Japan’s Honshu (7)). It's about 1,000 miles from the Isles of Scilly (the most South-Western of the British Isles) to Shetland (the most North-Eastern) – that's a greater distance, for example, than the distance between London and Rome (900 miles) or London and Madrid (700), and a distance that compares to London to Tunis (1,100) or London to Algiers (1,000)! The maritime influence on our climate, however, means we get considerably less latitudinal variation that might otherwise be expected. And for all the moaning about the British weather (and gloating from expats!), we rarely experience extremes: no prolonged droughts, no hurricane season, no major earthquakes, no months of blizzards – just enough wind and rain to keep the whingers happy! ;D

Have a guess which is the biggest Island on the planet and also the smallest continent. Bit of debate on that one, Aus. The world's largest island is said to be Greenland. The world's smallest continent is said to be Oceania (which includes a place called Australia apparently)

Cracking shot again there, Dave. What a view!! Thanks for the great explanation Lambie The day time view from the very same spot shows the view much better. I'm sure you will know that the Portland Island is joined to Abbotsbury by the famous Chesil Beach that is 29 kilometres (18 mi) long, 200 metres (660 ft) wide and 15 metres (50 ft) high. I have been told that fishermen landing on the beach in the dark, know just what part of the beach they are on by the size of the shingle. It is always a wonderful and changing view from the top of Abbotsbury Hill, but as I have said before, going down over the hill in the winter due to it never being treated, can be a very dangerous thing indeed. By the way if you do ever go to Portland, if you want to leave the island alive, then do not ever mention the word Rabbits to any islander.

I've always been interested in Chesil Beach but have never been. Would like to go cycling around that part of the world during June or September time - that hill certainly looks inviting Interesting thing about the rabbits, aren't some fishermen supposed to be superstitious about rabbits as well? And does that mean stuartb can't order Welsh Rarebit if he ever visits Portland?

Only if my Welsh family want me to because being Devonian I would much prefer cider, Devon pasty followed by a scone with clotted cream with jam on top

Lambie, the part of the hill you see in the picture, it the almost flat part of the hill about 300 yards from the very top of it. Once you get past the part you see it really starts to drop very severely with a few bends chucked in for good measure and a very nasty left hander right at the very bottom
Rabbits - The Portland Taboo Word
Many people on Portland believe the rabbit is bad luck! Even to say the word could send Portlanders into a stupor, fearing of what might happen.
The fear of rabbits is based on the fact that quarry men would often see rabbits emerging from their barrows immediately before a rock fall. Such rock falls often injured and even killed quarry workers; therefore, it is understandable why rabbits became associated with bad luck.
A clear demonstration of how Portlanders feel about the word Rabbit was shown with the release of the Wallace and Gromit film "The Curse of the Were- Rabbit" A billboard poster advertising the film, on the side of a building on Portland, had to be reproduced especially for Portland to say "The Curse of the Were-Bunny".
