Well, it started yesterday with favourites England gaining a comprehensive 104 run win over South Africa. Anyone else watching this competition or going to any of the games? The advent of 20/20 and the India Premier League has completely transformed the format of this game with scores in the 3 or 4 hundreds making for exciting viewing!

To be fair, Pakistan were 166-6 chasing 337 before the rain came in so India had affectively won the game at that point so of course this method would give an impossible target from a smaller amount of overs which would otherwise have favoured Pakistan with less wickets to lose. Calling it a draw would perhaps have been unfair on India at that point.
Having said that I have seen instances where a small rain delay has knocked a couple of overs off for the chasing team and the total to get was a few runs over what the first team got with the full allocation of overs so work that one out!
On the plus side England are in fourth place which is the last spot for the semi but it is looking likely that the top four will now all qualify.

That’ll be wickets coming into play, probably. It’s a better system than run rate. Had a bizarre rain result last weekend in Hampshire CL which we heard benefitted my daughter’s club side, albeit she was playing County and unavailable. Aldershot were something like 82-6 at same point in game that Cove subsequently had reached 80-1 before rain stopped further play. Aldershot won it on run rate according to League’s rules. Stole that win, really. It is an anomaly of cricket that there are different points systems that operate across the game and between Leagues. I’ve long thought it is a barrier to accessibility of the sport. And I love a losing draw dropping anchor when we’re done for, me, so not exactly ‘in touch’ with much of the modern thinking. India won that game, though. And putting it out of reach for Pakistan doesn’t seem like an unfair calculation based on that game.

A perfect illustration of why Ducksworth/Lewis came into being as run rate in that scenario is so wrong. 🤪

Hope Afghanistan can get one before their tournament is over. Not tomorrow, though. Would echo those thoughts and hope the sport continues to develop in that country. Sounded like a cracking display of batting today with Morgan breaking the record for number of sixes in a World Cup innings.

So another slip up from the next cricket world champions. From having SL at 3 for 2, to defeat. No worries, we'll win the upcoming easy games against Aus, NZ, and India, to progress. Champions, my arse. Just found out the result and was shocked after we seemed to be cruising between innings.

Champions, my arse. We only need to win one of those games with our run rate, I’d’ve thought. It ain’t over with that defeat and night just end being exactly what we needed for a kick up the arse. Not looked good chasing a total yet, mind.

I think we will at least beat one of either Australia and NZ, Flo. And I’d like to avoid India in the semi-finals.

The Antipodeans have always had more mental strength than England. A nation of less than 5 mill and another of less than 23 mill, always seem to beat our nation of 55 mill. Why we ever think we can become world champions in any sport is beyond me. NZ are due a loss. Hopefully it’s not at Edgbaston tomorrow.

Thankfully NZ rallied a bit to reach 237. Pakistan favourites, but a slow pitch. 32-1 off 7.

So Pakistan 0 for 1, chasing 228 against Afghanistan. Despite the early wicket, can't see Pakistan not winning, which would be very bad news for us. Pakistan just squeezed home in this. link - looks like Jake Andrews is keeping up to speed in the England must win game will Bairstow posting a century to give us a good start against India. Have I said what a good signing Jake is for the club?
