Think I should start a thread for Exeter School (thought we were snobs but probably weren't) members of this forum, but thought I'd have more luck with my next school, Teignmouth Grammar (we knew we were snobs till amalgamating with the secondary modern) but realised it would probably only be me and Bobbytanz posting on here.... Another ex Teignmouth high school lad here.......started in '79, the year it became a comprehensive. Too many days spent in the "Purple Penny" or on the pier curtailed my stay though.......and finally got suspended in the January of the 5th year.....but allowed to sit and (mostly fail) my O Levels that summer . Hey ho, nothing wrong with starting full time in the fruit trade aged 15

I'd forgotten all about Squelchers until I followed Mr W's link - what incredible stuff can be found on the internet. .........Cripes, Jon - I remember those Squelchers now - having looked at 'em on "Nigels' Gallery" at the link - what a site, eh - a total and utter geek-out - wow, what memories flood back - I don't have much recall of tinfoil badges at all although I certainly remember some of the cards that he has illustrated of players at the time though - I guess my main memory (apart from something very distant of the '70 World Cup with stickers - not Panini, but FKS Publications it would appear)..... cards.littleoak.com.au/index_fks.html ......go a little way down on the 1970/71 section for the World Cup Soccer Stars Mexico 70 part - stickers.......... cards.littleoak.com.au/index_fks_albums.htm ......album - the World Cup Soccer Stars Mexico 70 one again.... .....was the '74 World Cup with its' Panini sticker collection (this was also the World Cup when the special Radio Times Guide had Jimmy "Jim The Chin" Hill on the front kitted out in his ref's kit, whistle poised I think - sad what you recall isn't it?)............ ............really the only World Cup for stickers I distinctly remember WAS the '74 one as I joined up in the RN in Apr '78 and was running around HMS RALEIGH in basic training for the period the '78 one was taking place with precious little time for such things as stickers............ ..........sadly the "Nigels' Gallery" has very little on the '74 World Cup Panini sticker collection - due to t'wonders of t'interweb however.......... archive.liveauctioneers.com/archive4/agon-sportsworld-de/15940/7293_1_lg.jpgwww.liveauctioneers.com/item/5256948.....further investigation of this site reveals a start asking price for a mint collection of aforementioned stickers is £100 - Gawd - wish I'd kept 'em (although I STILL have a full set of the 1972/3 FA Cup Centenary Medals from Esso!)......... .....this is also of interest...... www.ebookee.com/Panini-s-Stickers-Albums-World-Cups-1970-2010_611234.html.............aah, the memories of it all - us lot walking round from Reddenhill Road where we lived to the newsagents in St Marychurch Road to buy packets of those World Cup '74 stickers - see, we were a Cary Park footy gang - a few names some of you might recall from those far-off halycon days of local park footy up Cary Park, me and bruv Niges' neighbours Alban and Phil Williams, Rob Manning (a frequenter of Plainmoor in later years also), Steven Cocker (probably the finest footballer back in that time amongst us lot), Alan Rice, Paul Starling, even Ieun Cooper from TBGS a few times, the late Jimmy Lemonides (another fabulous player) also Jimmy Millington (now a Torquay postie) and his late brother Bobby (was also very good) - both Jimmy Lemonides and Bobby were taken tragically young - however we had very happy times at the Cary Park putting green and the tennis courts there also, grass dart fights against the kids from the gang (leader Bobby Stevens) round by Margarets' Torbay Stores in Warbro Road, oh and cricket up at Walls' Hill - where did all those years go? - and I haven't even mentioned Subbuteo, Striker, Airfix (Savages' Model Shop in Ellacombe) or Action Man yet - another time maybe.......... ......cheers all........ Chris aka Mr_W ..........PS yes I agree as well, the Subbuteo Rugby WAS complete and utter shiite (what WAS that scrum machine all about?), however the Cricket was another thing altogether............ www.peter-upton.co.uk/sub1.htm ........a truly extraordinary Subbuteo site - this is full-on uber-geek-out time here for those interested - be warned, it may take some time if you start looking!.......... (....TUFC at no.49 here - www.peter-upton.co.uk/subhw1.htm ......bizarrely, and I recall this definitely, were amber/tangerine - main stockists in Torquay were Fletchers' Sports Gear Shop, Fleet Street along with Bunces' Toy Shop, Market Street......) ......hang on I just need to play "White Horses" by Jackie - the memories are so strong now, I can smell that cut grass from those Cary Park summers circa 70-75, now wheres' that can of Top Deck cider shandy from Torbay Stores again?...... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Top_Deck_(drink)www.angelfire.com/wi/beercans/images9/fc422.gif ...ah, cheers, whose putt is it next?......

Trust you weren't the bugger who kept breaking my Super Mario Bros pinball high-score?!
The 'Purps' was great for arcade machines but they didn't repair their pinball tables when glitches occured which, as any serious pinball-player will tell you, is a major misdemeanour. All lights, flippers, bumbers, multiball plays, rubbers etc have to be operating perfectly to make the machine playable.
But back on the Pier Mr Brenner made sure that any small problem on their machines was sorted immediately. They had a real silver-ball enthusiast as one of the techies (I think he still works there!) so the tables were always spot-on.
Unfortunately pinball tables don't make money, take up too much space and need constant attention so they've all but disappeared except for a few that may still be in the Paignton arcades. (And mine at home!)

Hello, does anyone know if a torquay blazer badge is sewn on or glued on? Sewn on by their fags, man servant or Butler I believe.

Lol, thanks. I had a argument with a friend who said they were glued on and I needed a quick answer.

Just got on this site and have enjoyed reminiscing about all the teachers...My name was mentioned somewhere and I actually did move to USA and have coached football for 22 years over here. I even picked myself out in the panoramic picture as a 2nd former. Good stuff. -- Nick Cowell

I seem to recall a family called Cowell - with a "Nicholas" and a "Timothy" - having the Sunday afternoon "pitch" next to us on Broadsands beach in the 1960s!

Hey Nick you found your way here then mate? The good old days of you and me storming down the wings for Watcombe Park eh? Haven't seen or heard from any of them for yonks. I've been trying to remember the team. Fred and Bobby at full back, Andy Perret and ? Stu Foster in midfield with Mark Richards I think, you, Maurice and me up front. Who have I missed?

Of course Tim went on to an excellent football career a little closer to home - ending up as manager of Newton Abbot FC when the Coach Road club was at the top of the Devon County League. I was in the same year as Tim at Sherwell Valley and I always felt sorry for him because, although he was the best footballer in the year, the football teacher Mr Goss used to go on and on and on about what a fantastic footballer his brother Nick was!

Just found this excellent thread and had to jump in. I was at TBGS from 67-74 and some great memories surfaced reading though this. Found myself on the pics and loved reading the comments on the teachers. I posted the pics myself on freindsreunited.com if anyone is interested in getting the scans. Mr. Cowler was IMHO the best teacher at the school. Be great to hear from anyone who remembers me - Tony Bennett (not either of the Bennetts mentioned earlier in the thread or even a relative). Living in the US and still playing soccer 3 times a week. Mr Pike was good enough to take me to the hospital in his sports car after I broke my collarbone in a soccer scrimmage - should have been a penalty, clearly a deliberate trip when going for goal :-)

From Barton Downs on Page 4:
There was a Anthony Bennett in my year - he'd now be 53 coming up 54 - from the RC primary school in Paignton. We had a Bennett KD and a Bennett AD in that rather formal manner of the times.
Another lad from that school - an Argyle-supporting crypto-skinhead - was with us for a short while and I think he's now the bloke who runs the tennis school at Oldway. His presence certainly added spice to the football talk of the time.
I'm the Anthony Bennett you mention here (and actually 55 now :-))
I think the Plymouth Argyle guy you are talking about might be Keith Johnson? I'd be a bit suprised if this were the same Keith Johnson though that is now a tennis coach at Oldway. I recall the Keith I knew being a soccer nut but not really into Tennis.
