I fear that the swift attempts by mandelsongull & others to spin 'Bigotgate' as a 'non story' are destined to failure. Peter Mandelson won't have been the first person to choose that particular phrase to describe 'Dave' and his colleagues, but perhaps he should have used quote marks "Man calls old crone ranting about immigrants 'bigot'" is a ridiculous 'story' stirred up (and choreographed) by media outlets with a vested interest in the result of the election. It's only significant because it suits them to present the election (in a FPTP system) as some sort of quasi-presidential election for the large proportion of the electorate that is politically ignorant and intellectually impoverished.

Good edit Lambeth! I was getting worried about you intellectuals not being able to spell but you did spot it quickly. I would have to agree with you for once this election campaign is awful. Bring on the World Cup!!

Correct spelling has more to do with one's memory and typing skills than intellect. Pre-empting a cheap counter-point does not, however Oh, and whether people agree with me or not is of little importance to me, as you may have noticed

Is there any difference between UKIP and the BNP. I have not seen any from the campaign literature. By the way, BNP deny climate change, DTG.
If I voted with my natural leanings, Labour, it would be wasted in my constituency. So, as before, I won't.

Correct spelling has more to do with one's memory and typing skills than intellect. Pre-empting a cheap counter-point does not, however Oh, and whether people agree with me or not is of little importance to me, as you may have noticed I had of course noticed that Lambeth which is probably why I felt an irresistable overwhelming desire to wind you up! Sorry. It will come as a surprise to you though that on this occasion you are not right in that spelling is not to do with memory but is to do with a firm knowledge and understanding of the rules of a language, and typing skills are just an indication of the care a person takes over things. I would agree though neither are that important if you can make yourself understood. You would have some difficulty picking an argument with me on this particular thread though as I have not at any stage indicated my political views. I do of course have them. Indeed I have already voted and have put my trust in Royal Mail to duly deliver my democratic right in time to make a real difference (mind you like Dave as a Paignton resident voting in the Totnes based constituency I was less than happy living in the rural South Hams having to post my vote to the Plymouth Civic Centre! ... bit of gerrymandering been going on somewhere I suspect!). You did clearly state your own views Lambeth early on in this thread although since then you have confused me a couple of times with your impression of a swingometer, your stance being dependent on which particular post you were responding to. As you said yourself though introducing a myriad of viewpoints is what a debate is all about, and I would not disagree although I don't think I would describe people I perceived as not agreeing with me as simpletons, useful idiots, or intellectually challenged. I did have a little inward smile to myself on Tuesday (something I am monitoring and make notes on in case in the future I need specialist help) when you had a pop at people who put 'just my opinion' in their posts, stating (correctly) that as it is their post and they are not quoting somebody else then of course it is their opinion. The aforementioned little inward smile came about as only three days earlier on your very first post on this thread you had finished your first sentence with 'imo'. What is that meant to mean if it is not 'in my opinion'. Words fail me! (you will be pleased to know) so off to work now. A lot of driving today between jobs but looking forward to enjoying the beautiful Devon scenery. Up the A38 to Exeter, then North Devon Link to Barnstaple, then A39 and across country to Week St Mary, then Tavistock, and finally across the moors to Ivybridge. Beautiful! Must take some CD's with me and avoid the radio as I was finding this particular election irritating before I voted, and now that I have it is utterly pointless. Hope you too have a good day Lambeth and I look forward to cut and thrust debates on football related matters in the future. You never know, you might even get an opinion out of me

There’s no need to apologise, Stefano. One has to be able to take some if one is to dish it out. I'm aware that English has rules, but I still argue that applying these rules has more to do with memory and paying attention than it does with intelligence. "IMO" is a figure of speech; different in the same way that writing "I believe..." is from ending a post with "That’s what I believe anyway". I'm pleased it gave you an inward smile though. Hope you enjoy your scenic drive...ignoring conversations about the election is a good idea if you have no interest in it

Must take some CD's with me and avoid the radio as I was finding this particular election irritating before I voted, and now that I have it is utterly pointless. There are at least thirty channels you can watch on your TV and not suffer the election....................they are numbered 601-631, although I think the "Rochdale Bigot" story owes as much to The Disney Channel than any serious news coverage ~ oh for a hidden mike on anyone of prominence who has to suffer mixing with the hoi poloi. Talking of Rochdale and politics, who remembers the honourable member for that constituency some thirty years ago? You couldn't accuse Cyril Smith of living off the fat of the land he WAS the "Fat of the Land"! Thirty stone I would have thought, and so wide his head looked like a pea on a drum, I once saw the Liberal MP for Rochdale sitting at Spotland and wondered just how he managed to squeeze his fat arse onto one of those little seats. It was reported he said that at the time of his 1972 election to Parliament after a lifetime in council politics in the town, the Liberal Party could have needed just one taxi to fit the whole of their Parliamentary representation into; but after he got to Westminster they now needed two! Nice one Cyril! ;D

I always say I'm at a funny age but my mother says I've always been like it!! Scenic drive was awful as it started lashing down about 30 minutes after I left home and in North Devon visibility was down to about 30 metres. Just came through the last stretch across Dartmoor from Yelverton to Ivybridge at about 15mph to 20mph because of the poor visibility and the lambs wandering in the road. Despite that I'm in a very jolly mood! Finished for this week and off to London tomorrow for the weekend, so will look out for you Enjoy the Leaders Debate this evening as much as I enjoyed Barca v Inter last night (what a defender that Lucio is, almost on a par with the Pickler!). No point in me watching tonight (although I did watch the others) as with my vote in the post I can't change my mind now! ;D

Enjoy the Leaders Debate this evening as much as I enjoyed Barca v Inter last night (what a defender that Lucio is, almost on a par with the Pickler!). That was some game last night wasn't it, proof that the best players in the world can be isolated and made ineffective by cutting off their supply of the ball. It reminded me of our visit to Turf Moor all those years ago when we took a 2-0 first leg lead up to Burnley and for ninety minutes they threw the kitchen sink at us, all to no avail until they too scored in the last five minutes and the crowd which had once been terrifying, but lapsed into silent anguish gave it one last blast. It's great for an away side to "silence the crowd" ~ rather like drawing the snake's venom and then applying the "Coup de Grace". I said sometime ago after watching him play for Brazil at The Emirates, that Lucio makes Terry and Ferdinand look like third raters and goalkeeper Julio Caesar is simply the best in the world bar none. That was Inter at their magnificent best in the traditions of Cattenacio and Herrera, and as wonderful passers of the ball that Barca are, they couldn't ever get that killer pass in and take two or more defenders out as they do with ease with most other sides. Possession is one thing, possession without incision is pointless and Mourinho knows that to the 'nth degree...................a fascinating clash of styles. No training for Anthony tonight, he's on the settee with ice on a strained tendon just above his left ankle trying to get fit for for an important A Class league game tomorrow night and a game for Arsenal on Saturday morning. Too much football? I don't think so, rather the residue of last Friday's physical game and a couple of training sessions since when maybe he should have rested then...................kids are difficult to pin down when all they want to do is play football, football, football. I'm on a day of observation from the hospital and been up there once today as it is and have to report back there at 8pm to collect my monitoring equipment to record my sleep pattern tonight....................no slipping next door for a "chat" tonight then!

I'm not sure they cut off the supply of the ball Merse, maybe cut off the effective supply of it...check out the passing stats: Barcelona passes completed: 575 Inter Milan passes completed: 68 You've got to be some defensive outfit to make that difference count for only a one-goal defeat But....getting back on topic....vote me!

I can be a tad pedantic at times! I always say I'm at a funny age but my mother says I've always been like it!! Opinions and personality traits can become exaggerated online. I don't know either of them personally, but I would guess that davethegull does not spend all his time in Thailand telling people how useless he thinks Paul Buckle is, or wearing an 'infowars' t-shirt, and I don't imagine Merse takes his white horse and sword everywhere he goes either. I could be wrong, but that's my hunch. If you do bump into me in London, I will be the breathless bloke jogging along the South Bank in his Torquay shirt It was an enthralling game last night. As much as I admire a lot of what Arsene Wenger has done at Arsenal, it would be interesting to hear his views on that game. I will be watching the debate tonight, political geek that I am. I already know where my vote is going, but I still need to decide where my bets are going before the real fun begins after the polls close on May 6.

Interesting to note that one of the Labour party candidates in Bristol has 'tweeted' the total votes for each party (based on the postal votes counted to date) in her constituency.
She seemed relatively pleased with her support to this point although I suppose the 'Duffy' effect & tonight's debate will cause some who have not yet voted to reconsider their options.
What with the Governor of the Bank of England stating that the winners of the election will have to implement policies which will then keep them out of power for a generation it is increasingly looking like an Election to lose.

Oops if memory serves me correctly she is guilty of a criminal offence if she has done what is alleged!!

As for climate change only an idiot would deny that, it's changing naturally all the time. It's "man made" climate change that's in dispute.
