Thought some of the punishments were a bit on the harsh side. 4 years for thinking about rioting?I'm waiting for Aussie to chip in and tell us they should have been hung [ from their cell walls] after being fed their own intestines [ prior to being hanged] Edit. Thanks to Stefano for reminding me to complete my sentences Scary enough, this was quite close to what happened in the good old days! In a variant of being hung, drawn and quartered for high treason, after being drawn on a back of a carriage and then half strangled, the victim had his intestine cut out and thrown on a fire. In some cases, if the executioner was skillful enough, the victim was known to be still alive to watch this happen before being cut up and having his various body parts displayed across London! I say his, because for the sake of public decency any women convicted of high treason were merely burnt at the stake. Anyone else like horrible histories?

He's gradually casting off the shackles of the Buckle era & proving what a good player he can be if used in the right way. Or to use Lambethgull's language: “Workers of the World, Unite. You have nothing to lose but your chains!” Dani has nothing to lose by rejecting the restrictive, outmoded doctrine of orthodox Buckleism & instead fully embracing the brave new age of Lingism. We apologise for this footballing interruption.Your normal riot service will resume shortly

seeing a decent return on your investment is half the battle. Now getting those theiving little scrotes to invest 40 hours hard graft each week which would only see them get a return of a low or moderate wage by London standards is a non starter, they're going to lay in bed all morning & wander down to the dole office once a fortnight. Spot on Alpine Work in London for £5.93 per hour (£4.92 if you're under 21)? You're having a laugh! Of course, many of the shops and businesses looted might otherwise be employing these individuals...were it not for the fact that immigrant labour will do the work for minimum wage or less. What goes around comes around.

Well debated Aussie and nice to see you stuck to your guns. The PC brigade are the new bigots getting outraged when somebody who has the opposite view has the temerity to voice it. Although they are trying to defend the indefensible they will try to somehow make you think it may all be your fault. Well it's not! Lock them up and throw away the key so we can all sleep safely in our beds (and on that point there are many street sleepers who have never stolen a thing in their lives and wouldn't dream of doing so). Goodnight and I'm going back to the football threads again because politics is so naff and last season

I'm not getting outraged, just pointing out the idiocy of yours and Aussie's authoritarian arguments. Your defence of the state and call for its unequal and unsustainable social arrangements to be even more rigorously enforced by incompetent, corrupt and thuggish officers of the law is wrong, unworkable in the long-term and just plain indefensible.

James this is not necessarily aimed at you.
I am getting heartily sick to my stomach reading about these poor underpriviledged little darlings. How can the poor little loves cope with all the social hardships they have to endure? ........................................F#@k OFF!!! If they want to see real hardship, I will personally escort them around the streets of Kolkata, Chennai, Mumbai, Phnom Penh, Bangkok and countless other places on the planet where human beings endure abject poverty and hardship. It makes me want to puke looking at the well fed, opportunity laden scum in the UK. Drop them into Sudder Street in Kolkata and you will see children deformed by their parents to make them better beggars. Women walking around in tattered rags living under a tarp on the side of the road. These people don't know what a Nike is let alone the rioters tool of trade Blackberry. These pieces of shit should be stripped of all the privileges they are getting from the decent people of the UK and told to go to hell if they don't like it. Believe me I can give them directions to places that would tear them apart if they had any soul or decency in them.
There should be no mercy for these scum and the more the liberal apologists accommadate them the worse it will get. It's time for benefit Britain to draw a line in the sand.

Thing is there's nothing you can do about it, Dave. And yours is the least libertarian post on this thread yet ;D

It suddenly dawned on me one day walking thro Delhi. I was stepping over human beings in rags and not even seeing them, I had hit complete compassion fatigue. At that point I knew I had to leave India. It's taken me 6 years to even think about the possibility of going back. Dunno about it being the least libertarian. They should be responsible for their actions and not look for excuses and handouts. Their behaviour affects other peoples lives and so they should be called to account. I believe people should be given a helping hand to own their own lives not handed everything on a plate with no input or effort from them to earn it.

My tongue was firmly in my cheek about the libertarian bit Dave We're not so far apart on this; I don't agree with state handouts either. For me they are a way for the state to gain people's consent and control their behaviour. It should come as no surprise that its recipients prove ungrateful. I am travelling to India myself next year. It won't be until next Autumn unfortunately, as there's no way I can save for the flights before India's summer cranks up in March. Finances will allow only weeks rather than months, but I plan to see Delhi, Kolkatta, Chennai and Mumbai, mostly by train.

Lambie have you been before? Every cliche about India is true. You will love and hate it. It will frustrate and fascinate. It has incredible beauty and yet can be more ugly than you can imagine. It's an emotional rollercoaster and something I am lucky to have experienced.
BTW the trains are erm....interesting. Take a couple of books and plenty of food cos you're going to be cooped up for 30ish hours with your travelling companions who will want to know if you're married, what job you do and if you know their 3rd cousin twice removed who is a Doctor and lives in Bradford. Never, ever be tempted to travel by Bus, it's suicide. Writing this brings back some memories......remind me to tell you about them sometime. ;D
