link - amongst other measures looks like the face mask may come into the equation. Compulsory in shops from 24 July, will it be for football grounds come September? Lots of water to flow under the bridge by then but maybe the idea is to curtail singing / shouting? That'll do the atmosphere a lot of good. The whole point of attending a live match is the singing and shouting. Club's commercial departments hammer on about "the match day experience" in an attempt to wrest more cash from the supporters wallets but it's going to be difficult to push watching football in a mausoleum whilst being gagged, unless they play canned crowd noise on the PA system.

link FA have produced a statement on getting fans back into stadia. They also talk about the imminent return to grassroots football and I wonder where the dividing line between grassroots and stadia football is?

link - draft guidance has now been prepared for spectators to come back into grounds. What is clear is that it is quite a complex document driven by a number of variables such as the local infection rate and how supporters arrive, ingress, egress and movement within the ground. There are even different methods of calculating social distancing so seating and standing plans could conceivably be changed during the season. Spectators will need to sign up to a new code of conduct and think carefully about their own circumstances as to whether they should even be attending games at all. Hence my comments about a televised or streamed alternative for fans in this category and with all our exiles, demand should be pretty good and is what has been undertaken for the play off elimination games this weekend. Social bubbles to be encouraged as that will maximise capacity with pre-booking essential. A very different way of watching football I am afraid, the new normal, at least in the short term.....

They also talk about the imminent return to grassroots football and I wonder where the dividing line between grassroots and stadia football is? link - according to this government guidance, Covid secure premises allow gatherings of more than 30 people So these measures are valid down to a very low level although mitigation will be minimal for very low attended games.

link - interesting article in Devon Live today with Johnson expecting a September 5th start date and training starting a week on Saturday 1 August. Preseason game against Buckland already arranged as well. Confirmation of whether allowing limited spectators for these games is being awaited upon.

link - article in Devon Live have Exeter lined up against TUFC during the pre-season. Rationale being with no spectators and income to keep travel costs to a minimum. Again, clarity is needed on the start date as starting to have an impact on scheduling.....

Preseason game against Buckland already arranged as well. Confirmation of whether allowing limited spectators for these games is being awaited upon. Just listened to this interview in full on the yellow army podcast about these 5 players that have agreed terms and are “99.9%” certain to sign. I was under the impression that the fluid season start date was why no contracts have been issued but it seems that putting in the relevant clauses and caveats in respect of the ongoing Covid issues also needs to come from the National League. Might explain why there have been very few signings as of yet and maybe players such as John Rooney with Stockport are just on pre-contract terms so far? Seems Exeter are on a tight budget and after releasing out of contract players are concentrating on youth with maybe more to leave the club. Expect those play off clubs with owners without deep pockets to have a bigger play off hangover than usual and would not be surprised if one of these ends up at the other end of the table next season.

link - official confirmation that the EFL and Premier League are to start their season on 12th September. Very likely that the National League will also start around this date, will it be the week before on the 5th September as speculated by our manager?

I see the Oval is to have 1000 fans back today out of a 25000 capacity in a match between Surrey and Middlesex in a trail to get fans back into stadia.

I am hearing a few rumours of an October 3rd start which squares the circle of no play before crowds come back in and this not to happen before October. Would mean a long wait for clubs until they can have an income and possibly a delay in training until mid August. May find out tomorrow.....

Johnson talks about the first training session on this Saturday but that is 9 weeks before the first match. Surely too long for a pre-season - extra furlough for the existing players or a more gradual build up?

link - at the beginning of the thread I talked about the season starting with reduced capacity stadia, this news report suggests it could be for the entire season! As the economy has opened up new Covid cases have now stopped falling and while relatively low there is no wriggle room to fully open up sports events unless there is a game changer such as an effective vaccine being made available. Predictions of dozens of clubs going to the wall have so far proved to have been unfounded but think the financial pressure will continue to build and many clubs will be forced to cut their cloth accordingly. The club will need to be on top of their game to organise social bubbles so as to maximise attendance and I expect season tickets to be mentioned soon.....
