Rob
Floridagull will have noticed the automatic Leftist, ‘big State’ loving view that is immediately trotted out by our ‘top down’ loving friends. What a contrast from the USA where the natural reaction would be ‘Just ask those who have to use it’ The customer is still by and large ‘king’ in America, and they’d be the people you’d go to in order to seek your answers.
But in fairness to Rob, he reminds us that there’s no need to confine yourself to the NHS, and that housing would be another, among a whole host of other issues that needn’t be overlooked. All of which goes a fair way to explaining why links to a load of exclusively ‘supply side’ statistics cut little ice with the British voting public at the Brexit Referendum, and will most likely be just as ineffective at this General Election.
So let’s take a look at the side of the equation that is carefully avoided in the host of stats put forward. To a side that is every bit as important, and that the general public are most keenly aware of in their day to day lives …. the ‘Demand’ side of the problem.
Just to make our resident Militants feel more comfortable, here’s a little portion of yesterday’s (Saturday’s) Guardian.
Probably too small to read, but it says that: 'Over the last 2 decades there has been a 46% rise in the number of 20-34 year olds still living with their parents. Over the same period average house prices have tripled from £97,000 to £268,000. In total more than a million extra young men and women now live at home'.
For plenty of others who might not have their 30 year old kids at home, they find that their grandkids are being ‘taught’ in classes of forty or more, and that the younger Sister can’t go to the same local school as her big Sis because it’s ‘full’ and she’ll have to be bussed miles away instead. I'll spoil them some more with yet another Guardian link: link - Guardian - Class Sizes Increase
'More than half a million children are being taught in "super size" classes of more than 30 pupils as over-stretched primary schools struggle to cope with a surge in demand for places, according to a new analysis of Government figures'
But what's the typical response from our Leftist friends ?
‘Oh but freedom of movement, everyone coming in is probably a teacher, so class sizes will fall.. Yeah but freedom of movement, it’s mainly Polish and Romanian builders, so expect lots of extra houses. Freedom of movement, it’s Doctors, yeah mainly Doctors and Nurses that are pouring into the UK’
But even if it were true, none of it is keeping up with the demand side, and so the housing prices go through the roof and the 30 year olds can’t afford to leave home, the schools are bursting at the seams, and at the NHS hospitals and Doctors surgeries the waiting areas are standing room only, and that’s after you’ve waited weeks to be granted a 5 minute appointment.
A couple of days ago, Allison Pearson the Telegraph columnist, reminded us of the ‘Demand’ side stats. That’s right, those Stats that our Socialist friends keep quiet about, and never discuss:
The Left’s refusal to address the ‘demand’ issue fails because they can’t also force the voting public to bury their heads in the sand and dismiss the evidence of their own eyes. And that’s one big reason why Brexit, based on taking back control of 'our borders, our money, and our laws’ proved more popular at the ballot box.
Moan about the pressure on housing or something else if you want to make a negative point about immigration, but the NHS is better for immigration. Just ask those within it.
