From a very reliable source Steve Woods is to sign for Truro City on monday

I hope this is the case. As much as Woods has done well for us I wouldn't want him anywhere near the first team now.
I was speaking to my Aldershot supporting mate (who attends Plainmoor regularly) about Johnson and his face lit up when I mentioned his name. He gave me rave reviews about his time at the Shots and that he moved up the divisions a season to soon.
Basically Johnson sounds Big, Strong and QUICK!!! I know he has had his injury problems but at 23 years sounds like a good signing.

Having just got home and spoke with TUAFC1, I would not disbelieve this story, even more so knowing where this information has come from.
Well it will make one poster happy, but will he find other things to post on ;D ;D

I have heard that Chris Robertson could be allowed to leave after contact offers from other clubs, Could we see them both leaving.

We may well see both going, Robertson was on the list anyway, so it is only a matter of time for him. I firmly believe we will also here the news that Johnson has signed, on a one year contract, but I would stress, we have not heard that yet, only the news on Woods.
Johnson would be another great signing, may have problems with injuries, but he is big and strong, also young and one would think, could over come any problems he may have.
It looks better every day, roll on Saturday.

The thing is with Woods was that (along with Taylor) he should have been replaced the moment we won promotion to League 1. Too short, too slow and too easy to go to ground and end up sat on his arse and out of the game. A hundred per center, I'll agree and respect him for that; but nowhere near the player some folk thought he was. The criteria for judging a really good manager is identifying one who knows when to offload established players and Paul Buckle is certainbly showing he has acquired that side to the job. I would say now that as long as we sign Brett Johnson the negative of a lack of pace in the central defence will have been addressed as will the lack of ball retention from the centre of the midfield with the acquisitions of Thompson, Wroe and Hodges.; whilst Carlisle and Mustapha should bring pace and strength on the flanks to the table. This is obviously why Phillips was deemed surplus to requirements and his offloading shows that Buckle is intent on attaching a lot more importance to retaining possession this season which is where I feel we really fell short of Aldershot's level last time!

I think the lack of pace at the back is a worry and hopefully given what people who know what qualities Brett Johnson possess have said about him, I think he would be an ideal replacement. He also gives us greater flexibility in that he can also give us cover at Left Back, which was certainly an area we were short in last season but less so now given the signing of Lee Hodges.
I think the fact that he appears to have turned down an offer at Brentford to come down here on trial, would suggest that there is perhaps something on the table for him and I would be surprised if he doesnt sign now. The only problem would have been making way for him in the squad, and I must admit my first thoughts were that perhaps we would be seeing Chris Robertson leaving, particularly when he didnt feature at all against Truro, although as others have suggested I think we may still see him leave too?
Just when it all seemed as though things were going quiet at TQ1 - it appears as though there may be some significant changes about to happen.
It will be a sad day if Woodsie leaves, after all he has been a good servant to the club, but should it be the case that he does leave for Truro, it will be in line with all the other exits this summer (bar Zebroski and perhaps Phillips) - a move to a lower standard of football, which would kind of vindicate Buckle's decision to let these players move on. Unfortunately sentimentality cannot come into it as Buckle knows that success this season, or lack of it, could ultimatlely cost him his own job.

I do share your views crispygull that it would be sad If Steve Woods leaves. I know all the views some have on him, but I really have always like him.
He sadly is a little too slow now and the lack of pace at the back has been clear to see for some time now. If he moves on to Truro, I think he will get first team football and his name will be first on the team sheet.

Agree with most of your post Merse, not to sure on your views about Phillips, I think there is much more to the story than that Well Bucks alluded to the fact that Phillips' willingness to adhere to pre-match instructions was not all it should be on more than one occasion, and I do know that Phillips made the boss's life hard when he was left out of the side around the same time of the Rayner fiasco if my memory serves me right. So probably, as in the case of Rayner; once you fall out with the boss you are edging towards the exit door. The difference between last summer and this, is that last year the manager had to act quickly and get in who he knew could do a job and be available, whilst this year he has all last year's deliberations plus a lot longer to mould his squad in the way he would wish it. That is why I felt it was so unfair for those annoying "purists" to be forever on the manager's back last season on .net..................they didn't know the half of it and hadn't a clue how the real world of football operates. Yet time and time again we see managers who come in to do a "firefighting" job get pilloried and compared unfavourably with predecessors who have left a dog's dinner to chuck out, replace and at the same time consolidate the club's position. The club is in that position precisely because those "crowd pleasing" managers put their own kudos above the club's best interests. When a club has gone to the dogs it's damned hard to persuade the players you really want to come on board to do so and you nearly always have to make do with inferior ones. Once the club has consolidated and started to gain a reputation amongst players the job gets easier and I feel we are reaping the benefits of that now. |
