The players will need to put the big disappointments of the game against Rotherham quickly behind them, with this game coming just three days later.
I feel if they play the way they did on Saturday, then they have every chance of getting the three points. Not sure how long Hargreaves is out for, but if he is not fit for this game, then I would expect to see the same starting eleven, who started against Rotherham.
We will have some games coming up soon that you might feel look easier and ones we stand a good chance of getting points, but no team has really turned us over this season and we have competed well with the clubs near the top.
Putting the ball in the net still seems a problem, but I feel that will change soon and as long as you don't let the other team score, you only need one gaol to win anyway.

Slightly off theme I suppose but just a quick follow on from two postings on this thread, the Vale v Torquay programmes by timbo and merse's explanation from his days as commercial manager at Plainmoor as to why the squad photo had them wearing tracksuits.
I noticed Dave Smith sitting next to Twitch in the front row and am interested in hearing comments from Merse, and indeed anybody else who is able to contribute, as to what he was like not as a player but to have around the place at a football club. A Nottingham boy he was only with us for I think for about a season and a half having joined from Notts County, his real love still today. I didn't see him play much because his time with us coincided with one of my periods working away, but I have now got to know him quite well (he has been licensee of the Duke of Cornwall pub in Ivybridge for over 15 years). He is one of the biggest practical jokers around (sometimes almost to the point of being irritating!) and that is what I am really interested in. The 'characters' at a club often make more of a contribution to the overall atmosphere in the changing room and consequently the team performance on the pitch than the recognised 'star' players. I would imagine, judging by what he is like now, that Smithie was such a character, but I would be interested to hear some first hand accounts.
His son Ben, who would have been a young child at the time that team photo was taken, turned out to be a good player himself. Similar in stature to his dad so not blessed with height, he was on Argyle's books and had a couple of seasons playing as a semi-professional in Australia. Ben is now back in the UK and is a first team squad member for Ivybridge Town in the South Western Penninsula League, although normally on the bench these days as the full 90 minutes is a bit much. As far as being a supporter is concerned he doesn't take after his dad .... Ben is an out and out Gulls fan!
Just so I can claim to have been on theme all along I am looking forward to our home game with Vale on February 13th, the day after my birthday, as one of my friends in Ivybridge is an exiled Vale fan (big John Rudge admirer as well of course!) so it will be nice to entertain him on his first visit to Plainmoor.

Whenever I read posts imparting the "knowledge" that certain players are a "waste of a signing" and should be moved out forthwith, I think of Smudger and imagine him being on the end of such invective if he had played in the days of the internet. Although he rarely held down a starting place for any amount of matches and was small of stature rather like Mickey Somers in the old days and Danny Stevens today, I would say he was an invaluable squad member and if truth be told a very talented footballer. He was however, a total Barn Pot; a pain in the arse and a cruel mimic of the highest order. He had Brian Clough and Jimmy Sirrell off to a tee and I reckon he has to take the responsibility for Mike Green turning grey seemingly overnight. I think his "dump in the bath" is legendary, but there were other times like when a night in a Nottingham hotel (whatever were the club thinking of booking THAT location?) and a fire alarm spring to mention...................if only for the fact that only half the squad managed to assemble in the car park meaning that they were either about to perish in the "flames" or were out enjoying the city's legendary night life and there was always a suspician that a rat that got on the loose in the dressing room one morning after training might well not have found itself there by chance. Anyway the poor thing became a bloodied and battered corpse before long and guess who administered the execution with a broom? I used to dread reffing Smithy when he played in the SDL for Windsor United as a ref's whistle was also on his considerable range of talents as was his insistence to pace out "ten yards" back with his little legs taking as short a step as he could get away with before ridiculing my interpretation. Together with Roy Davies, John Turner, Donal Murphy and Jimmy Dunne; Smithy probably taught Mike Green more about the perils of management than any FA Coaching Manual could have.....................every club needs them to lift the spirit of the place and the game would be a poorer one without them!

Following on the subject of humour in football, wouldn't it be great if someone could trawl up the Herald Express report of the match at Plainmoor between The Gulls and Notts County in the League Cup when both sides decided to go toe to toe and kick lumps out of one another. Pedro Richards of the visitors had me pissing myself when he picked the back pocket of referee Bill Bombroff's shorts and relieved him of his red card. The poor match official had as near a nervous breakdown on that pitch trying in vain to keep order as I've ever seen and must have handed out near double figures in "yellows" and was quivering in his dressing room like a jelly fish a good hour after the final whistle. The giant Brian "Killer" Kilkline was absolutely fearsome out on the pitch whilst old maestro Jimmy Sirrell bore the slyest of smirks accross his lips in the dugout.

Torn muscle, he`ll be out for about 6 weeks! Read Mr Hargreaves blog and you'll find that this is wrong. He says that if he had played there was a chance that he could make the tear worse and would then be 6-8 weeks. It may be ok for the weekend. Dave, more than one line ;D

According to todays HE, 'Tarzan' could be back in the squad for the Port vale game. If you can get a copy of the HE and look at the 'front' page of the Torquay bit, it shows Lynch tackling Smith - they are that close it looks like he has his hand up Smith's shorts. DT's opinion of the ref would mirror mine and a few others.

If he is in the squad then Bucks will play him and Thompson misses out again. Prsonally i would put Hargreaves on the bench. I would also sit Sills next to him and let Rendell have a go with Benyon, worked wonders at Burton and havent won away since in teh league.... More late goal drama i reckon as we go down 3-2.....

Well that doesn`t make sense cause he told me after the game in the Gulls Nest that he`d be out for six weeks! Unless he mean`t he could be out for six weeks, or I miss-heard him!

Yes a good friend indeed and one you will be dining with over Xmas and yes one who hates unfounded rumours, but how did you know that?
