Our first three games on the road have all been against teams in the top six so this match may tell us so more where we are at. It should be remembered that the home fixture last season against this team was also the catalyst for turning our season around although things won't be easy at a ground which draws higher attendances than ours!
Although Wimbledon started with a good 1-0 home win against Chesterfield their confidence then seemed to be knocked with two big away defeats on the road (6-2 & 5-1 respectively). They have since only managed a 2-2 draw with the daggers at home before again losing twice on the road and then narrowly going down 1-2 to Rochdale on Saturday, greatly impeded by the sending off of Midson for a professional foul after 24 minutes. This is also to our advantage as he will be suspended for this fixture.
Wimbledon are now in their second season in the league but it is fair to say that they haven't found things easy going and 21st place with four points or just one in the last five games suggests it may be a good time to play them. The wombles have had to get in a number of loan signings plus one free agent, Will Antwi who was partly brought in to cover for the injury to Bennett, one of those loanees suggesting some disruption to their ranks only made worse by Midson's suspension.
However, if we are to get anything from this game then the performance levels will need to be significant upped from Saturday with only a few players operating to their potential. I wouldn't be surprised if Ling does make the odd change here or there and will be interesting to see what he goes for. Thompson must be pressing for a start particularly and although Macklin didn't make the bench on Saturday, can't be too far off full fitness for a recall. Easton and Cruise may also be looking to catch Ling's eye.
However, no matter who starts, I don't think the 4-3-3 or similar formation will be jettisoned. If the defensive lapses can be cut out (could theoretically had 4 points from the last two tough away games) then I think there will be opportunities to score, particularly if the midfield can release the wide players into dangerous situations!
