Enough of these Seale Hayne rebel-rousers and arch-Lingist apologisers ... I've been wondering what has happened to one of our real Legends, who gave himself to the cause in the glorious days before the Republic?
It seems his action and service on the eastern borders has come to an end but with one snatch of final glory in late April earlier this year -
After a goalless first half, the deadlock was broken in the 57th minute by a spectacular volley from Kevin Hill after a corner was only half cleared.

MANSE HAS ROVERS RACING UP THE LEAGUE
Captain Manse pushed the pedal to the Memorial metal again yesterday, with a heroic goalscoring performance that pushed his revved up Rovers to within one point of the play off places. The accolades surely destined to shower down upon our old friend and Plainmoor all time great, at the end of the season are almost too numerous to list: Promotion winning Captain, Player of The Year, Induction into the Rovers Hall of Fame, and we now can't discount the possibility of Pirates top goalscorer.
Following yesterday's stunning Manse inspired victory over Woking, the Cap'n addressed his adoring public and lifted the lid off the real reasons behind the big improvement in Rovers' much improved form.
Wednesday fans recall with fondness a number of old stories relating to the Jack Charlton days. One of my favourites is of Jack looking in on training. No doubt Maurice Setters or Ian St.John would have been in charge, and Jack called in for 5 minutes before heading off on yet another fishing trip. After watching a succession of hopeless free-kicks in the practice session, Jack tip-toed out onto the muddy pitch in his best shoes and smashed a long distance free kick into the top corner before announcing ' There..is that so bloody hard ?" Sadly I can't find mention of this on-line other than passing reference by Mel Sterland:
“One day he was showing us how to do a free kick. He put the ball on the edge of the box and he bent it in the top corner. He didn’t have football boots on, he had Brogue shoes on. We all just looked at each other in amazement.”

The Manse analogy is surely evident. Fed up with the poor contribution of the so called 'creative' midfielders at Rovers, Cap'n Manse showed them how to do it last week with that incredible inch perfect chipped pass that set up a Rovers goal. This week it appears he's dismissed the usual Rovers free kick expert, appointing himself dead ball specialist and promptly smashed a glorious goal into the top corner.
Had Edwin Starr still been alive, living in Bristol, and holding a Season ticket to the Memorial Stadium, I think we can safely assume that by now he would have declared:
'Darrell Clarke, huh, what is he good for ?....absolutely nothing !'
And if further evidence were needed, Cap'n Manse provides it by revealing that while the clueless management stayed silent and twiddled their fingers, it was the players (I think we know which particular player) who instigated the badly needed discussions and found the solutions to get Rovers season back on track. Poor quality audio, but from about the 1min 30secs mark, the Cap'n reveals that in the aftermath of Rovers low point at Braintree the inept management left it to him to lead the players in sorting out the problems. If only the out of his depth Mr. Knill had had the same good sense last season, and stood back allowing Manse and Kev to implement the necessary solutions for us, when it was clearly evident they were willing to do so.
And in other news......Kev lost.

Accolades are being showered on Manse from all directions now. Manse made the non league paper team of the week (along with Downes) and their report is headlined with "MANSELL PUTS PIRATES IN POLE POSITION TO CHALLENGE" as he no doubt single handedly lifts the club up by the proverbial bootlaces!

Cap'n Manse's sparkling form has catapulted Bristol Rovers up the table, and it seems that a decision has been made that appreciates that even a legend can't perform at his best if he's spent hours couped up on a coach before an important match.
So it's room service tonight for Cap'n Manse as he dials down to Reception for a Club sandwich, someone to polish his boots, and then another call to his mate Kev.
'BRISTOL Rovers are giving themselves the best chance of avoiding an away-day defeat at the hands of a part-time side for the third time this season by investing in an overnight stay ahead of the game at Southport tomorrow.
The club had initially changed their policy on overnight stays following relegation to the Vanarama Conference at the end of last season and decided that any journey that was under four hours could be made on the day of the game
But problems with traffic on the M6 on the way to Altrincham earlier in the season served to hamper preparations ahead of a 2-1 defeat, while the reverse at Braintree Town in September was also preceded by a coach trip of about 175 miles on the morning of the game. That prompted a change of heart among those who control the purse strings and an overnight stay was sanctioned before Rovers claimed their first away success of the season, at Lincoln, last time out.
As a result, another overnight stay has been paid for ahead of tomorrow's game and manager Darrell Clarke, who has always been reticent to use on-the-day-travel as an excuse for any defeat, said: "We did an overnight for our last away game at Lincoln and we will be doing the same again this weekend.
"We'll be training in Bristol on Friday morning and then we'll be making our way up to Southport at lunchtime.
"I think it is the right thing to do again because Southport is a long trip and it is important we do everything possible to make sure our preparation is right. When you have done that there can be no excuses."

(Nico pinpoints the cause of Harriers problems)
Plainmoor legend Kevin Nicholson has done an incredible job in sorting out a leaky Kidderminster defence. Kev has transformed the backline to such an extent that Harrier's have the joint third best defensive record in The Conference. However, Nico isn't quite as young as he was, and can't be expected to rampage up-field and score the teams goals as well with his incredible shooting power.
Therefore asking the forwards to get the occasional effort on target, rather than continue with their wasteful ways, really shouldn't be viewed as asking for too much.
“Overall, there’s no real criticism you can throw at the Harriers’ lads.
“Apart from a very little defensive lapse when their guy made a good turn on the edge of the box and put it in the bottom corner,” said Nicholson.
“But we’ve got to be more clinical. It’s not the first time this season. I’m not talking about just the forwards, I’m talking about everyone. We’ve had too many games where we haven’t scored.
“The reason I came here is to try to get promoted — if you’re going to achieve that you’ve got to be clinical.
“You’ve got to take your opportunities, especially in a game where you have as many chances as that.”
