Our opening game in the world cup and a game we would be expected to win to get our campaign off to a flying start. It may well be a game that starts very slowly as both teams will want to try and keep things tight, even more so with England due to losing Rio.
I still feel we will win the game with the final score being three one to us.

Signor Capello has really got to make sure there is no complacency, and whilst I know that will be very much on his mind I think there is something in the English psyche that does send us into some games not in the right frame of mind. There have been many examples in recent years where we have really struggled against so-called lesser nations but then performed very well against the big boys.
The USA will certainly be no pushover. Last year in the FIFA Conferations Cup played in South Africa they beat European champions Spain 2-0 in the semi-final and then held a 2-0 lead against Brazil in the final before losing 3-2. They have also qualified for the last five World Cup finals, something that England haven't done, and have previously reached the quarter-finals. Their qualification was also impressive, winning the final CONCACAF group ahead of Mexico.
Many of the USA squad are playing in Europe, including Howard (Everton), Dempsey (Fulham), Spector (West Ham), Bradley (Borussia Moenchengladbach), Cherundolo (Hanover), Onyewu (Milan), and Bocanegra (Rennes) as well as others now playing in the States who have played at top European clubs, notably their outstanding player Landon Donovan, now playing for LA Galaxy but has previously played for Bayer Leverkusen and Bayern Munich. We would after all have also had an LA Galaxy player who has previously played for top European clubs in our squad if he hadn't been injured!
Tough start ..... 2-2.

A shameful defeat 1-0 to USA. Lots of wailing and gnashing of teeth will ensue. Capello sacked to be replace by Buckle who will win the cup for us.
good stuff this Pinot Grigio ;D

I will be starting a matchday thread for our opening game later tonight, If I get lucky it may just stay on topic. This thread is a disappointment, I must say. I did think Dave was going a bit early on the Weymouth thread though.

2-1 to England, after being 1-0 down at half-time. Hairdryer treatment from Capello at HT. Rooney to pick up his first yellow of the tournament.

The yanks arn't the pushover they once might have been. This a Chelsea/Man C rather than a Chelsea/Plymouth type of contest. They can take us and will be up for it. I think it will be a hard fought draw. That would not harm either teams chances of qualifying, tho the importance of topping the group is the difference between meeting the krauts or maybe the aussies next round. I know who i'd rather play

You should walk past the Seppo`s but the Jalepino football is rubbish, the keepers are missjudging it by about five yards on a cross!

You should walk past the Seppo`s but the Jalepino football is rubbish, the keepers are missjudging it by about five yards on a cross! Is it the ball, the goalkeepers or the altitude? Or maybe FIFA are responsible for introducing a new ball for the biggest football tournament in the world, yet again. If FIFA had introduced the "Jabulani" ball to all leagues on Jan 1st, all the players would have got used to it by now. The ball itself is completely round so its flight should be true: not determined by manufacturing factors weaknesses but by atmospherics and technique. It's easy to blame the ball, but the evidence suggests that the ball is the one thing that isn't at fault.

It's easy to blame the ball, but the evidence suggests that the ball is the one thing that isn't at fault. I would absolve the poor old goalkeepers and say it's a combination of "lightness" of the ball and of course the altitude, which as we saw in Mexico the two times the World Cup was held there; does have a remarkable influence over the flight and weighting of the ball. I actually got hold of one of those balls on Saturday at the tournament Anthony was playing in, and I can tell you that even at sea level you can bounce them hard on the ground and they will bounce high above your head. I then executed a few goalkick/corner kick types of strike and found it almost impossible to drop into a pre-conceived area of the pitch with any accuracy. God help the penalty takers too, this ball is far too light and feels more like a beach ball than a proper football that will maximise the skill factor of the game over the lottery factor. Another example of monetry expediency over a real concern for the integrity of the game in my opinion.

I can see this one being a draw, which will not be that bad a result. Many of the "top" teams settle for a point in the opener.
That said it won't stop a huge over reaction from the english press if we do only get a draw.

half time, and first game we are trying to throw it away, what goalkeeping coach taught him that, typical the eyes of the world are watching and green does that,as for heskey, get him off he isnt now or ever was england quality.Capello will go mad at half time for sure.We will turn this around i think, but making it hard on ourselves against a basically poor usa side
