merse I do not really think you can say that Atheringtongull remarks were really racist.
You live In a City that has so many races living In It, where he lives In North Devon, to see anyone who was a different race he would have to go to Barnstaple(note the correct spelling just for you)hospital, when I have ever been to London It did seem a different land than the one I live In here In Torbay

merse I do not really think you can say that Atheringtongull remarks were really racist. Hey wait a minute....................I said his comments(quoted) were red necked, knee jerk and reactionary. He said: (but failed to quote) that I said he was racist and you said you doubted I had said that. Now you tell the world I said his remarks were racist (also quoted) I have challenged Atheringtongull to quote my calling him a "racist" - to be honest I think I recall saying his comments "could be construed as racist" - that is quite different in my opinion - for instance if I said I thought your offer to stand upside down in a bucket of shite * was quite mad, it wouldn't be the same as calling you mad would it! P.S. There's no need to Dave, honestly!

Now you tell the world I said his remarks were racist (also quoted) You was the wrong word to use, as It did not mean YOU you should know how we speak In Devon by now Merse. Yes I know I said you, but In this case you ,was more anybody and not necessarily you. I hope I had made that clear enough for you. So anyone seeing London, who has spent his life In North Devon could be forgiven for thinking he was In a different country and making such a statement should not even In anyway be construed as racist.

I must apologise for raising this again after a delay of a couple of days, but I have been absolutely appalled at the comments about me made by Merse. I have been unable to reply until today, but I consider "construed as racist" to mean the same as being racist. As for being "a red neck and right wing" those comments deserve the contempt I give them. For your information Merse, my son is courting a charming lady from Kenya who is as black as you can get. She is totally delightful and is accepted as a family member. I'm sorry but this is the last time I shall be posting on this site because of the abuse I have received from Merse. Not long ago questions were asked as to why not many people posted on this site. If all they get is abuse, it's not surprising they keep their opinions to themselves. You'll end up with just banter between Merse and Dave.

Sorry you feel that way atheringtongull, the only thing I would ever clamp down on was personal abuse to any member. I have followed all your posts and the replies Merse has made.
You have been as guilty as Merse and you have made some comments to him, he could have taken offense too. We are all adults here and we will never all agree and If we fall out, we should be big enough to make up and move on.
Merse and I have many battles and fallouts, It happens On forums, but this forum will continue to grow and get quality posts, because Of what It stands for.
Your will always be welcome to read and post On the forum and I would hope that you can see the forum for what It Is and not let one person be the reason, that you would stop using the forum.

I'm sorry but this is the last time I shall be posting on this site because of the abuse I have received from Merse. So sorry that a person who regards my postings as "stupid and inane" suddenly takes umbrage at "abuse"........... abuse received one guesses, but not abuse given eh? I guess we'll have to take your "last time I shall be posting" in the same context as your "won't be at Plainmoor any more whilst Buckle remains in charge"Weasel words I think, weasel words.

I haven't read this thread all the way through and, frankly, I think I'm better off out of it. But this quote made me smile. For your information Merse, my son is courting a charming lady from Kenya who is as black as you can get. I know you don't mean it this way AtheringtonGull, but it makes me think of someone who says: "I'm not racist, I have a black friend." Legal disclaimer: I'm not calling AtheringtonGull racist, nor am I suggesting he's said something racist. This was more trouble than it's probably going to be worth. I really should stop drinking during the day...

Different attitudes, different upbringings and living in different parts of the UK bring varying views on all of the above.
Not sure its of any relevance but let you tell me a little tale about myself and how it changed the way i now perceive this multi-cultural country.
As mentioned else where was brought up in a town in North Yorkshire which is predominantly upper class and white, going to a secondary school with 1500 pupils predominantly white and English. Move to college in Torquay then to Huddersfield to complete a degree. It was a cultural shock but most enjoyable. One of my favorite memories, is walking in to the local boozer at the bottom of the road i live, on my own and enticed by the offer of cheap booze, went in to the bar and ordered a pint. Cricket was on the telly, West Indies vs the Aussies so settled down to watch and cheer every wicket the West Indies took. Then i realized that i was the only white guy in a pub full of West Indians, oh well time to drink up and go i thought! Then a few of the locals sat down with and started to ask me a few questions, they actually knew where i lived and had seen me walk past and stop a few times looking at the adverts outside. Spent all afternoon and evening there, wobbled out was safely escorted home and could never walk past again with out been invited in for a quick beer or two. It was the best most friendly pub i have ever been in and contributed to me getting a working class degree and a lot of debt!
Changed my views forever as they accepted me for who I was, not what i looked like, a valuable lesson in life!
Never judge a book by the cover!
P.S Not wishing to provoke offense, just something I wish to share

Well thank you for sharing It harrogategull, you are so correct that It Is who we are and not what we look like Or what colour we are. Maybe If you have only lived In North Devon, seeing London and all the different races could well be a shock.
Living here In the Bay It Is 99% all white and I do feel I miss out on understanding and even enjoying other cultures.

I'm always amazed that people get so het up about comments on a forum. Surely they realise that the internet isn't "real life"?
I've lost count of the number of times Merse has managed to get someone so upset that they say they'll "never post again"!
You don't have to read many of his posts before it becomes obvious that he just loves winding people up (and he is very good at it!). The many interesting and informative posts are interspersed with comments that are designed just to get a reaction.
This is exactly the sort of poster that any decent forum needs! Merse nearly always get more replies than any other poster simply because he is generally controversial (as well as better informed than most of us!)
Long live Merse I say! The "other" place is much duller for his absence. Their loss is definitely your gain Dave!

Have to agree there Jerry, I sat here as the only member and thought hard how I could make contact with Merse and I thank Capitalgull, for making the contact for me.
I remember times coming home from work, checking .net and then running down stairs to Carol, shouting " guess what that so and so Merse has said about me now"He has got me angry many times, but love him Of hate him he Is what any good forum does in fact need.
I'm thinking Of paying Is BUPA just to make sure I can get plenty more miles out Of him, people will read this forum, because they want to hear what Merse has to say, just need to make sure he does not upset too many ;D ;D
One thing you are spot On with Is that we should not take everything to seriously, Or take It to heart, far better to come up with a better reply and turn things around.

Living here In the Bay It Is 99% all white and I do feel I miss out on understanding and even enjoying other cultures. Most Poles are "white" Dave. Get along to your local "Sklep" * buy a jar of pickled cabbage and some sauerkraut and Wodka................until you've done that you haven't lived mate. I can see you moving to Ilford Park after that! * I'll be off to mine soon................it's the usual North London gaff, open 24/7. I'll pop in for the Times and a doughnut and at this time of the night there'll be some hookers and their pimps, crackheads and other street monkeys hanging around outside. The three big Polish "Out Houses" who man the place during the twilight zone together with their Mastiff always greet me with "Mornin' Uncle"I asked them why "Uncle" and they replied it's a Polish or Jewish term for one who gives or lends money..................and they're right - I always keep a little "shekel"or two for those who need a cuppa tea (one coke or two?) Better to be "onside" than "offside", eh?

OOH, I just love these sorts of spats.
Merse - Times reader eh? mmm, I feel a new thread coming on! But later. My message to you is that; I realise that you are always careful to avoid being personal but that I think you should try to remember that not all contributors are schooled in debate. I ask that you self-moderate if you can and, whilst not addressing your posts to the lowest common denominator, tone down your criticisms of views contrary to yours.
Atherington - I hope you are still coming to this forum. I understand your reaction to being called 'red-necked' even if only by implication. If it's of any comfort I haven't got a view in my head of you - sporting a fine mullet, chewing wheat, forming a lynch-mob whilst playing your banjo. I echo Dave and say you are welcome here.
As for racism, the sooner everyone of every creed and colour admits that they are racist, the better. We will all have encountered (and repeated) racism even if only against them smelly-frogs and the suchlike. Racism does not have to come in colours but it certainly comes easier that way. My best mate was born in India with Indian Sikh heritage and he can say worse things than me! Anyway, once you allow for human tribal psyche; some behaviour, actions and words can be - whilst not excused - explained and then educated. If you're a white caucasian Englishman like me - you should always remember that you probably dislike many more White Anglo-Saxon Protestants than you do any Pakistani-bred Muslim clerics. OK, so you haven't personally met them to dislike them yet but that's your choice. To hate all people of a 'race' is just lazy and idiotic; and human contact soon eradicates it in all but the most mentally imbalanced of people. There's many more Irish jokes written by the English than on any other 'race'.
Here's a quick thought provoker for you - which of these two jokes would you admit on here to finding funny?
1. Mick and Paddy decide to do some partner-swapping and get their wives to agree. After sex Paddy turns to Mick and says 'that was great! I wonder how the wives are getting on?'.
2. Little Leroy is sat having breakfast when his mum asks him to stop picking his nose. Leroy says 'but Mum, all the white kids at school do it!'. 'Yes' his mum replies, 'but not with a bloody spoon!'
One is worse, ethically, than the other, which? (I also find both funny).

A very well written post there midlandstufc and may I say you have a style all Of your own, just like Merse has his own style.
Both jokes are funny but I think most would these days would say the second joke was worse, ethically.I don't know what that says, maybe Its just a sign Of the times.
