To break it down into simple terms, if you are wealthy you vote NO and if you are poor you vote yes. If you vote YES then your making your m.P. work harder and getting a fairer way of who gets in at No.10, if you vote NO then you will remain as you are and have the rich always trying to stuff the poor. This whole issue frightens the bits out of the House Of Lords incase the public vote YES! We would have more of a say on Europe as well!

Before I vote tonight - can anyone explain in simple terms, what it is all about please? Basically, if the leading candidate doesn't get 50% of the vote, they will look at the people who voted for the candidate with the least votes, who is effectively eliminated and add their next preference to the remaining candidates. this process is repeated until someone has 50% of the vote. Advantages: 1) Retains MPs by area as opposed to being on a party list as in PR. 2) More than half of the voters actually express a preference for you as opposed to a three way split of 36, 33 and 31 where the winning candidate only needs 36 under the existing system! 3) Good at getting rid of anyone but... Disadvantages: 1) Can be bloody confusing - you may end up voting for your third choice candidate. No one really knows how it will pan out in practice. 2) The process may give voters of minority parties such as the BNP more control over which party actually wins - is there potential for local candidates to tweak their election literature to get some second or third choice votes. Warning, if you want to vote for the Mayor, you get a second choice option! ;D

I have a postal vote as I can't be bothered with the trek to the polling station and being accosted outside by complete strangers asking how I voted. I think I must have got the hang of this AV though as I voted No as my first choice and Yes as my second choice!

We can still get automatic promotion under AV. Many Chesterfield fans have us as their second or third preferences.

Oh come-on Stefano, you can't tell us that you don't get at least a bit of pleasure telling some old Tory duffer to mind his own business?!?!
I personally feel that first past the post works for when there are two parties. However, these days there are more parties and surely this gives a far better voice to people (and I'm one person that has never voted for a local MP that has won their seat!). People always say "I'd vote for <party x> but they'd have no chance of getting elected" - maybe this will encourage people to vote for who they genuinely want to see getting elected rather than "voting tactically".
Personally I think that AV is going to be rejected by the electorate today - which is a real shame as it will probably be the last time that we will have the opportunity for electoral reform for a generation.

It has precisely nothing to do with the House of Lords nor Europe, or even personal wealth considering many working class people vote Labour and half of Labour's MPs were on the side of the NO campaign. Not that it matters anyways because AV has been absolutely tanked in the referendum. Shame we got shafted with Gordon Oliver in the Bay though. Just makes my decision to leave when I graduate that bit easier

I can`t believe the naivety!

I can`t believe the naivety! I can't tell whether you're being serious or just having a laugh AV was for elections to the Commons. Furthermore the Lords can only refer bills back to the commons for refining and even then once the bill has gone through the Lords three times that's it, Parliament can pass it against the opposition of the Lords. The Lords have no power other than being a consultatory agency to help curb some of the excesses of the commons. I don't see how the Lords are keeping the poor down nor how they have anything to do with the AV referendum.

I can see the Lords being reformed further in this Parliament with at least some form of elective element. Whether that will be AV, AV+, PR, FPTP or just drawing straws, (well, it happened at Bury yesterday ) I don't know!
