Sorry no match update from me. The lure of Aldershot v Rovers (3 miles away from home for me) didn't quite get me there. Am told I missed a brief but noisy rendition of 'Mansell is a w*nker' after some petulance, but no other noteworthy reports other than 'he's sh*t'. I'll save my trip there for when the Gulls are in town.

I don't think Alpine's revisionist zeal could ever be affected by either too much encouragement or detraction, Barty. You're probably right, Rob. And, as the Dorchester cup game approaches, I'm expecting AJ to turn Lee Mansell into an almost Hardyesque figure. The Manse of Casterbridge perhaps? But possibly not Manse the Obscure.

'It's Mansell in possession, he plays a quick one two with Donald Farfrae before lashing the ball into the Dorchester net to give Rovers the lead'. (Commentary copyright of Radio Casterbridge)
Cap'n Manse and his Pirates.... in person.....playing at a stadium near you.... and all for the ridiculously low price of £13 !!....Kiss me Hardy (oops I think I've got the wrong one there) but what a bargain that is.
It seems that Manse Mania isn't sweeping Hardy Country with unbridled speed. Maybe they're still out in the fields and the news of a legend hitting town hasn't fully done the rounds just yet.
First choice by far has to be the trip to Aldershot for anyone who can make it, but if not then the tie at Dorchester is one to be considered.
Entry prices certainly aren't extortionate, but £5 to park a car ? Is the place infested with little Felix's ? link - Prices for Manse at Dorchester
Above - General view of Dorchester circa 1890. At least the prices are the same.

'I would say this to the large contingent of Manse fans still at Plainmoor.' LOL. A good candidate for most deluded comment of the week month season, if there is such a thing.

You need a few more bob to live in Tolpuddle these days, Uncle Joe. As for Dorchester, someone who is currently sitting next to me once said that because her map said Maiden Castle AM that meant it was probably closed in the afternoons. She's currently watching a recording of today's Escape to the Country and the house-hunters are seeking a new home near to Totnes, which I am sure is one of your favourite spots, what with you being an old hippie, eh?

Barty tees it up and Alpine shoots wide right again ;-) Far from the madding crowd watching Judas Fawley-Manse, it's the Rec at Aldershot that weekend and the only Return of the Native I'll be hoping to see will be in the form of Damon Lathrope and Joe Oastler.

If I remember rightly Judas Fawley-Manse's entire family hanged themselves in the end (and after I finished the book I knew how they felt). Whatever the result, Gulls fans, this is taking things too far. Be like Diggory Venn, the stoical reddleman of Egdon Heath, and take victory and/or defeat with equanimity.

I guess Alpine Joe is attempting to ensure that certain former players should always remain amongst The Well-Beloved. He also appears to be much concerned with Life's Little Ironies. Was the release of Mansell and Nicholson part of a package of Desperate Remedies? And will AJ's idiosyncratic weaving of the tale of two footballers (with a nod towards Dickens) result in the mythologising of them as Two on a Tower? Come what may, AJ appears to be hellbent on playing the role of the defender of the faith when it comes to these former favourites of ours. Maybe, in this way, we should regard him as The Trumpet-Major. But he needs challenging and reining in by The Hand of Ethelberta (or, at the very least, by Rob and myself). But, as ever, there are limits beyond which we should not tread. One bridge too far would surely be Nico of the d'Aggboroughs: A Pure Footballer Faithfully Presented. That would demand a great a leap of the imagination. Alpine Joe - who knows? - may relish the challenge. [Acknowledgements to Wikipedia in helping expand my awareness of Hardy's works.]

NICHOLSON HAS 'DONE BRILLIANTLY'
Hopefully there's some good news on the horizon for our second favourite legend. Kidderminster manager Gary Whild has been thrilled by Nico's outstanding performances for Harriers, and is naturally keen to get him signed up on a contract.
He said: “Kevin has done brilliantly for us and he’s happy at the club.
We’ve had on-going talks with him and we’re hoping to be able to offer him something.
Obviously we have to be mindful of the club’s situation, but that is being looked at by people above me.”
link - Whild -'Get Nico Signed Up'
Whild's views will come as no surprise to Plainmoor regulars who grew accustomed to Nico's stunningly accurate free kicks and shooting, as well as his stylish fullback play. We can only wonder what was going through Kev's mind if he watched the disorganised Gulls defence in televised confusion last weekend.
I'm sure we all hope that Kidderminster place a well deserved contract on the table for Kev to sign very soon.

Indeed. No underhand treacherous swanning off to our nearest League rivals for Kev. Great to hear he has regained the type of form that will hopefully get him a well earned and more permanent deal.

Perhaps this thread should be split into two, along the lines of 'Miscreant Manse' and 'Classy Kev'. Then we could choose which former 'legend' we wish to read about. That would also show whether manse is pulling in the viewers for Kev, or vice versa.

Indeed. No underhand treacherous swanning off to our nearest League rivals for Kev. Apologies but could someone please explain what Mansell has done to have the words treacherous and swanning in the same sentence? I thought he was offered a much reduced one year contract and to protect himself and his family managed to get a two contract on more money than we offered. In my opinion his form had dipped and the wage structure he was on was far too high - a move was shirley best for both parties.

Don't think I mentioned The Mayor of Casterbridge, though I can understand why you've linked those words with him. Duplicitous and cavorting? ;-) Allez Nico.
