Not a single mention of an Andrew Ogbodot on the web - as per my Dave Gorman guide, that makes him a Googlewhack! Not yet - a googlewhack is something with only ONE (not zero) hits - so he will be when Google gets round to indexing this page... Well, you can now Google "Andrew Ogbodot" and find this page. Ogbodo may be more likely than Ogbodot? Uwa Ogbodo was a player looking for a club in 2004/05: www.basingstoketown.net/stats/player.php?id=150

It's been too long since I read that book Chris - I completely forgot it was one mention!
Does this now mean we have to go and find Andrew Ogdobot lol

Didn't Ray MacKinnon used to play for Nottingham Forrest? If so, I recall that he was one that ROy MacFarland was interested in and we had on trial - but in his first spell he was injured and then I think wasn't fully fit in his second trial. Didn't bode well did it?!
I recall Phil Underhill as a name - but only in the News of the World Football Annual (those small fat books) appearing in our squad list for the coming season.
Was Clay Bond a player that can join the list? He was part of the youth centre of excellence set-up but joined Plymouth. I know there was a compensation deal agreed at the time but I don't think it involved us getting any up-front fee. I can't remember Darren Bastow ever signed any non-contract forms during his trial after his contract at Plymouth was cancelled - that was a waste of talent if ever there was one.

I recall Phil Underhill as a name - but only in the News of the World Football Annual Phil Underhill was the outstanding South Devon League goalkeeper of the time and played for Watts Blake Bearne, Newton Spurs and Torbay Reds.Obviously signed as "emergency cover" for use should the need arise. A number of Newton Abbot "boys" went for trials at Southampton FC in those days (including Robbie Robbins ~ a much better keeper) and that must be where the "former Southampton" tag comes from. They were recommended to the Saints by a guy who I only remember as "Ken" , but who you former Highweek pupils would know as your former sports master.

Different Phil Underhill. This one was a young full back signed by Cyril. He's next to Sean Haslegrave in the 1989/90 team photo in "the" book.

Different Phil Underhill. This one was a young full back signed by Cyril. He's next to Sean Haslegrave in the 1989/90 team photo in "the" book. Phil Underhill was a Bristolian - and checking his date of birth - was probably a trainee at Southampton along with Ian Down and Alan Shearer. From Phil arrived as a 19-year old defender from Torquay United in September 1989, initially on a month loan before signing a deal to the end of that season. An injury-affected campaign followed but he earned a further deal and, with first-choice full back Paul Stevens missing with a knee injury, was handed an extended run in the side. Transfer-listed at the start of the 1991-92 season as City looked to reduce their budget he eventually switched to Gloucester City in October. Went on to play for Forest Green Rovers.Didn't Ray MacKinnon used to play for Nottingham Forrest? If so, I recall that he was one that ROy MacFarland was interested in and we had on trial - but in his first spell he was injured and then I think wasn't fully fit in his second trial. Didn't bode well did it?! Yes, he did play for Forest and there is a Wiki article about Ray McKinnon: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ray_McKinnon_(footballer). This includes: On 15 March 2001 he joined Torquay United on non-contract terms, but left just five days later without appearing in the first team after the re-emergence of a groin injury. He returned to Torquay as a triallist on 30 July 2001, but along with most of the many players Roy McFarland considered during the round of pre-season friendlies was released without earning a contract. The dates - and the fact Wiki mentions he'd previously had a trial at Wolves when Colin Lee was manager - suggests McKinnon may have come to Plainmoor during the brief period Lee was working with Wes Saunders. Our loss was, apparently, Montrose's gain.

Well done Barty. I hope you are cobbling all these bits and pieces into the ultimate list. Can't promise that, Jon, but how about starting on a list of players who were anticipated to make an impact at Plainmoor but never did? There are a few out there who arrived with promise and/or reputation but only played a mere handful of games. Alan Hay, of course, springs to mind. And, considerably earlier, there was Tommy Anderson (ex-Watford, Bournemouth and QPR) who played just nine games in 1959/60 before later playing for a number of clubs in a career which stretched through to 1967/68. I just about remember Brian Faulkes (ex-Reading and Northampton) who played half-a-dozen games in 1969/70 before moving on. Was he simply not very good, injured or a victim of the strength of our squad in those games? Around that time, too, Fred Jardine only made eleven league appearances for us after two hundred for Luton Town. Then those young players who'd played at a higher level but didn't appear in many games for Torquay United: Derek Panter (Manchester City); Bob Warren (Chelsea); Neil Johnson (Spurs). Also, the strange case of Horace Lawrence Langstreth - or "Lol" as he was commonly known - who after playing a few times for Accrington Stanley joined Torquay United in 1956 from Netherfield. Only one league appearance for us but, according to Timbo's programmes, a reserve team regular. There will be more from you I'm sure....several of whom will be more recent than my examples.

I'm sure we signed Richard Bouton on a 3 month deal but that was torn-up fairly quickly after a dismal friendly performance and he never made a competitive appearance for us. I think you're right. Ex-Reading, went on to Yeading. Outstanding against Newton Abbot and could have made a name for himself in the Devon League at the time. We've previously discussed Johnny Martin (ex-Villa, Colchester, Workington and Southport), included in the 1976/77 team picture, who left without playing a competitive game. And what of Paul Thorpe in the 1984/85 picture? I saw him described as "ex-Torquay United" in countless programmes as he played out his career with clubs around Somerset and Wiltshire (including Yeovil for whom he played against us in the FA Cup). I could never place him as one of our players and have no idea whether he actually signed or how long he was at Plainmoor. Perhaps Webby offered him less than he was getting elsewhere? Bouton was fantastic in that Newton Abbot game, scored a 15 minute hat trick

Another old thread. This one concerning players who were fully-contracted to play for Torquay United but never made an appearance in competitive football. Who can we add in the intervening period? Shaun Cooper, perhaps? It's not cut and dried. He's still with us. Isn't he? Jack Rudge the lad on loan from Manchester United. I'm not sure if loanees were meant to be included in this list but are there others of this ilk? Karl Baker, now at Dartmouth, was around for most of the season before the one that's just finished. I assume he was registered to play on Football League forms. Ed Palmer was here for longer. I'm pretty certain he never made a full appearance for the club. Connor Thompson? Rather more marginal - he was young and not here for long but, yes, he sat on the bench and never made the field before being released.
Ray Spear too was on a professional deal for a while.

In this category might be Jim Sinnet although he probably was not a signed player?
I am doing some research into Scottish football and have come across a reference to Jim Sinnet being at Torquay United during the time Cyril Knowles was manager. There is no reference to this in Jim’s career record – or the list on another thread on the forum of players making first team appearances - and I suspect he was perhaps on a very short trial at Plainmoor? If that is true then it is amazing how it came about given Jim’s career – both before and after - was completely in Scotland. Jim Sinnet has legendary status in the Junior (non-league, semi-professional) game in Scotland. He was one of the top forwards in the 1980’s, won a Scottish Junior Cup winners medal as a player, was capped twice for Junior Scotland and then moved into management where he guided Linlithgow Rose to two Junior Cups and on another occasion was a losing finalist. In one season they won six trophies.
If he was on trial at Torquay United then I expect it would have been pre-season 1987/88 when he was also trialling with some Scottish clubs. That would also tie in with the reference to Cyril Knowles.
If anyone can shed any light on this I would be very grateful.

And, from his age as quoted in various articles, Sinnet would have been around twenty-seven at the start of that 1987/88 season. That's reminiscent of us signing Brian Healy from Morecambe some years later. I saw Linlithgow Rose in last year's Junior final but I'm guessing I missed Jim by a few years?

Yes "Mud and Glory" was where I picked up the mention of Cyril Knowles but I have found nothing else. Jim played some lower league football in Scotland but his reputation was made in the Junior game that makes it all the more intriguing as to how he got a trial - if he did of course - at Plainmoor. His date of birth is 5th December 1959 and so he would have been a fairly old trialist. From memory he was manager at Linlithgow Rose from around 2001 to 2008.
Good to hear you were at last year's Junior Cup Final - so was I!
