Goodness - it gets worse by the week. Tics lost 81-0 away at Teignmouth - a club that was once much junior to our hapless boys from the Rec.

I'll go back to some interesting correspondence in the Torquay Times in early 1880 - actually referring to the Torquay and South Devon club rather than Torquay Athletic. Someone had written in saying it was a disgrace that Torquay could not beat a club from a small town like Teignmouth. Plus ça change.

Oh dear. A victory against Richmond; a narrow defeat against Gloucester; current internationals making appearances at The Rec. It would be easy to be snide about the Tics of today compared to those of 1938. Scribbler would surely turn in his grave.
Forward to 2015 and it made me think about Torbay's second sporting entity behind Torquay United. Brixham RFC? Doing rather nicely at the moment I see.

I thought I was being thick for a minute when I saw no.16s listed in both teams, in 15 aside sport. Obviously an aversion to no.13 for rugby players back then.

Another classic from gullone. Treasurer A.W.Chipman - a relative of J.Chipman who was briefly secretary of TUFC? torquayfansforum.co.uk/thread/11493/torquay-united-coventry-city-27Would Gartrell & co.be our old goalkeeper Bernard? Lured to the darkside by Charlie Pratt? Would R.Batten's son be Ray Batten who wrote the definitive histories of Torquay Athletic and Torquay CC? You should eat Cobley's fish and chips for goodness sake. Sound health advice there. Maybe you'd like the chips so much you'd buy the shop from a reputable estate agent: www.irvinenott.co.uk/i/pdfs/IN012209.pdf

Imagine that gentleman's horror at an 81-0 defeat. I don't know what the score was back in 1880, but points weren't invented until 1886 so it would have been more a case of x goals y tries and z saves to nil. Scoring in both codes was all about kicking the ball between the posts to score a goal. Touching the ball down behind the goal line was originally only a way to obtain a place kick to "try" to score a goal. It then became usual for games that were level on "goals" to be decided by unsuccessful "tries" at goal and if still even by "saves" which I think were teams touching down behind their own goal line to avoid conceding a try. Edit - "saves" may just have been a Devon term. www.rugbyfootballhistory.com/scoring.htm

Obviously the change for a 5pt try is fairly recent and within most of our memories and I guess was brought in to encourage more attacking play, as up until then two penalties would have been worth the same as a converted try.

Tics lost their relegation '10 pointer' at one of only two clubs below them (St Ives) and if St Ives were to win their game in hand, Tics would drop into the relegation zone. The complex points system sees Tics above St Ives with a record of W3 D0 L17 Pts24, while St Ives have W4 D1 L14 Pts22. If that was football, St Ives would be 4pts ahead with a game in hand but there must have been a spell when Tics were harvesting a few bonus points to see them clear for now.
However, there is a good chance that St Ives will overhaul Tics this coming weekend. Torquay are away to 5th place Truro, so on current form, a heavy defeat is most likely, whilst St Ives play Tavistock, who are bottom, 11 points adrift of St Ives.

My goodness - what is going on? Tics pulled it out of the bag, beating 5th place Truro, maybe could say hammering them, 41-27, whilst St Ives, also fell to a shock result, losing 27-22 to Tavistock (who never win). Wellington's home defeat to Okehampton, means Tics move up a place. Next week, the Tics are away to Wadebridge Camels.
