GI's holding company Toklon Limited has also just filed their accounts for the year to 31/12/16, signed off by Clarke Osborne on 30 June 2017. Interesting mention of TUFC:  So the Group excludes Riviera Stadium Limited and Torquay United AFC Limited from consolidation into the Group accounts using an FRS102 exemption because "the controlling interest in that investment is being held exclusively with a view to subsequent resale within one year of its date of acquisition". Yet within three weeks of declaring to auditors Grant Thornton and to shareholders of Toklon Limited that the intention was to dispose of the football club by December 2017, Clarke Osborne was declaring to shareholders of Torquay United AFC Limited that he was working hard on a five year plan - a plan he had announced that he had started work on well before June 30 - and that he planned relocation to a new purpose-built stadium by 2020. I suppose the kind of idiot so brilliantly parodied on here by Alpine Joe would claim that a football club owner is perfectly entitled to lie to its supporters. TORQUAY United chairman Clarke Osborne today gave his first indication of the probable structure to a new five-year plan for the football club.
After addressing shareholders at the Annual General Meeting, Clarke spoke of his continued desire and determination to bring fresh enthusiasm, fresh facilities and a fresh approach to Torquay United.
Top of the list of priorities are a return to the Football League, enhanced fan experience and engagement, the development of our Academy and a sustainable outlook to the business as a whole.
“From our early involvement with the club, we became acutely aware of the potential for growth at Torquay United, and that potential largely stems from the passion and loyalty of the magnificent Yellow Army,” said Clarke.
“To achieve success, we must build a modern football business, engaging with supporters, partners and club stakeholders. We must embrace change to reach our goals and I appreciate change can sometimes cause controversy.
“Torbay as a community deserves a multi-purpose stadium capable of attracting new entertainment options, as well as becoming a new home for Torquay United, but I reiterate the point we have always made: nothing will happen to Plainmoor until a new stadium has been built and is ready for use by the football club.
“The first area to address in five-year plan will be our core business, which is success on the pitch, and it is our desire to aim for promotion back into the Football League as soon as possible.
“Long-term prosperity and sustainability for the football side of the business will also come from growing our Academy. I have been delighted with the work done so far and we now have a youth system again, with the desire to become a fully-fledged Academy. As part of that aspiration, we plan to open a purpose-built facility for the Academy by 2021.
“In order to enhance the experience of our supporters, we plan relocation to a new purpose-built stadium by 2020, with improved entertainment facilities, catering options and all that comes with a modern stadium.
“We have already worked to improve communication and engagement with supporters and the community, and we must keep making strides forward in this area, utilising surveys, questions for the club series and an open-door policy for everyone holding a connection to Torquay United to voice their opinions and ideas.
“From a financial perspective, we have to build a sustainable business model, working with a local Board of Directors appointed by September 2017 and providing a clear allocation of funding for investment, promotion and development.
“Finally, I would like to again place on record our sincere thanks to Thea Bristow. Without her generosity, loyalty and love for Torquay United are the reason we still have a football club to develop.” |

No idea why people are celebrating unless somebody can reveal who the new prospective buyers/ owners are.
Any guesses?
Its just creating more uncertainty regarding the clubs long and short term future and personally I don't hold out much hope of this being any more favorable ownership than the current lot.
The football club I once knew is no more.
The game and society in general has changed beyond recognition and its simply not the club I once loved.

RED OCTOBER AVERTED !You'd think they'd be preoccupied wouldn't you ? Trying to find someone....anyone...willing to take on the role of TUST leader. But yesterday we were still treated to the spectacle of Militants On Manoeuvres as they busily chatted amongst themselves across the Forums, hoping to create something out of Clarke's consolidation. With Jezza heading off to do what he could to help sell out Britain to the E.U, a few of our local Reds sensed there might be cause for double celebration, fooling themselves that Clarke was about to hoist the white flag and allow their Red Brigade to storm in and claim TUFC. Thankfully, Clarke Osborne has been quick to put them in their place today, and the premature celebrations, admittedly confined almost exclusively to the militant wing of TUST, will have been well and truly dampened. Onward with the 5 year plan !

I can see nothing in that DevonLive article presently from Osborne, although I believe it has already had a few edits.
Not like AJ to jump the gun praising Osborne's words before he's even reported as saying anything. Although we shouldn't be surprised by anything his comedy caricature comes up with, I'm sure he usually waits for the words first? Could be an interesting variant of the "Clarke Osborne Bullshit Bingo" enjoyed by many in the Plainmoor stands and away grounds since the first of many promises and statements came and went without action. I'm not sure "AJ's Osborne Bullshit Prediction Bingo" has got the same legs, tbh.
DT refers to an official statement to follow Chris Rich's "Not as far as I know" and "it's probably just for accounting purposes" remark.

Amazingly, he appears to admit that he lied in Toklon Limited's accounts in order to obtain an exemption from a consolidation requirement to which he would not have been entitled had he told the truth!!! I wonder how that fits in with the ICAEW's code of ethics. |

Rob Just because you're so far behind the curve Rob, it doesn't mean that the rest of us are . Osborne's comments, slapping down the Militant mischief makers, have been available since just after 2.30pm. Osborne explained that, for accounting reasons, GI would need to ‘consolidate’ Riviera’s accounts with other arms of the company if they did not say that it was their intention to dispose of it.
“ I am certainly not looking for the exit-door, principally because we are only part into our plan,” he insisted. “I am not a quitter".

Still shocked at how readily a chartered accountant admits that he has knowingly and deliberately made false statements in a set of audited accounts. I would have expected him to take the lesser rap of deliberately lying to fans of a club he is trying to separate from its ground. He's got so much previous on that score that he would lose nothing by admitting he is up to his old tricks. Just listening to Dave Thomas on the podcast. He says that this rumour comes from accounts for the year ending 31/12/16 - so nearly two years ago. Really? How does he work that one out? These accounts were signed off less than four months ago. How does he think that GI were trying to sell the club "nearly two years ago" when they only bought it ten months ago? Why does he keep repeating that they paid £120,000 for the club when they paid £1? He then goes on about accountancy being a strange world and says that lying about an intention to sell an investment is "an accounting exercise that you have to state on accounts" and is "normal practice". What utter utter utter bollocks. You do not have to claim that an investment is held for short-term resale when it isn't. You should only state that an investment is held for short-term resale when it is. Then all this bollocks about stupid fans expecting a Chairman to be St Francis of Assisi. Really? Is everybody in the world other than St Francis of Assisi a liar? We had a wide range of characters as Chairman from Tony Boyce through to Thea Bristow, but I don't recall any of them being compulsive liars. Dave Phillips was the first I remember shamelessly telling bare-faced lies to fans - and even he told the truth sometimes! |
