What are your best memories,memory of supporting United?
There are many for me but one that comes straight to mind is the away game at Underhill, Barnet in May 2001? I just about got in 2 minutes before kick off.
Gordon Bennett that was a tense game, 3 up at half time but Barnett came back into the game and bearing in mind if we had lost that day it would have meant relegation!!
The final score was 2-3 to United phew but there seems to have been so many games like that over the years involving The Gulls, why us?
One stick out thing that day was a United fan aka nutcase up a tree going mad about our victory, I honestly thought he was going to fall.
The journey home was " jolly ".

After losing 2-1 to wolves at home in 1st leg , listening to the radio from the 2nd leg and being in agony waiting for final whistle. Unbelievable

I remember being at Plainmoor (probably late eighties) on a freezing winter afternoon. We were 0:2 down with 20 minutes to go and we were playing shite football...nothing unusual there then! Suddenly, a thought entered my head that I would be better off having a pint or two in the Devon Dumpling. I didn't see the point in defying my thoughts, because my bits were getting frostbite and falling off (in those days, I was using my willy for it's proper purpose...as opposed to just stirring my tea with it nowadays) and we were never going to score! Walking into the warmth of the Dumpling I ordered a pint. As the barman was serving me he quipped "Nice win for Torquay at Plainmoor today?." I looked at him in a quizzical sort of way and said "No mate...we lost!" "I think you'll find you're wrong mate" he said, pointing to the tv behind me. I turned round to see the football results flashing up on the screen...Torquay had won 3:2! Joe kuffour (I think) had scored 3 in the last 18 minutes or so! Great days!  |

It was May 2006, I believe and yet again we were in a relegation scrap. We played Boston United at home and as it turned out need a point to stay up. I remember the day wet constant drizzle grey sky's. Large crowd 5600 odd Gulls fans allowed into the away end. We drew 0-0 chances both ends nail biting stuff. Steve Woods was outstanding that day and boy did we celebrate at the final whistle, no mid table mediocrity if your involved with United.

Paul Dobson was the only man to do so in the late eighties. March 1987 vs Halifax and August 1987 vs Wrexham. I think the latter one is the famous first game of the season 6-1 victory in Cyril's first game. So is it the Halifax game you remember? |

I was there frankfurt as a lad of twelve years old caught the train with my older sister a a match where she met her husband to be. Yes I remember that occasion pretty well along with all of the pre match aggro walking to the ground on a dull and dismal day. The jubilation of Alan Welsh's winner etc and the coppers trying to keep things calm in the away end. BBC match of the day Torquay Utd v Bury Saturday March 16th 1968. I remember waking up that morning excited as hell and the match didn't disappoint with 10,693 crammed into Plainmoor. Walking to the ground and queing up for entry seeing the BBC paraphernalia and outside broadcast vans cables everywhere. Yes my club was going to feature on MOD!! and I of course watched it all over again, in glorious monochrome at 10.30 that same evening. Cant remember the scorers other than a classy turn and flick from John Smith. Sadly, as I understand it the archive tape hasn't survived and there was no such thing as a home VCR in those days. Shame there is no video record. Torquay United 3 v Aston Villa 1, 21 November 1970 fa cup stood under the Mini stand for this one and although Villa were a div three side it was still an achievement for our little club at the time. Remeber watching the balding Andy Lockhead and his fellow stars being subdued by Dick Edwards and co. Many more great memories and many sad memories including The sherpa van trophy final, the Crewe Great escape, various play offs v Preston Swansea and Scunthorpe with another of my favs of the time Dave Caldwell. Fa cup tie v Coventry City on a winter pictch with not a blade of grass on all sand and mud DC was the star of the show Steve Ogrisovic saving the sky blues blushes. Barnet at Underhill last game decider another great memory. Along with my mate and his son we were about the third and fourth to enter the ground that day many, of course were locked out. Sad but memorable day was final day league one loss at Colchester Utd that sent us back down. Out of 30 odd result permutations only two would see us relegated and we had traveled to celebrate! Even the bloody coach driver got lost on the home journey after taking a short cut through central London adding another hour or two to our misery. |

For obvious reasons, the match that stands out there is Leon Constantine in 2004! I don't think it stated if the hat-tricks were home or away though. Goodness, 15 years out, the old grey matter is worse than I thought! It couldn't have been the Halifax game because I wasn't in the country at the time. |

A month or so ago I was determined not to bother posting on here again after being insulted by some bigoted person called Florida Gull about the rights and wrongs of smoking, however I could not resist putting forward my own greatest memories:
January 1955: 4-0 win against Leeds United, FA Cup Round 3
February 1957: 7-0 win against Swindon Town, hat-trick by Sam Collins
November 1959: 7-1 win against Northampton Town, FA Cup Round 1, brilliant performance by Larry Baxter
April 1961: 1-6 defeat against QPR, when the whole crowd stood and applauded the visitors off the field, and rightly so
August 1962: 3-0 win against Exeter City (away), opportunist hat-trick by Ernie Pym from the left wing
October 1962: 3-3 draw against Mansfield Town, the best match I ever saw at Plainmoor, a League match but end to end like a Cup match
October 1963: 8-3 win against Newport County, Robin Stubbs with five spectacular goals at his very best
November 1963: 5-0 win against Chester, the most dominant performance I have ever seen by United
January 1965: 3-3 draw against Tottenham Hotspur, privileged to see Jimmy Greaves, Alan Gilzean and Cliff Jones
That's about it really, because I left the area in October 1965, but frequently came back to watch matches which, sadly, did not have the same appeal as those listed above. I did try to get to as many games as possible in the late 1980s, however, in order to see Paul Dobson who, in my opinion, is third on the list of the club's greatest strikers and is surpassed only by Robin Stubbs and Sam Collins. I returned to Torbay in 2011 upon my retirement, but I cannot get to many games these days because of a diagnosis of cancer.
However, my greatest memory is of my first visit to Plainmoor in October 1954, when Southend United were beaten 4-1, which included two goals by the great Sam Collins. I believe that there are other members of this site whose first games were earlier than that, and I should be really pleased to hear of their impressions of the first matches which they attended.
And no, Florida Gull, it's not lung cancer, so please carry on with your crusade which does not bother me in the slightest.
