Spoke too soon
Looking at the stats, looks like we're lucky to have only conceded the 1

That was better than I expected
Having said that, there's clearly an issue here - the issue of some people within the club suggesting we're aiming for automatic promotion. There needs to be a re-evaluation of our expectations for the season before everyone ends up disappointed

There needs to be a re-evaluation of our expectations for the season before everyone ends up disappointed Yes great idea let us just say we have not got a chance of promotion this year and we are aiming to finish 14th. That would do a great deal to boost our already small crowds and would make the manager a laughing stock in the football World. Luckily our manager learned his trade through hard graft and experience within the profession, not by playing 'Football Manager' or whatever it is called. This time next week things will be looking very different with 13 points from 8 games and a place in the play off zone

those 43 points needed to secure our league status this season look a long long way off at present.Lingy really has to take a long hard look at this squad and get the issues sorted out before a season of possible promise developes into a fight for our lives

Mid September before anyone's been good enough to beat us so it's been a reasonable start to the season in my view. If, like Rotherham, we were getting the income from 7,400 home gates then I suppose I'd hope to see us a little higher up the table and be able to afford a stronger squad, but with the Plainmoor turnstiles not clicking up to 3000 unless it's a local derby, I have to be realistic. After successive play-off finishes,a declaration that we were not aiming for automatic promotion would have killed season ticket sales stone dead in true Gerald Ratner fashion....guaranteeing a dramatic fall in income and becoming a self fulfilling prophecy. Anyone in the entertainment business will talk up the product, whether the words are based on genuine optimism or not. They didn't tell me just how good the games against Cheltenham and Rochdale were going to be, but then football's unpredictability is part of it's appeal and it's nice to be pleasantly surprised at times. So we'll have to come to terms with having lost one single, solitary match so far in season 2012/13, and then maybe look around for some plus points instead, such as Rene staying on the pitch for the whole 95 minutes and not getting a yellow card

That would do a great deal to boost our already small crowds and would make the manager a laughing stock in the football World. You have to be realistic, though - here and now, we are clearly nowhere near a side capable of competing for promotion of any kind. Ling will look far more foolish if he continues to pedal the automatic promotion line and we finish mid-table, than if he accepts at this stage that we are more likely to finish mid-table. Failing to reach the targets he has publicly given is just asking to be sacked if we're nowhere near them by the end of the season The fact is we clearly aren't good enough right now. We were pretty damn awful today by all accounts, struggling to create anything against a side that conceded 6 last week, which is merely a continuation of last weekend. 6 of the 7 goals we've scored this season came in 2 consecutive matches - since then we've barely looked like scoring 1 win in 6 is pretty poor form. Let's not try and dress that up

Let's not try and dress that upFleetwood away a good point against the newcomers to the league who ran away with the Conference last year and have recruited a number of very high standard players for League 2. They sit 3rd in the table. Port Vale away with 7 players out through injury or suspension (a third of our squad) a creditable 1-1 draw. Port Vale sit 2nd in the table. Rotherham away the big spenders and strong promotion favourites a single goal defeat (and our first defeat of the season after 6 games). They sit 6th in the table. Two cracking home games where we should have finished off Cheltenham (we didn't that's football) and we comfortably beat a quite capable Rochdale team. Argyle was a local derby where they set their stall out for a draw and credit to them through hard battling they got it. All in all a good start. That is not dressing it up it is the reality (and if you don't behave I'll set Jon on you! ). Right off to the Argyle site now as it is far more entertaining, having turned in to blind optimists having been undefeated for 2 games and being delighted at gaining a point at Plainmoor they are back to their manic suicidal depression. Compelling stuff! ;D

Glad to hear a bit of realism their Stefano though seventeenth in he division doesn't look so good but we have had a tough set of fixtures to start the season with. (Three points off the playoff positions!) Two goal less games on the trot is a concern also but if you look back we had a pretty poor start to the campaign last season which was put right on the training pitch and answers were found within the squad, the same will. happen this time around and its only when we get a settled team each week we will start to reap the rewards. Time to get the defensive grafting midfielder back in Lathrope who was key to our recovery last season , It worked well and will do so again, Lingys policy of first being hard to beat and get past is the correct one though just having Rene as a sole target man invites pressure on occasions. Not to disappointed as I expected a tough game on the rebound after they took a hammering last week. We need a win to regain some belief that's all an it will come sooner rather than later I am certain of that.

Wise words petef, on the whole a reasonable start to the season from some tricky fixtures. I am sure that Ling is fully aware of any deficiencies and will be working hard to address them, as he did last year. I fully expect the team to perform better on Tuesday night. If anybody wants to make themselves feel better, head over to the Bristol Rovers forum, their fans are calling for Mcghee's head already!!!!

we have been hard to beat but also find it difficult to win, pretty sure that a couple of wins on the bounce will set us this season, our match performances this season so far though have been a mixed bag, from brilliant, too average and damned poor all in the space of 7 games including leicester. i am in london as it happens on tuesday so going to the wimbledon game, they havent set the world alight either,an opportunity for us to get back on track.Lets hope so,as last year at their place we were diabolically bad

Last time we won away from home was at Barnet in March. Since then our away form has been:
Drew 2-2 at Oxford Lost 2-0 at Wimbledon Lost 3-2 at Hereford Lost 2-0 at Cheltenham Drew 0-0 at Fleetwood Drew 1-1 at Port Vale Lost 1-0 at Rotherham
In fact, since that Barnet match, our form in general has been terrible: P15 W2 D7 L6 (including the Leicester match). And you can't put all that down to playing difficult opposition

horrible but true statistics jamesb, and we rode our luck at the barnet win if i remember, they did everything but score including a missed penalty I wouldn't go that far, though - a win's a win, ultimately. However, what I would point out is that 1 of the 2 wins was the match immediately after that, at home to Accrington. So that makes it 1 win in 14 matches, and 10 points from the last 11 league games. That is, put simply, relegation form - I'm not worried for our league status (although if we lose to Wimbledon...), but the form table doesn't lie I know it's a "negative" line to take, but you can't exactly say it's pessimistic if saying we aren't very good is confirmed by us not being very good
