Here's a short clip of an interview with Andy Donnelly I found on Your tube recently. Wow - thanks for that Pete. I scored a penalty past Andy Donnelly at the Sherwell Valley school fete c.1971. Surprised he was featured on a Football's Greatest show. What would that make Mike Mahoney? Would love to see more of the Bury 68 MOTD. I keep scanning the internet, but no sign of it yet. Why would that snippet exist if the rest doesn't?

A rare glimpse at 1.27 minutes of the Bury v TUFC game that was featured on Match of the Day at the time . Only a small snippet of two or three seconds but I understand the original t apes of the match were destroyed. Not according to this: missingepisodes.proboards.com/thread/1425

I sigh every time I go into my study and gaze at the Torquay Team photo of 1954/55 on my wall in the days of Div 3 South.
D. Lewis Smith J V A Jeffreies Smith H G Norman R Shaw S Collins E Webber (manager) H Dobbie D Mills Smith J T
I started going to Plainmoor when I was 7 in 1947. I lived in Windsor Road then and used to go up by myself and stand in the cowshed When my mother died a few years ago I found a Reserve Team Sheet in her belongings, ( which I regret I have mislaid) v. Cheltenham in the Southern league. It cost me the grand sum of 1d. (that's old pennies) One of my favourite memories was actually going to Leeds United for the F A Cup game,(was it 1955?). We lived near Nottingham at the time and my father managed to get some complimentary tickets for the whole family as he was friendly with Eric Webber. I think we were probably the only Torquay supporters there. We obviously weren't expected to do much and took a fair bit of banter from the very friendly Leeds fans. We were absolutely over the moon to come away with a draw. Don Mills had the game of his life. How things have changed!
Now living in N Devon and don't get to many games now. Driving hour and a half each way and 2 hours in the ground getting a bit much for me now. Listening to the commentaries and seeing the results, I don't think I'm missing much. At least we oldies have some happy memories from the past. The young supporters of today only have a slow but steady decline to remember.

Ha that's really odd Jon I too have a vivid memory of a similar event with Andy in goal and receiving shots from all the local kids at a fete/carnival/flower show in Ipplepen where I grew up. I contacted the film maker Ben Donnelly, Andy's grandson and he Suggested the MOD film was part of Andys own personal video. He said to contact Andy through Facebook which I did but didn't get a response I doubt he uses FB very much to be honest. The link to all of the old MOD shows is interesting though posted ten or more years ago - I may try and follow up that lead! Wouldn't it be amazing to view those three goals from that match Vs Bury? One of the highlights of my early years of supporting the Gulls. Just had a quick search this website looks a promising place to find lost film footage. www.focalint.org/footage-and-content-gallery

As somebody said, it brings bloody tears to your eyes looking at those pictures, and it genuinely does. Look at the shower of Shite we entice to the club nowadays, there not fit to tie the laces of these guys! Speaking of laces, no Yellow, Orange or some other poxy colour boots with these guys...sigh

Great stuff - wish we had that degree of success today! Accepting they are not all with us now, it would still be good to see updates on those great players to learn how they are?

....(I think it was taken pre-season before our promotion season and Frank O'Farrell's first season as manager... a question....who is the England international in the squad photo? Yes - 1965 pre-season. John Evans - at Bowls. Roger Tolchard (cricket) and Mike Sangster (tennis) were near contemporary internationals who played for our reserves. Or Tommy Northcott who formed a fearsome left wing with Brian Close for England Schoolboys. Hell Jon I should have said that you were not allowed to enter the competition! It was John Evans I meant (saw him score on his Foorball League debut the winner in a 2-1 home win against top of the table Tranmere Rovers - he scored at the Cowshed End - put through one on one and just drilled it into the left hand corner). Didn't even think of Tommy Northcott (although I think I can forgive myself with Tolchard and Sangster as they weren't in the photo!)

Jon, thanks for that news clip of the highlights at Leeds. I'm afraid I had a damp eye after watching it several times! Unfortunately I was unable to go to the replay. However I did manage to get to the Huddersfield game. I have never been so scared in my life. How on earth they managed to get 22,000 into Plainmoor I will never know. Once again Eric Webber had obliged with complimentary tickets and I was standing in what was then known as the Enclosure. This was the small strip between the main stand and the touchline. For a 15 year old, being squashed in that crowd like a sardine was quite frightening. I don't remember much about the game. I suppose my previous post was a bit negative. (It's very difficult to be positive about the club these days). Of course there have been some memorable moments in what I call "the modern era". I have been to new Wembley twice and to Old Trafford once. Over the years United have been to various finals several times, which is more than most clubs in the lower divisions can say. From my point of view 17th May 2009 (was it only 8 years ago?) was the highlight. I shall remember the Tim Sills goal for the rest of my life. Probably one of the best goals ever scored at Wembley. As Wayne Carlisle took the ball down the right wing, with Sills making forward progress into the penalty area, Carlisle put over an inch perfect cross which Sills met with a powerful header that was a goal all the way. I always feel Carlisle never got the praise that was due for that cross. Do you remember Setanta TV? They tried and failed to establish a football channel on TV and were responsible for broadcasting that game. Luckily I was a subscriber and recorded it on video tape which I still have. I have kept my video player just for that! How sad I hear some say!

Atheringtongull you certainly had the best years of TUFC that's for sure. What wonderful memories you must have of the 1950's and 60's and thanks for sharing those unique moments. Without those first hand accounts the true halcyon days of our club and the game in general would be lost in time. For me it all started in the mid sixties when the game in general had a considerable upsurge in interest after England's world cup success. Little did I know it at the time but that was peak of the clubs success and after Frank O'Farrell left for Leicester City things gradually declined and have as we all know have continued to decline. Its really great to reminisce and by strange coincidence after all of the great old photographs and accounts I have just seen this notice on the clubs official website. Dave Caldwell, Ken Brown and Andy Donnelly are here for the Maidstone game. www.torquayunited.com/hospitality-ken-brown-dave-caldwell-andy-donnelly-joining-us-pre-match/Oddly this news item has been taken off of the website - no explanation.

I saw this posted on FB and thought to myself - Yea those were good times and why not reminisce after all there's bugger all to be excited about these days. Great bit of footage, not the sterile non events we have to tolerate these days, from a an era when we had footballers at the club.
