I presume you liked my Banger Racing thread then I did, Timbo, and - as a true connoisseur - I know you are far happier at Smeatharpe than somewhere like Monaco.....

Surely all those that watched it would agree that it was worth it for THAT race. That was sport at its finest

All antiques TV programmes have gone seriously down hill since my day... Anyone who considers themselves a serious antiques expert cringes at the pathetic attempts to use 'antiques' as an entertainment.
And since when can a programme have 'Antiques' in its title and then show items being sold for a few pence that were made in 1950? That is not an antique mate... it's bloody bric-a-brac!!
Even the Antiques Roadshow, which used to have some semblence of a serious side when it came to the objects shown despite it really being about their value, has stooped to showing fairly modern items because it makes 'good TV' rather than being a factual antiques programme.
As for the experts they now have on there... little knowledge but look good/look eccentric/look sterotypical of what the public perceive a 'dealer' should be. All that history and knowledge they spout? Off-the-cuff? Absolutely not...
David Dickinson? An amiable expert? Read his autobiography and see how he treats the expert scriptwriter who tries to correct his basic mistakes. Lucky he didn't get that bloody weight from the longcase shoved right up.... And yes Dickinson, it's a longcase clock, not a bloody grandfather clock... a longcase. How difficult is it to remember that especially as you're stood in front of one whilst the camera rolls! Does it really take an hour to finally get that in your head?
And how can a television programme be made where a person is expected to make a profit by buying retail (from a dealer) and then selling wholesale (the auction house), considering the dealer will probably have bought the item from an auction in the first place, then added on a profit; whereas the auction sale price then has to have sellers commission and VAT deducted (approximately 22%), on top of which the final purchaser will have bid 20% less than he wishes to actually pay as he has a 20% plus VAT buyers premium to add at the final reckoning. How does that format work? Imagine a programme where the 'competitor' goes into Marsh Toyota and buys a car and then has to make a profit by putting it into South West Car Auctions.
Pathetic television that makes the antiques trade look cheap. I'd like to see one of these programme writers try and make a quick buck in the real antiques world.
