If there's one thing better than a Dumpling steak and ale pie, it's a Dumpling steak and stilton pie. Excellent chips and broccoli too. To cap it off, a Charlie Fairhead impersonator had drained the dregs from the old barrel of Devon Dumpling, so washed down with a nice couple of pints from the new barrel.

Nice though.

Had a beef and redwine type pie at the Drum last night, served with mash and a medley of carrots, peas and cabbage. Very nice too, but doesn't beat the Dumpling. Had a chat with those in charge (at the DD)and Steak Pie WILL NOT be a regular on the menu - despite there being two Steak and Kidneys on (Pie & Pudding).

I had a different sort of pie yesterday at the Marldon Apple Pie fair - very tasty! George Hill was probably the originator of this fair. During the apple season, George used to travel weekly to the market at St Marychurch on his donkey with panniers full of Apples. On the day of the annual fair and sports held at Cary Park, George drove a cart, drawn by two black donkeys wearing harness and reins decorated with plaited straw, round the town carrying a huge Apple pie. The pie, oval in shape and about the size of a kitchen table, ended its journey at the fair and was eaten with cream. The Marldon Apple Pie was a feature of the Annual Fair at St Marychurch until George died around the late C19 century. Marldon too, had its annual show every September from 1888 and the Marldon Apple Pie was a feature of its procession into the field behind a band. Apple Pie day was revived in 1958 as a way of raising funds for the village hall and the main pie is still taken to Jubilee meadow on a cart pulled by a donkey. At the revival in 1958, Mr W H Bridgman then 80 years old recorded his memory of riding in 1888 on one of the 4 donkeys which pulled the cart containing the pie. A cutting from the South Devon Journal in 1863 says that George Hill had an excellent team of eight donkeys harnessed with straw. Source - extracted from programme notes. So looks like this originated very near to Plainmoor and then was the inspiration for Marldon which continues this tradition over 150 years later!

Have they fitted a special turnstile entrance in Launa for all you pie-eaters?

Bloody hell, now we're getting American spelling on here. As an Englishman, as far as I'm concerned there are 2 l's in marvellous. At this rate the g will go missing off the end of dumplings, the way the divots spell it over here. What with Morrison's now calling biscuits 'cookies', I despair at where it will all end!
