Nice post, Stewart. Thank you for sharing those memories with us. I agree about Paul Dobson fantastic player. And that's what we have United Fans great memories of a club that is special to us. Long may it continue for other generations, so they can tell the stories we have told, even if it is getting lost on a coach on the way back from a game!! It's happened to me😊

I'm curious to know what bought this thread on. You see when I look back on my memories of TUFC it is when we are up shit creek without a paddle such as when we were facing relegation for the past two seasons or we looked like going of the league, or that time when I was un Torquay museum looking at the club exhibition and the club looking on the verge of extinction or when GI finally got their grubby mitts on the club.

BBC match of the day Torquay Utd v Bury Saturday March 16th 1968. I remember waking up that morning excited as hell and the match didn't disappoint with 10,693 crammed into Plainmoor. Walking to the ground and queing up for entry seeing the BBC paraphernalia and outside broadcast vans cables everywhere. Yes my club was going to feature on MOD!! and I of course watched it all over again, in glorious monochrome at 10.30 that same evening. Cant remember the scorers other than a classy turn and flick from John Smith. Sadly, as I understand it the archive tape hasn't survived and there was no such thing as a home VCR in those days. Shame there is no video record. Match of the Day and I believe the first time a non-Division 1 game was shown on the telly. Scorers were J. Smith, Tony Scott and Bobby Baxter. I was stood on the Popside on the halfway line. Bobby Baxter hit a hopeful ball towards the Babbacombe End from the halfway line, nobody connected and the Bury goalkeeper wanted to let the ball run out, it hit a bump in the pitch and rolled in just inside the post!!! Years later in about 1978 I went to have a look at a flat in Livermead, who should open the door but Bobby Baxter himself. Anybody know if he is still in Torquay? Chelston born and bred I used to do a paper round for Purdies in Hawkins Avenue (No. 1 now closed down). At about No. 43 Tommy Northcott used to live and he was on my round (Hawkins Avenue, Sherwell Valley Road, Highland Road,the Haywain Pub and the bottom shop (Sherwell Valley Road no. 29) which was a hairdressers in those days. Tommy often took the Herald Express off me personally and I used to run home very excited and tell everybody. Seven bob a week and Ron, the landlord at the Haywain always gave me six bob Christmas tip. Tommy´s eldest daghter Julie went to Sherwell Valley with me, at Tommy´s Memorial match at Plainmoor a few years ago I unfortunately missed her by about 10 minutes, she is in the Army and had to get back to Aldershot. |

......maybe time for this again? - memories of the late Popeye (Maurice) Wills, the Mini-Stand, the late Freddie King, Rioch's Rocket (v Hartlepool I think) - some say from inside the centre circle - into the Ellacombe end goal, Pat Kruse's OG, the Crewe 1987 match, beating West Ham 1-0 in the cup to name a few!........

Yes, the mini stand could tell some stories. Stood there watching the fastest own goal, and what a cracker it was! Watford fans wearing black gloves knocking the shit out of the Torquay fans. That drunk nutter of a Torquay fan (ahem) running into the mini stand and taking on the Bradford City fans all on his own! Good days.

I remember being in the middle of a huge "punch-up" with Tottenhem fans in the Mini-Stand (League Cup 1971, lost 4-1). My Dad heard about it, were you involved in that? No Dad, I was getting some chips at the time.
Anybody got some pictures of the Cowshed?

I was stood next to you somewhere frankfurt even though we lost to a side with some huge names that opening goal at the Mini stand end under the floodlights in a packed stand from Bruce Stuckey is still etched clearly on my mind. I took my wife for her one and only visit to Plainmoor it was the game were Par Kruse scored that OG.The keeper was still warming up!! I tried to explain how football worked,3 or 4 times and after that own goal she asked "is that a goal to Torquay " I almost swore!! I think Pat went to Brentford at the end of the season? |

One of the Rochdale team that day, Eugene Martinez, went on to manage a window company in Telford - part of the group I used to work for. He told me that as Bruce prepared to take the free kick, he said "He isn't going to shoot from there" three times. The first time a statement of fact - he is NOT going to shoot from there. The second time bewildered - he must be mad if he thinks he can score from there. The third time utter disbelief - please tell me he isn't going to shoot from there. Then it was like the old 70s cartoons where the cartoon character sees something unbelievable, closes his eyes, rubs them in an exaggerated fashion and opens them again expecting to see something different. But no, that really was the Rochdale keeper picking the ball out of the back of the net. |

 Wow what a set of players to be proud of! The one above of a similar date. Can you name them all though ? Here's a short clip of an interview with Andy Donnelly I found on Your tube recently. A rare glimpse at 1.27 minutes of the Bury v TUFC game that was featured on Match of the Day at the time . Only a small snippet of two or three seconds but I understand the original t ![]() apes of the match were destroyed. |

Eric Burgess, Alan Smith, John Brewster, Doug Clarke, Tony Hellin, Robin Stubbs, John Evans, Reg Wyatt m. Harry Topping, Don Mills, Tommy Northcott, Colin Bettany, Geoff Cox, Terry Adlington, Mike Turner, Alan Kirkman, Ben Murphy, Ernie Pym, Jack Edwards. F. Tommy Spratt, Trevor Wolstenholme, Barry Lewis (apprentice), Edward Rockey (apprentice), Frank O'Farrell, John Benson, Billy Atkinson, Mick Somers. If only Dr Who were true and we could just jump in a police box before watching a game at Plainmoor. Out of that impressive squad (I think it was taken pre-season before our promotion season and Frank O'Farrell's first season as manager) Micky Somers was my favourite. A 3'6" winger who just nipped between the legs! Four years later I was lucky enough to play with John Benson and against Doug Clarke in the Western League, and with Tommy Northcott and Don Mills in the SWL. All great guys. It makes me smile when players of recent years are referred to as 'legends'. This lot are legends and achievers! So.....a question....who is the England international in the squad photo? |

Yes - 1965 pre-season. John Evans - at Bowls. Roger Tolchard (cricket) and Mike Sangster (tennis) were near contemporary internationals who played for our reserves. Or Tommy Northcott who formed a fearsome left wing with Brian Close for England Schoolboys. |
