What exactly did PB say about his visit to Nene Park? If it wasn't anything that indicated that it was to see a particular un-named player for a potential transfer, I would imagine that it is just Bucks being Bucks - a bloody hard grafter that is continually taking-in other matches for the benefit of our club's progression!
It's not REALLY sounding like Bateson - he would have added something derogatory about floating supporters or announced that he has promoted a family member again!!
Seriously though, the statements you have made about the "credit crunch" / impending recession are absolutely what I was thinking when someone speculated on "who we were there to take a look at".
I would imagine that there is "no more room at the inn" for additional players (although maybe CL can work his contacts to bring-in a young player on loan which is heavily subsidised by the parent club!).
That isn't something that bothers me, what is more of a priority for me is that we can get through the season with the squad at the level it is at now.
I wouldn't mind seeing the odd fringe player move-on to other clubs (such as Brough being the obvious one at the moment), but it would be galling to see someone like Sills, Carlisle, Poke, Wroe, Mansell, etc move-on in January.
However, the above about departures is purely speculation, but a harsh reality is around the corner - even for the clubs that have cut their cloth accordingly.
It's a hard thing to get floating fans along in such financially worrying times - so huge credit to everyone that manages to over the next few months.
One oft uttered catchphrase that I did used to hate hearing that Bateson said in the era of perpetual penny-pinching (but now in the age of Plainmoor being a fan-owned club I fully agree with it!) "BRINGALONGAFRIEND"!
I don't want to sound like Bateson here, but it's easy to spend someone else's money, and if it's not coming in from the turnstiles, projected income's not going to be there from a major sponsor; who's expected to stomp up?
