Ade Azeez theres a blast from the past. Cant honestly remember an awful lot from his short loan a good few seasons back. Fit lad though has been out with a nasty "pre season" injury and hasn't had much football the past six months. The type we need and has some pedigree now at a higher level.
Good chant/song for the Popside...

Gary Warren recalled by Exeter. link - a real pity as he organised our defence well and looked a lot more solid there. Will we get someone in? No Niate now so short on defenders particularly if Wynter and Davis are still out. Leaves Cundy, Lewis and Cameron in central defence with Slough if really necessary but Lewis has covered right back for a bit now. Longridge has done well on the left but will he be here for another month as Davis gets ready to return or will Buse have to fill in as per pre season?

Gary Warren recalled by Exeter. This is a big blow. Have been massively impressed with Warren - he was exactly what we have been crying out for all season. Cundy and Cameron both looked o.k. alongside Warren but have never looked anything like convincing as a pair. Will we try to replace him with another experienced head or cross our fingers and wing it for the rest of the season?

Actually, he wasn't. I wonder who started that rumour. I am very much against all the since 1927 stuff. It was perfect up until 2007 and you could bend a story that the Conference is the new 5th division to keep it going unti 2018, but after our trip to National League South we have to reclaim the 1921-27 years - and while we are at it the 1939-46 years. But even allowing for limiting appearances to since 1927, the calculation making Azeez number 1000 assumed that Leigh Edwards was correct in listing two players called Knapman. He wasn't! That moves Azeez to 999 and Anthony O'Connor to 1000. Is Azeez a good signing? The proof of the pudding will be in the eating and I would imagine it will all come down to fitness / match-fitness. Pete mentions the injury. It is nearly nine months since Azeez played - coming on as sub in the Wembley play-off final. As far as I can tell, Newport has no reserve team. How long will it take him to reach proper match sharpness? We'll have to wait and see. If fit, I remember him as a pacy striker-cum-winger. He will probably have filled out and toughened up since he was at Plainmoor as a kid. I could imagine him in a front two with Reidy similar to the Janneh / Reid combination with both tirelessly running the channels and pulling defences all over the place. Or he could play the wide striker in a 4-3-3 (or variant thereof). Welcome to Plainmoor Ade. Let's hope the return to form and fitness is quick - even if it does mean Newport wanting him back at the end of the season.

Azeez's Newport contract expires at the end of the season, same time as his loan. Expect he has effectively been told to find another club. After eight years his cv is nothing special, just 85 league starts at ten different clubs. At the age of 26 I think his career is behind him unless he finds non-league easier than league football.

It may be because Exeter are looking to re-integrate him into the side or he is carrying a slight knock. However, I wonder if it is because his monthly loan was not renewed due to him being our next permanent signing and in typical Johnson style not being announced until the last minute before the next match?

We have to be open minded about Azeez and give him a chance to get up to speed and impress. A long lay off with a serious injury but he's a fit lad and a player who looks after himself by all accounts. Its just the sort of signing that could be a huge success or, equally, turn out to be a damp squib but with our obvious financial restrictions is just the type we need to take a punt at to improve quality in the squad and progress. Not a prolific scorer by any means but may just be the foil to Reidy's obvious goal scoring attributes. He has the pace and physicality we have been sorely missing. I would hazard a guess that GJ is also looking towards and laying foundations for next seasons much needed squad strengthening. A shame we have lost Garry Warren. Improved the back line with his experience but I feel confident we have enough to see out the season safely and at 35 I would guess he only has another one or two seasons left in him. Possibly another option for GJ if he's released by City. The goal now is surely to finish as strongly as possible and to plan ahead for a stronger challenge next season.

link - Good news that Longridge loan has been extended to the end of the season subject to a recall clause..... Takes the pressure off Davis having to rush back and allows him to get up to speed.

Sensible. Takes the pressure off of getting Liam Davis back too early after a very long lay off and nasty injury at a late stage in his career.

Squad update
GK: MacDonald, Covolan
Defenders: Davis, Wynter, Lewis (L), Cameron, Slough, Cundy (L). Longridge (L)
Midfielders: Hall, Little, Andrews, Buse, Dickson(out on loan for rest of season), Lemonheigh-Evans (L), Kalala, Whitfield, Nemane.
Strikers: Reid, Koszela, Lewington, Azeez.(L)
Injuries are now easing. Wynter is only a week or two away, Davis is a bit longer but both positions are now well covered. Cundy should now be fine for the next game. Buse possibly needs an operation on his ankle problem. We now have competition in midfield and in a few weeks, there will be competition in defence. There are now no excuses not to end the season on a high. Talk of Vincent returning as well when fit.
