National League Statement - still needs FA ratification, is the elephant in the room that more clubs in the South wanted to keep playing? Let's hope common sense prevails - something like I outlined below. With no promotion / relegation, how do you stop clubs at our level either dropping out or fielding uncompetitive teams? If one or two genuinely can not continue, they will gladly drop a division to survive - but hopefully most will see staying at step 1 as an incentive to continue. I would expect most of our division to want to carry on. I would not be at all surprised if more than half of the teams in the level below do not want to. But you cannot force teams to carry on and it is not fair to the bigger clubs in the level below to end their season. Imagine how York City feel. That could have been us. In addition, our division is a team short this season so needs at least one team to come up from below. I would say our level continues. If one or two (Dover? King's Lynn?) don't want to, they can stop now and take relegation. Wipe their games from the table and complete the season. If two did drop out, you would only need to relegate one more. At the second level, wipe the tables out but have fresh promotion play-off leagues starting ASAP for those who want to compete. If say ten teams in North and ten in South fancy it, have an 18 game season - two up from each. You'd have to adjust the format depending on number of teams and possibly adjust or remove the North / South divide. No relegation for those who opt out. I don't understand why level 2 cannot just be a voluntary promotion-only competition. Play if you want, don't play if you don't want. The threat of relegation would keep our league honest. Without it, you risk clubs becoming uncompetitive by shedding players to save money - with a distorting effect at the top end of the table. |

Think we have done enough not to finish in the ‘relegation’ spots this time around. Am not expecting anything tonight, so anything is a bonus. I shall relent and pay the £7.50, of course. At least we have got some football to watch. Not that we would if Parmenter got his way with all his noise. I see the King’s Lynn bloke is prepared to play his next two home matches for streaming after counting the cash from Notts County streams, but then intends to pull the plug on their season, too. Compare those early season grants Parmenter and him got to their average gate and how many home games they have played and tell me they are out of pocket. Admittedly no sales at the ground, but they have streaming fees to offset some of that. I’m not convinced by either of them. |
