Duck WAS retained at the end of the 1954/55 season, but seems to have disappeared before the start of the 1955/56 season - I don't know why. Well done, Jon. We can usually rely on you for information about friendly fixtures. That's why I try to emphasise "competitive first team football" (but not including the Devon Bowl/St Lukes!). Our discussion about Gordon Duck made me speculate about our descendants in fifty years time unearthing Marc Walton, another Torquay player from the North East who never made a full first team appearance. Admittedly, Walton was only at the club for a few weeks during the early part of 2006. He arrived from Newcastle United, sat on the bench (without playing), made the half-time 50/50 draw on one occasion and promptly disappeared. I saw a Northern League game the following season between West Allotment Celtic and Whitley Bay and – you’ve guessed it – Marc Walton remained on the bench for the entire ninety minutes. You can find him at blythspartansafc.co.uk/new_php/?p=298That got me thinking about other players who’ve been registered without making an appearance in the league, a league-organised cup competition or a FA competition. This means adult players rather than youth trainees/apprentices. I guess there’s several categories: those who came for a fair time and never played; those who were upgraded from youth terms at the age of eighteen but didn’t make the team; those who passed through on a short-term basis (maybe on a contract - or not – but who had more status than a triallist). Can we attempt to make a list? It’s no good referring to the usual resources because that’s just the point – they didn’t play so they’re not listed. So we’re down to memory, old team pictures, programmes and anything else we might have up our sleeves. I’ll start with one from this season – Ben Joyce. Then, a few years back there was James Bittner, the goalkeeper who was Andy Marriott’s understudy throughout 2005/2006 (just as Don Payne in 1972/73 acted as cover for Mick Mahoney without playing). Talking of goalkeepers, am I right in thinking that Derek Bellotti was registered as emergency cover when he moved to Devon following his playing career with Gillingham, Southend, Charlton and Swansea? I'm pretty certain he wasn't on a contract but I'm sure he was registered without ever playing. Oddly his son Ross (now playing for WBB) makes it on to the list of Exeter City first-teamers having played in a emergency as a sixteen-year-old. Now, of course, he publishes Exeter's programme. Referring again to 2005/2006, Nick Skinner was on the bench on a number of occasions without getting a kick. Indeed it's odd to think that, whilst thirty-odd players appeared during that season, Bittner and Skinner – who were around throughout – did not. There were even more players during the disastrous 2006/2007 season – in excess of forty – but two who were registered but didn’t play were Nathan Simpson and John Wheeldon. Different circumstances, timescales, terms and conditions to Bittner and Skinner – and arguably in far more marginal categories – but they too were registered without being sighted. Any more?

There is one that I often think about - (Andreas?) Scholl. Whether he was registered or only training with us I cannot remember. He was an attacking midfielder who appeared on the scene in 1992 having been brought-in by Ivan Golac in his spell as manager. I'm pretty sure that he never made an appearance, I can only remember him being quoted to suggest that he believed that Plainmoor was our training ground!
Can anyone else with a better knowledge than me recall Scholl?
Another player - was Paul Moulden ever registered with us as a player? I remember him training with us when we had Bobby Barnes back in 1995 but again I cannot remember whether he ever made an appearance or signed.

I've no recall of Scholl at all but he has been discussed on this site before. No memory either of Paul Moulden but, checking the books, his career reached a hiatus at the same time as Bobby Barnes in 1995. Triallists we didn't sign is a whole new topic: Shane Tudor, Ryan Clarke (current Oxford 'keeper) and Ryan Harley being relatively recent examples. And on goalkeepers again, we've previously discussed how Bill Glazier and Paddy Roche didn't play first-team football for Torquay United.

The stand-out trialist for me in recent times was perhaps Paul Hayes - who scored away in a friendly at Bodmin or Okehampton, was released and then became a hit at Scunny.
I'm sure we signed Richard Bouton on a 3 month deal but that was torn-up fairly quickly after a dismal friendly performance and he never made a competitive appearance for us.

Haven`t we had player/managers or player/assistant managers who have not played but stood on the side contributing in other ways? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Preece_%28footballer%29Can`t remember him playing a game and it doesn`t state his appearances for us! Did he play a game or two?

Preecey played six times for us in 2001-2 but, and maybe this could be a part of the thread as well, was never on the winning side as a Gull. I'm sure there are a few from the Dave Webb era who would fit in that boat as well.

Cheers for clearing that up I just couldn`t remember him playing, could have missed those games due to financial reasons!

Ex-Reading, went on to Yeading. Outstanding against Newton Abbot and could have made a name for himself in the Devon League at the time. We've previously discussed Johnny Martin (ex-Villa, Colchester, Workington and Southport), included in the 1976/77 team picture, who left without playing a competitive game. And what of Paul Thorpe in the 1984/85 picture? I saw him described as "ex-Torquay United" in countless programmes as he played out his career with clubs around Somerset and Wiltshire (including Yeovil for whom he played against us in the FA Cup). I could never place him as one of our players and have no idea whether he actually signed or how long he was at Plainmoor. Perhaps Webby offered him less than he was getting elsewhere?

I know Soccerbase isn't totally reliable, but I've just had a quick whip through and picked up the players who have sat on the bench in first-class games since 1996/97 without actually making it onto the pitch. Nineteen in total - although Saul Halpin and Ed Palmer will be hoping to be removed from the list shortly.
BEATTIE Ryan (m) 2009/10 BITTNER Jamie (G) 2005/06 BURGESS Lucas (D) 2002/03, 2003/04 CORDEROY Scott (G) 2002/03 FISHER Greg (G) 2009/10 GRIFFITHS Kenny (G) 2001/02 HALPIN Saul (W) 2009/10 JOYCE Ben (A) 2009/10 ORCHARD Steve (D) 2003/04 PALMER Ed (D) 2009/10 SEARLE Mike (G) 2009/10 SIMPSON Nathan (m) 2006/07 SKINNER Nick (D/m) 2004/05, 2005/06 SMALL Mike (m) 2004/05 SMILLIE Duncan (D) 1997/98 STEPHENS Nick (G) 2000/01 TAYLOR Scott (m) 2009/10 WALTON Marc (A) 2005/06 WHEELDON Jon (D) 2006/07

Additional to those already listed on this thread, I've checked old Rothman's yearbooks and found a few more players who appear to have been registered with Torquay United without playing a game. The seasons are for when they were listed although, in a few cases, players may only have been at the club for a matter of weeks.
Will confess to knowing little about some of these (and there's even one who may be a spelling mistake):
Paul Eason 1979/80 Ken Norman ex-Swindon 1980/81 Ashley Griffiths ex-Bristol Rovers 1981/82 Gary Cooper ex-QPR 1985/86 Phil Underhill ex-Southampton 1988/89 Ian Gandy ex-Liverpool 1991/92 Alex Crook 1991/92 Lee Setter 1995/96 Ray McKinnon ex Dundee U and Aberdeen 2000/01 Jason Morris ex-Buckland Athletic 2001-03 Sean Gummer ex-Derby 2001/02 Daniel Hall ex-Coventry 2001/02 John James ex-Topsham 2001/02 Greg Lincoln ex-Arsenal 2001/02 Andrew Ogbodot ex-Bury 2004/05
The “one who got away” was Gary Cooper who went on to play for Maidstone, Peterborough and Birmingham. Greg Lincoln later played in Sweden and had a spell at Northampton before playing senior non-league football in the south east. Alex Crook, one of several ex-trainees on this list, spent several seasons at Taunton Town.
The interesting name is Ray McKinnon who was brought in, I think, by Wes Saunders. A one-time Scotland U21 player who – if memory serves correct – had suffered one injury too many.

I've heard of most of those guys but the last one...Andrew Ogbodot?
That's a name that escapes me completely and, it appears, if it is spelled correctly the whole of the internet (according to Google anyway)
Not a single mention of an Andrew Ogbodot on the web - as per my Dave Gorman guide, that makes him a Googlewhack!

I've heard of most of those guys but the last one...Andrew Ogbodot? Inevitably I followed the Google path with that one as well. No date or place of birth. Perhaps he's a non-existent database gremlin?

I've heard of most of those guys but the last one...Andrew Ogbodot? Draws a complete blank with me too. I'm struggling with Paul Eason too, but all the others ring some kind of a bell. Ian Gandy is a reminder of the potential fate of the reserve goalie - will Danny Potter ever player for us or will he spend 50 games glued to a bench and then move on? Phil Underhill is a reminder that all managers take a punt on youngsters that don't work out. I wonder if the Great Cyril would have taken a shedload of flak for that if forums had been around in those days. Miller and Taylor were rubbish too. Well done Barty. I hope you are cobbling all these bits and pieces into the ultimate list.
