The 56 was a Paignton to Torquay bus that took a detour around Shorton Valley. Left into Higher Polsham Road, right into Oldway Road, left Laura Avenue, left Laura Grove, right Shorton Road, right Shorton Valley Road....

I reckon it dates from the mid 1960s and may well have come from a borough council annual holiday guide. Separate boundaries are shown for Torquay, Paignton and Brixham which suggests it pre-dates the county borough of 1968. Yet the inclusion of all three towns indicates a joint tourism marketing campaign in the run up to the launch of a Torbay identity. To a kid living on the Barton/St Marychurch frontier, Chelston itself was a mysterious place to me let alone all those 32s, 32As, 32Bs and 33s. Routes had changed by 1980 but it was only then, when I had a summer as a Devon General conductor, that things started to slot into place in my mind. I fear it's more straightforward, but less exciting, in these Stagecoach times: I can confirm (well, I think I can but it was a long time ago) that the 32 and 33 routes were extended to connect by the early 1970's. The 32 ran an anti-clockwise circuit route (and the 33 ran the same route clockwise same) from the terminus just out of your scan above. Or was it the other way around? The terminus was at the bottom of Upper Cockington lane at the end of Courtland Road. Roughly speaking points A and B in this screenshot below, one on either side of the road. I see from Google street view that there is no sign of there ever having been a bus stop at these points, and I know I was a lot smaller back then but the road doesn't even seem wide enough for a bus to stand there for 5-10 minutes and let other traffic go past it! But that was where they were, I promise. You would have been able to see the 32 parked at the stop as you walked along Courtland Road towards Upper Cockington lane. From there the bus went up UC Lane into Drake Avenue and then into Nut Bush Lane and followed the 33 route from your map: all the way to Castle Circus, then down Union Street and up Abbey Road and back along the map's 32 route. This was the way I got to Plainmoor - hop off the bus at Castle Circus and walk up St Marychurch Road and then along Bronshill Road to the ground.

Thanks Rags for the information about turning the Chelston bus services into circular routes. Maybe that was done around the same time as the 50s and 55s became a circular as well.
There was also, at the time of the National Bus Company slightly later, a spate of three-digit route numbers: 120, 131, etc. Done, so we were told, to avoid confusion with services as far away as Bristol.
Perhaps I should have bought that half-price history of Devon General after all....

.....I was just wondering if any of our illustrious TFF ex-TBGS members on here could help me out on a class-room numbering issue from back in those halycon Barton days of circa 1972-1977 that is bugging me?......... now the BIG QUESTION is room 11, was it actually the Lecture Room? - anyone remember? - or was there another rogue class-room up there I can't recall?............ And so we learned on Saturday night that Room 11 was a designated room for Prefects and Head Boys. There was a door just outside the Physics Lab (top of stairs in the right) that led to a secret sanctuary for the best and brightest. They were sworn to lifetime secrecy on the matter which is why Jon couldn't confirm it when we asked him, but the slight smirk on his face was all we needed to know that our investigations had unearthed the facts! Another Kingfisher, waiter!

Another Kingfisher, waiter! .......Oh yes indeed - excellent news - our news-hounds who were all aboard "The Great Curry/Eastern Eye Debacle" express last Saturday night certainly high-fived there - ie Chris/Pete!!... ....more Sambuca Guv!!....... .......kind of begs the question, erm, what about the classroom/room-space up at the OTHER end of the corridor on that first floor (ie near the late Mr Lockers' office/Room 13/Games Masters' Hidey-hole/Library and above the late Tommy "Woffles" Hoods' place and Rooms 8/9) - there was deffo room for a third room-space there - I don't reckon myself the Library spanned TWO classroom spaces Pete? - So potentially a SECOND Prefects' Shack up there then?....... (......possibly a proto-type "Eggheads' Lab/Private Prefects'/Head Boys' Lounge/Dining Area" but just up the other end of the corridor from the now-revealed chosen ones' sanctuary) - hmmmm?...... ........now then - to the wretched Castle Records and deffo with drop down a level steps - I rather think that actually existed at the very bottom of HIGHER Union Street (NOT the actual Union Street if you like) and DIRECTLY opposite the now-defunct SWEB offices, below the big church - kind of round the corner from what ever fast-foody joint (Subways???) is on that bend of Tor Hill Road now and Higher Union Street........ .........now to confuse the issue even bloody further - some time in the 80s/90s I greatly suspect for a short while yet another (this time SECOND HAND) record shop (ie with LPs to take a stab at timescale!) was around actually ON Tor Hill Road just up from the chemists (Pearsons/Cocks & Dunsfords??)/PO - possibly where the Madeira Inn (RIP the late John Pike) once stood and near where John Pauls' Toyshop was - help Pete - we're getting bogged here!!!!!!........... ........anyone for Savages' (Ellacombe), Bunces' (Market Street and later up St Marychurch), Bradshaws' (Union Street), Sounds' Records (by the GPO, Fleet Street) (or was it actually REALLY Soundz' Pete?), Toy Town (or even possibly Toyland?) (Lucius Street) as once owned by Paul Urbans' (TBGS class of Sep 72 entry) parents I believe (the toyshop is still there now methinks) and the greatest of 'em all by a godamnned mile, yes indeed - the mighty, mighty FLETCHERS, by TSB as was, Fleet Street - limited edition Subbuteo footy gear anyone, reckon he had it in there?............ ........who remembers Subbuteo Cricket - or even (frankly a crock) Rugby/(fantakkers) Angling?....... .....Striker?....... .......Raving Bonkers or Rock 'em Sock 'Em - come on - be strong - which was yours?............. ....stop him - the screens nurse, the screens - hes' hearing the noises again - oh dear the fighter planes again as well... ....(many of these can be taken to separate threads and I'll do it - just get em' started first!)..... ...as always AUDE SAPERE........... .....erm, who said Tuckermans' and Sangsters'?..........

Absolutely spot on, thats where it was. Seem to remember it being rather small inside. A large girl called Nicki served in there for a while and i once woke up in bed with two of her friends, but thats another thread entirely. More to the point i remember them selling a large poster sized print of the Torquay manager at that time Bruce Rioch. I suppose these days they would be selling KNILL OUT posters...

Fascinating stream of consciousness reminiscing from Mr_W. Much of it is beyond me just as I can't recall what lay beyond the TBGS physics lab. That may be a result of me being deeply traumatised by the entire physics experience. Grade 9 O level; beat that for ineptitude you bastards. I'm sure there were no nines on the Head Boy's score card. And that was in a Torquay United relegation year too. What a double!
Bunce and Co, toy and pram specialists, had been at 53 Fore Street, St Marychurch since the Dawn of Civilisation. My 1965 Kellys certainly gives prominence to the legendary Bradshaws of 11-13 Abbey Road. A magical place....

This picture from today's "i" is a disgraceful slur. I fear an ill-educated oik of a picture editor doesn't know their Churstons from their Etons. I can't remember anybody dressing like this at TBGS. Unless, of course, there's anyone who knows differently.

That's brilliant Nick but where did you find this early picture of Jon? This was from his very young days before he had a butler and chauffeur. how the years have flown

Unless, of course, there's anyone who knows differently. ........Great piccy my dear Mr_Barty - I of course concur with my learned friend stuartB's assertion that this is indeed the destined to become Head Boy of our esteemed scholarly establishment pictured in his formative years - naturally, even at this relatively early stage in his studies, it would appear that he still had with him his personal fa g who is standing to his right, and awaiting orders to carry suitcases and the like to a privately hired horse and carriage - the fa g of course in later life went on to become his trusty moat, gate and swimming pool keeper at "Willows Mansions" in the Shiphay regions where he currently resides taking the life peerage title of Lord_of_the Willows........... .......by the way, I note that the aforementioned fa g would appear to be surreptiously attempting to shine up his right shoe on the back of his trouser leg, gamely trying to match the immaculate, sparkling brogues of our future History Man - I say jolly nice to see that although this all clearly took place way back in the mists of time immemorial, such high and exacting standards were being maintained by the young scamp, even back then, in order to impress his future "governor" and employer...... .........I also notice a couple of suspicious-looking street urchins from the neighbouring Secondary Modern School loitering about outside the school gates, clearly bunking off from Metalwork and Tech Drawing, and no doubt looking to relieve his future Lordship of his bespoke cane, finest calfskin leather wallet (which may or may not contain full details and map of the mythical Room 11's whereabouts), buttonhole and comedy headgear - in fact, the urchin on the left appears to be muttering something out of the corner of his mouth to his compatriot in crime which may or may not be something along the lines of "Oi mush, so whos' them there winkers in the 'ats then innit?".............. ........Aude Sapere, boys, Aude Sapere...............

Sad story in this week's Herald Express regarding the death of Nigel Radford at the age of fifty-nine. The paper describes him as a "popular Newton Abbot driving instructor". It sounds as if he was a car enthusiast who worked for many years at Dougie Bougourd's garage in Kingsteignton as well as following the stock car scene.
Nigel was in my year at school. He was a friendly, well-liked character. During the first year he asked, on occasions, to be excused from the often gruelling maths lessons to go to the toilet. The reality is that this probably never happened more than two or three times. It did of course, in the nature of these things, prove sufficient for him to be known as "Tiddles" for the rest of his school days.
