In case anyone should be taken in by my sudden stunning mastership of the ancient latin language I think I should come clean and admit to having spent a little time looking on a site dedicated to translating 'Latin Inscriptions', as found on Google!!
Obvious really....

..........a quick one for any of you TBGS-ites who remember the mighty Das Schnitz (mainly the class entry of Sep 72!!), I have recently been in contact with Stu Gordon - bassist of aforementioned outfit - and he says no plans this year for "The Reunion Tour etc" due to his forthcoming marriage and also Nadis' starting a new business - he promises me he'll shout it from the rooftops when it does happen and no doubt our learned fellow TBGS-ite and local reporter Conrad will also advertise it!.......just thought I'd let ya all know! - Cheers to Chris especially (crispygull)....... I only usually read the main football pages and have just found this great thread and have just spent a couple of hours reading through reminiscing about my time there.
It seems I was in the year above a few of the guys on here (1971-78).I started in 1C with Mr Eeles then went on to 2B with Mr Haskins the following year. If you were 2A1 or 2A2 you did latin, but 2B saw you headed off to the woodwork block with Mr Thirsk. I remember him criticising the coffee table I made for my cse as the shape was not a standard shape and only gave me a grade 2 for it. It`s still used by my kids these days and has lasted longer than anything MFI could come up with. Not that I`m bitter lol.
I remember being on the receiving end of Hoppy`s slipper. It was indeed history which I hated big time and every tme I got less than 10 out of 25 in the history test he`d make the marks up to 10 with the slipper. Still liked the guy though and a good laugh. Anyone remember the speach day at the town hall when the chior were assembled after the break only to find Hoppy had gone walkabouts. Rumour was he was down the pub. With regards to the piano incident, if my memory serves me right we had to sing everything without music for the rest of that morning.
Another incident was in the 6th form block when someone removed the middle of the door handle and the whole class had to climb out of a window. I can`t remember who the teacher was though.
Several of the names ring bells with me but most noticeable was Maurice Cox who was in my year, played for the Gulls for a while and didn`t he go on to play for Huddersfield briefly. Andy Perrett lived in my road and Mark Trevellyn went to Sherwell Valley and I`ve feeling his sister or brother was in my year there.

Andy Perrett lived in my road Didn't you live in Cadewell Crescent? Batty was another one, wasn't he? I am CONSIDERABLY younger than you, but I think we shared a few games of cuppies in the hospital fields, and I remember you lot turning up on our turf at the Green in Cadewell Park Road in matching red and black Man City away kits. I also remember some of us coming round your way swapping those Esso badges and coins.

I was a city supporter and had the red shirt with black stripes. Can`t remember others having the same kit, your memory must be better than mine lol.

I recognise them as well.........Chris Pascoe, Roger Metcalfe, Andygulls, Tom Banks - all good fans of ours - should all be on there as well.....truly extraordinary...... Perhaps Crispygull will point himself out to us. I was going to say that Rog must be easy to spot - but an eleven year old Rog might only have been a couple of inches taller than the teachers and the sixth formers. Wow ! How amazing to see this on here! I couldnt believe it, seeing this thread on here today ... an amazing coincidence for me, as I found myself reminiscing about schooldays with a group of ex TBGS "old boys" after the game yesterday ... among them was our very own Ian Hayman, "superfan" Paul Bastard and regular sponsor Brian McKenna. Those guys were from a slightly earlier era than me! But they were all in the same year at TBGS and of course so many of the names mentioned on here were teachers of theirs as well as of ours. The names of Allen, Hopwood, Hood, Stokes, Coon, Joslin et al ...all cropped up ... and when you think back, to call some of them "slightly eccentric" was probably being quite generous! I think I have managed to identify myself, but still not totally sure ! Either the photo appears a little blurry or its my eyesight! It always amazes me how good some peoples memories are ! For Chris D (Mr W) to remember all the names of the Houses is amazing enough but to come up with the room numers for the teachers is truly staggering! Great memories and I shall continue to read this thread with interest! Chris Pascoe (crispygull) PS Jon, I havent managed to spot big Rog yet either Hi again Jon and Chris ........I have just been casually perusing the April 1973 piccy of the School again (reply 11 back on page 1) - and I believe I get a Big Ronglish-sponsored spotting badge for this - I THINK I have finally managed to identify Big Rog - ie Roger Metcalfe - if you find Mr Joslin in that 1973 piccy (in between Crunch and Tommy Hood) and look at the lad sitting in the front row - on the floor (next to the space) - directly two rows in front of Mr Joslin - I am SURE that is Big Roge - I should know - he sat next to Howard Finch behind me and Mark Phare for a year in room 6 in 1972/3! - its' all a bit confusing as there are several lads from 1B along from him there and some of 1A - as you know Chris, Rog was in our class in 1C along with andygull as well - it looks like us sprog newbies were just crammed in all over the place wherever there was a bit of space for this photo......... .........oh and Jon, one you might recognise (as you mentioned him before regarding Treasure Hunt) and Chris, maybe you remember him as well? - right over on the very far right - second one in from the right on the same picture (reply 11 again - bottom pic of the four sections there), fourth row back - first standing row - is deffo Graham Darke (1B)......... regards Chris Donovan (1C) TBGS 1972-77

Afternoon everyone, just another page on this great site that I've just discovered.... I was at TBGS 1968-1976 1C Mr Rowley 2A2 Mr rowley 3A2 Mr Berry 4L Mr Evans 5L Mr Kerswell 6L1 Mr Stokes 6UBio Mr Hood (twice!) I was deputy head boy in my first year in the upper sixth (Tony Hillman was HB) Got suspended for a week after an "incident " in Hess Bank - still got Michael (Sid) Owen to thank for that one!! Other great memories include Dave O'Dare refusing to bend over for the strap from Mr Roper "You're not hitting me with that thing!", heating up the door handles to the physics labs with a bunsen burner on an extra long length of rubber tubing.. and the school secretary calling Tommy Hood out of our mock A level dissection exam because there was pandemonium at the girls' school because all their earthworms had started coming back to life just as they wre starting to dissect them!! ;D OOOOHHH and those doughnuts that that they used to sell at morning break fom the dining room, crispier and more sugary I have never found!! All for now, ATB,J.

Yes those Esso coins Mexico 70 that would be . I can remember the Mexico 70 coins, the FA Cup coins from 72 and the foil club badges that came between the two. I'd forgotten all about Squelchers until I followed Mr W's link - what incredible stuff can be found on the internet. It was the foil badges that I remember a swapping trip to the Crescent for. We were swapped out around the Green, but were amazed to find swaps of Hull City and Dundee United going begging in the Crescent and takers for our endless supplies of Aberdeens and Oldham Athletics. It seemed like you were on a different planet for what was rare and what wasn't - bizarre as I'm sure they all came from the garage on the Newton Road. Esso weren't smart enough to have a minimum spend required in those days, so we used to head through the hospital fields, through the back of the Golden Butterfly and into the garage for eight black jacks for a penny and a free badge or coin. We'd then repeat the visit to spend a penny regularly through the day. One day, the bloke at the garage looked at us and said "Look, I'll give you a handful of coins if you promise not to keep coming back in every five minutes." We took our coins and disapppeared back to the Green in triumph. Next day we were back with a penny and the bloke was so pleased we'd kept our word that he gave us another fistful of coins as a reward. Happy days! Endless lists of Cadewell footballers c.1970 sent to yeovilgull by PM to avoid boring those who have never lived in Cadewell.

Great stuff! - the Torre Trojans team of 72 was full of mates of mine...Kevin Birch and I were in a band together for a while... Alan Outhwaite (Goof) lived round the corner from me, Steve Foot (Footso) and I were in the same class and Mark Hendrie (Cluckers) had a trial with Wolves as I remember....

But has anyone got the 'Airlines of the World' collection! That sits in the same box somewhere (the attic?) as my 'foil badge' set. It was great; huge colourful button-type discs which were set in the card tray...

Hey Merseygull, interesting to see that I'm not the only one left from that year still supporting the mighty gulls!
Looks like your memory is a lot better than mine as I can't remember all the names of the form teachers although I do remember that we had Mr Bates (what a name for a teacher!!) in the infamous 3B! Incidents were too numerous to mention that year, although kids throwing lightbulbs and powerballs at the weaker teachers as they walked into class, seems to feature quite prominently in my memory!!
As I recall, we were so badly behaved they put us in the classroom outside the headmaster's study so that he could keep an eye on us. That was the peak of my academic career as I somehow managed to come top that year with Mark Hendry. Speech Day was interesting and I can still remember the cries of derision from our classmates as Mark and I went to collect our books.
Didn't take much interest in academia after that as we discovered cider, the concerts at the Town Hall and the girls at Croft Lodge in quick succession!
Still see some of the people you mention around, although the last time I saw Sid Owen was at the Leyton Orient promotion decider game many years ago.

Its just not fair is it that you brainy buggers could mess around all you wanted and still come top of the class we Highweek boys had to work ever so hard just to try to learn to read and write and sure never had time to be naughty. I'm still convinced when me fellow Highweek school for boys members on here starting posting on OUR THREAD, it will turn about a much better thread than this one www.torquayfansforum.com/index.cgi?board=pop&action=display&thread=3101

Think I should start a thread for Exeter School (thought we were snobs but probably weren't) members of this forum, but thought I'd have more luck with my next school, Teignmouth Grammar (we knew we were snobs till amalgamating with the secondary modern) but realised it would probably only be me and Bobbytanz posting on here....
