I too fully concur with those fighting Nicho's corner. He is a far better defender than people give him credit for due to his positional sense and underrated aerial ability. As for his left foot, there is no doubt we don't currently have anybody capable of consistently delivering quality balls into the box like he can.
The thing that wound me up most about Saturday, and I know I'm not the only one to think this, was that Nicho has never played anywhere near as badly as Sam Cox did on Saturday. He was so poor and constantly got caught out of position and pushed off the ball too easily. He also offered nothing going forward. Don't get me started on the fact that he can't use his left foot at all!
I know certain people will say that he has pace, which I agree he does, but league two is a tough, physical league and he is nowhere ready to cope with this.

Is using capitals your way of shouting? Someone needs to shout at you aussie, I had hoped when your dental pain problems were sorted we would see the witty aussie we all loved come back on here. You are fast becoming the forums number one at upsetting other members, sarcasm is the very lowest form of wit and crudeness is best left in the gutter, its about time you started to show a bit more respect, or is it just a thing that Aussies do.

I give the F**K up! I tried to be reasonable and none of you can be bothered to read what I wrote properly, I AGREE NICHO HAS SOME VERY GOOD QUALITIES AND I SAID HE WOULD BE PLYING HIS TRADE AT A HIGHER LEVEL IF HE HAD PACE! There can you all read it better now it`s in big print! FFS

My dental pain problems are from over, in fact yesterday I had another tooth out but this has nothing to do with it! If I upset phipsy then he needs to grow up, like Merse infered and I said a comparison between Bobby Moore and Kevin Nicholson is rubbish, deserves all the stick that it gets, well Merse never infered the stick bit that was mine, and then he goes on too say he has coaching badges, coaching badges for what exactly, he obviously knows a lot about football then to compare full/wing back position to centre half, Christ every one moans when Bucks put Robbo at Right back because he`s a centre half, show me exactly where I`m wrong, I only got sarky cause he thought " well if I say I`ve got coaching badges then that makes me smarter than him and he will have admit defeat" well bugger that! All I started out trying too say was that I agreed in principle up to a point but no that`s not enough is it? Oh no I can`t have a view on it I must agree entirely and tow the party line, b0llocks to that if I can`t have my own opinions then stuff all of it!

I've got to say, 'Phipsy' probably has more understanding of football coaching, tactics and player awareness than most on this site... And has more knowledge of the strengths and weaknesses of the various Torquay United teams having watched and studied them all over the decades. I know he won't get involved in defending himself so I thought i'd put the record straight on his behalf.. Promise this is not a dig at anyone, just wanted to expain...

Haven`t got a problem with that Leigh, but if he is so knowledgeable about football then why the hell is he making ridiculous comparisons and why can`t I have a point of view, I only played to semi-pro level, I`ve only been FIFA approved as a ref so what the hell do I know, I only responded to his (imho) ridiculous remark because the way he came across was condescending and then he starts shouting at me, that`s spot on if want to wind me up! Two other people disagree with his comparison of Bobby Moore( centre back ) and Kev at left back but they didn`t get it in the neck for their troubles! And I`m not shouting at you or disagreeing just trying to get people to see my side of it, Christ I never even totally disagreed with him in fact I, apart from one small bit, agree with him and what he has said yet I seem to attract all this attention! The other day I got my post removed which was perfectly understandable because of it`s content but again I was only responding to someone else and their post which had the initial name calling in it didn`t get removed until I had a moan about it, may be I`m just feeling sleighlty hard done by here! Or is it stitched up?

BACK TO KEVIN NICHOLSON.I HAVE WATCHED THE GULLS PLAY FOR OVER 55 YEARS AND WOULD INCLUDE NICO ASONE OF THE BEST LEFT SIDED BACKS, WING BACKS OR WHATEVER YOU WANT TO CALL HIM WITH AMONG THE BEST. THESE WOULD INCLUDE BILL KITCHENER,PHIL SANDERCOCK,COLIN ANDERSON,BRIAN MGLINCHY AND PHIL KING. NO I DONT CONSIDER MYSELF A FOOTBALL GENIOUS BUT NOT A COMPLETE MUG EITHER AS MY F.A. COACHING BADGES WOULD PROVE. Having been a supporter for about the same length of time, I would agree with this entirely, in fact I would go as far as to say that Kevin Nicholson had, or indeed still has, a sweeter left foot than any left back we have ever had. Yes, he labours somewhat when a winger gets past him, which is why I posted this on another thread on 27 January: Interesting solutions to our potential current dearth of wingers.
For all the comments about his lack of pace, lack of this, lack of that, I feel that, in the absence of Kevin Nicholson, his ability to put corner kicks, free kicks and throw ins into dangerous areas is seriously missed.
If Carlisle is still injured and Thomson departed, then we have only one genuine winger left at the moment, Danny Stevens. Why not play Nicholson on the left wing, encourage him to cover Adam Smith but also get further forward when we attack, and still have the benefit of his accuracy from set pieces and crosses in open play ?
I await calls of derision, but believe that it would be worth a shot in the short term, to see how it works. There was actually one call of derision and one puzzled smiley !! Admittedly we have been able to retain Jake Thomson, however Carlisle is not fully fit and Stevens struggles in most games, and I don't see any reason to go back on what I said then. I personally am convinced that the menace produced by Nicholson's corner kicks from the right and free kicks from anywhere, not to mention his enormous throws, is desperately missed this season. I just can't imagine how he feels to have been supplanted by two right-footed youngsters who have pace, yes, and trickery, but nowhere near the threat offered when we have set pieces near goal.

I would go along with that but with the caveat of considering at just what level each individual competed for us. When that is taken into consideration, John Bond played two levels higher than Niicho has played his most effectively for us and I would also suggest that both Bobby Baxter and George Allen ]were supreme craftsmen in that position. Baxter's crossing was as deadly as Nicholson's and he had the pace to recover his position whenever he ventured forward and he possessed a canonball shot. Allen didn't have pace but played in a much slower and more considered era; his ratio of keeping possession with his passing was second to none.

With Nico, it's weighing up his strengths and weaknesses. Are we a better team with him in it (Experience - long throws - reliable left boot) or without (A tad on the slow side and getting skinned by winger after winger after winger).
Me, I'm in the camp that I feel young Smithy is a better all round option.

Just catching up and read this and must admit that I was going to post something similar - that Nicho can be turned and has no pace but his 'assists' are weapon (I think) we have missed in a few games this season. When you're playing a team who can play deep, pass and defend; you're going nowhere and neither are they - then it's time for something completely different as Mr Cleese used to say. In my mind we have nothing to lose but mediocrity sometimes. I think of Stoke and what they do - do their fans complain? They know they play more football than the media gives them credit for but they're damn sure happy regardless when they grab that goal from the defence's panic at their set pieces! Football is a game in the head as well as the feet. When I was playing - put me on the wing against some fat bloke and I think 'happy days are here again', but I have to skin him, keep control and whip in the right ball for the strikers - put me CM and I'm marking* some 6' 4" well built boy** and I'm cacking myself when I know they've got some b#gger who can launch it at us with accuracy!! *You just know the Centre Backs are hiding somewhere pulling the shirt of some midget at the time, trust me it's happened too many times! **Stand on his toes, see how high he jumps then! ;D
Anyway, it's not going to happen, I don't know the plans for the rest of the year so I'll just keep with my pre-season wish of staying in the league. And also get to see some more games and not ruin my life by complete disorganisation by missing the Hereford match! Also will be in the Bay next month when we are away!!! Oh fu...!
