From Barton Downs on Page 4: There was a Anthony Bennett in my year - he'd now be 53 coming up 54 - from the RC primary school in Paignton. We had a Bennett KD and a Bennett AD in that rather formal manner of the times. Another lad from that school - an Argyle-supporting crypto-skinhead - was with us for a short while and I think he's now the bloke who runs the tennis school at Oldway. His presence certainly added spice to the football talk of the time. I'm the Anthony Bennett you mention here (and actually 55 now :-)) I think the Plymouth Argyle guy you are talking about might be Keith Johnson? I'd be a bit suprised if this were the same Keith Johnson though that is now a tennis coach at Oldway. I recall the Keith I knew being a soccer nut but not really into Tennis. Well Tony, I'm afraid all of us who were in 1A of the 1967 intake -the autumn term births - have now turned fifty-five. I'm one of the younger ones with a 3 December birthday. Yes, Keith Johnson - a tidy little winger, if I remember correctly. I wouldn’t have associated him with tennis either but there was an article in the Herald Express a couple of years back which suggested it could be the same person. The article appears to have disappeared from the Herald site but I did find these extracts at Highbeam.com: May 03, 2008; TONY ATKINS ON TENNIS ... Keith Johnson has travelled the world in pursuit of excellence as a tennis coach but the man who recently attended the a National PTR coaches symposium on glorious Hilton Head Island in South Carolina, USA, is perfectly at home at Oldway Mansion. Educated just a lob away at Sacred ...Herald Express (Torquay UK); May 3, 2008; TONY ATKINS ON TENNIS; 700+ words Keith Johnson has travelled...at home at Oldway Mansion. Educated...Heart School, Keith runs Oldway...was born in Plymouth - Keith has strong...facility at Oldway on Monday...shortly," saidHerald Express (Torquay UK); May 3, 2008; TONY ATKINS ON TENNIS; 700+ words Keith Johnson has travelled the world...perfectly at home at Oldway Mansion. Educated just a lob away at Sacred Heart School, Keith runs Oldway Tennis Centre and has...fairly shortly," said ... Keep typing various words into Highbeam's search engine and I guess you'll eventually get the whole article. Otherwise they'd like you to part with your credit card details to get any further. Regrettably the Herald Express photo from a more recent article is similarly truncated: Happily, the photographs below are in better shape. I saw top row, second from the right at the Hereford v Torquay match last Saturday and he’s travelling down from London for tomorrow’s match: Me? I’m Nick House.

Nick!! Wow, it's great to hear from you. I'll try to send you a private message with contact info. It's been a long time. I've been trying to chase people down through other sites (freindsreunited) so I did see some of your postings there and you could find me there too. Been scratching my head all day - I thought Barton Downs was an alias, I did get that much. I won't be getting back to a game for a litlte while - I live in the US now and for the last 28 years. Keith was a great player though I recall very strong as a defender and certainly fast enough for a winger. Glad he's had such a successful tennis career. I have the same set of mini pics you have though have not been in touch with anyone other than our seafaring freind and Rear Admiral (retired I believe) and one other person living in the wilds of Dartmoor. All the faces and names are very familiar - thanks for posting. Say high and remind me to Simon will you please! All the best and hope to chat more!!, Tony

Good to read Tony's (plugh) reply on this thread and we've been in touch several times over the last few days. I get the impression there are other old boys logging on to specifically read this thread. Meanwhile, if you're following this thread, do cross-reference to another dealing with TBGS football in the 1970s at www.torquayfansforum.com/index.cgi?board=lfc&action=display&thread=7237 ("Local Football" sub-board). Please add to it or create similar threads for other periods. Elsewhere, if you're persistent, you'll find material about Torbay Pioneer football (including programmes for early finals involving Torre Trojans).

I remember the name; one who stood out from a lower year and was known by those above. Possibly from St Marychurch?

A pleasure to meet Mr W tonight who I thank for the kind comments. Poor old Chelston surrounded by three snobs; it was tempting to give him a quick burst of "you're supposed to be at home!".

A pleasure to meet Mr W tonight who I thank for the kind comments. Poor old Chelston surrounded by three snobs; it was tempting to give him a quick burst of "you're supposed to be at home!". ............and it was also a great pleasure to meet you my dear Mr_Barton Downs (and yes, he DOES look like a Professor) - he puts in an extraordinary amount of work and research on the History and Stats on this site along with Jon - well done men, bacon sandwich all round, tea and medals - it was also of course great to see Jon again - apologies for being a bit late with this - no t'interweb access for last ten days.............. ...........Right - a quick summary of what was a very enjoyable evening spent at the Crewe game, also in the company of old friend, Lord_Tanktop and Baron_of_the_Bongos, the Progmeister himself, Mr_Phil (Hello Wemberlee!!!)_Chelstongull..................... ........watches were synchronised and I met Phil in the hallowed halls of that fine hostelry "The Union" approx 1830 - Phil had earlier, I believe, established his ancestry to a Cornish heritage so a check of fingers (5/6??) was carried out along with the old chestnut "is that a banjo you're hiding there etc etc" - ah - the old ones are (probably not) the best - in view of his new-found allegiance to t'land of t'oggie, Phil opted for a glass of Snozzle Breweries finest Tribute Ale whilst I indulged in a drop of "Blackthorns' Grand Old Chilled Apple Wine" - a flagon or five was sunk as we discussed again the likes of hidden "extra tracks" on albums, the wretched Gilmour childs' flag-hanging antics on the Cenotaph (your suggestion would probably be more effective than mine Phil!!), memories of Flox Records (much lamented), the late Gerry Raffertys' fantastic work on "Don't Speak Of My Heart" and the finest hangover song of all "Sunday Morning Coming Down" by Kris Kristofferson - us middle-aged rockers live one hell of a life as you can see - at 1930 a leisurely stroll up to the "Theatre Of Nightmares"/"House Of Eternal Pain" - and we were in.............. ............the buffet for Phil (sausage roll - more later), a quick hello to Dave R (TFF Founder) along the front barrier and to our places - Jon strolled along shortly afterwards with his TUFC scarf worn in that "over shoulder a la Chariots Of Fire stylee" so "beloved" by Phil - a quick chorus of "Here comes Lord Haw Haw" from you know who (we didn't rise to the bait!) and then nice to say hello to Barton as well - the match progressed with various ramblings and musings from us auld muzos as to the merits of Atomic Rooster, Robin of "Watership Down-related" fame as opposed to possibly Iggy Pop, and Phils' favourite expression of the moment , the linesman generally being referred to as a (sometimes Welsh) poltroon of dubious parentage - and to half time and a change to the other end of the terrace for the second half.................. ..............match-wise things were much grimmer - we were hanging on just - when suddenly a SBD "behind-burp" was delivered by a person unknown in the immediate vicinity of our group - this prompted me to comment "theres some onions in that I think" - Phil immediately defended himself with "I had a sausage roll - not me, guv" - this I can vouch for - so he smelt it but dealt it? - almost deffo not! - comments from the Grammar contingent of "must be one of those beastly Audley Park oiks", "a typical Comprehensive trick" and "definitely a stunt more suited to be pulled in Metalwork" and the like!.............. .........all in all - another thoroughly enjoyable evenings' entertainment - thanks chaps - see you soon (Phil, Nige (bruv) is deffo in for that curry when we can arrange it - we'll be in contact one of these days!)........... PS: .........we await Phils' tie and prefect badge from Tweenaway when he has scanned them in!!............. PPS: .........also good to say hello to ricardo as well late in proceedings...........

My God there's some scary photos in that line up from Barton, it's like a line up of the current Govt cabinet! Glad I started in '81 and it wasn't a bastion of Lord Snooty's then! Ha ha! Then again, I did sit next to a guy in History who's sole ambition was to be the first person to be PM of the UK and then President of the US. Wierd or what? Think my sole ambition at the time was just to stop being so ginger and get picked for Payne's 1st XV!

Minor point and off topic but your freind from History is out of luck - you have to be born in the US to be President. Moving there and becoming a Citizen is not good enough. Bob Hope was asked if he would run for President and when he pointed out the above since he was born in England he was told "Oh, we can change that rule" :-)

So Carol says to me that there were a few things forgotten from the weekend shop we urgently needed. It was a case of taking a vote between us to see who in our current health positions, stood the best chance of walking the quarter of a mile to Sainsburys and back and I sadly lost the vote. So off I trotted in the afternoon sun and when I got there I picked up one of those small shopping baskets. Got what was required and got in the queue at the checkout. At the end of each checkout were young boys( about 15 years old?) helping to pack shoppers shopping into bags. They were all so smartly dressed in the brazers with badges on and when I heard them speak I thought boy they sound so posh and speaking in that "my daddy's a millionaire " sort of voice. As the young lad was packing my bag and chatting away to me, I looked to try and work out what school or college they came from. My first thought was it must be some special boarding type cost a cool five grand a term to go there type of school. So I asked and he told me Torquay Grammer School, well knock me down with a feather, those lot really are a bunch of snobs

Yes, thanks for that Dave. Growing up on QED as I did certainly made me a snob but the other way round I'm afraid. Luckily I was well known and didn't have to take off and hide my blazer as I got off the bus home. Anyway back to the History chap - yep, he was a true Yank and just like nowadays he had a peculiar first name, you know Harrington or Winchester, something like that.

PS: .........we await Phils' tie and prefect badge from Tweenaway when he has scanned them in!!............. PPS: .........also good to say hello to ricardo as well late in proceedings........... .........and a late addendum to the above, it was also good on the night to see my old mates Dame Hen and Ben T Rhea ("The Barnet Bark Botherers" aka "The Men Who Climb Trees") who are as any fule kno ye anciente, worlde-famous Tree Gulls, who, if I didn't give 'em a mention on here, jokingly threatened possible cessation of our regular conversations, musings and debates into the likes of sock-bandaging yes or no?, juggling tomatoes, Lurch - is it human? (I believe you all know of it, about 6 foot 8, buzzcut, VERY, VERY nasty-looking and with a permanent sneer, Pop side, it wears black combat trousers, boots, a bright orange coat and seems to enjoy its' work enormously - it would also appear to work for a firm called "RESPONSE TEAM")......
- see any resemblance, anyone?, the turnstile operator with a limp and a beard called Kevin (I know, whats' the limp called? etc), formation camel racing, dress your ferret, clown shoes for goalkeepers and simpe poll reminiscing (aaah, the good old days, will we ever forget the frankly extraordinary Herrin_Gull with his football boot taping up malarkey and bizarre ramblings?!!)...............
..........so, sorted gang, let the eclecticism recommence on Saturday - good luck all you Gulls tonight - lets' get back with a win - I am just about over it now, raw, smarting still, but my Chai is at one, I feel an inner peace with footy again and once more the wind chimes and finger cymbals are ringing, the impossibly long prog rock drum solos sound out and the patchouli incense burns long into the night in Mr_W Towers - Ommmmmmmm - I'd still love us to get one back over on the Fat Controller (SE) and his web-footed, talking arrse (PR) though..........

........Mr Wade (Phil) (ex-Languages teacher of TBGS and aka Splasher aka Pince) spotted waiting outside Torbay Hospital last Fri and Sat night for a taxi - my parents' first floor flat overlooks the Cadewell Lane entrance which the ambulances and the buses use to get up to the Hospital - first time I have seen him for many, many years, he used to walk by our old house in Reddenhill Road frequently back in the day - lives Ellacombe way I think...........
.....re: Pince, I think I have this right and partly gleaned off the Friends Reunited TBGS area for old memories, back in the olden days he was referred to as an ahem "Poncey Pig" due to his slightly porcine-esque appearance etc, it was the trend back in those halcyon Monty Python-inspired schoolboy humour days to turn expressions around so it became erm "Pincey Pog" and therefore Pince, todays' TBGS Memoirs lesson over, do carry on!........
........for me anyway, he was a great Languages teacher, but was around in an age where boys could be rather robust in their teasing, nothing more - this showed I think in his lessons!........
