Thanks, Jon, for the additional breakdown of players who have started in Football League games. Expertly done. I'm not entirely sure how to use this figure other than to deduce that 7% of players who have appeared in our first team since 1927 haven't yet - or never will do - start a game for us in the Football League. That must be of interest to somebody.
My approach is probably similar to Jon's. If I'm interested in a particular player (from Torquay United or any other club) I'll be presented with how many games he's played in the Football League (or Premier League) and other first team competitions. That's usually enough for me.
But, from a purely Torquay United historical perspective, I'd want to include games in the Conference (and related competitions) for most purposes.
The upshot is that Jon has now given us information in two formats which is brilliant. The initial question has been answered as has a subsequent one. We could ask more questions as we please even though Jon may not thank us. And, just like the club appearance record - or records - there's something for everyone.

Great breakdown Jon which I think answers a lot of questions raised and probably ensures that this thread will rumble on for a few years yet as the purists anticipate the 1000th football league appearance not counting the 39/40 abortive season!

I'm sure you're right about it rumbling on. Do you think somebody will come along one day and ask how many players have scored for Torquay United?

Ha Lummaton, that's a good question. Poor Jon, he has done a great job on the appearances now your are goading him to find out what players have scored own goals for Torquay. You can't lump them all in the category 'own goals'. Impossible I would say. As a purist, minutes on the pitch in league games does it for me. That would sort out the ones racking up the starting appearances for spending 50 minutes on the pitch game after game.

Do you think somebody will come along one day and ask how many players have scored for Torquay United? Right. Are you sitting comfortably? Karl Hawley became the 541st Torquay United player to score a competitive first team goal for us since the start of the 1927/28 season. Sixteen of those only scored Cup goals (the most interesting being goalkeeper Terry Adlington whilst hobbling around injured on the wing in an FA Cup tie): Adlington, Terry Benefield, Jimmy Burrows, Leslie Docker, John Dougherty, Paul Herd, Stuart Hirons, Paul Hodges, Dave Macklin, Lloyd McArthur, Ted McDonough, Frank Muir, John Pugh, Daral Rhodes, Arthur Stonebridge, Ian Tennant, Jack A further nine only scored "league" goals in the Conference: Christie, Iyseden Dsane, Roscoe Green, Matt Hinshelwood, Paul Mohamed, Kaid Mullings, Darren Phillips, Lee Sturrock, Blair Welsh, Ishmael So that gives us a total of 516 Torquay United players who have scored Football League goals for us. So what about own goals? Well we have benefited from 102 own goals during that period - 94 in the Football League and 8 in cups. But there is a further twist. John Rowland of Newport County is the highest Torquay United goalscorer never to play for Torquay United - he knocked one in for us at Plainmoor in 1961 and another at Somerton Park in 1965. John Crabbe is the only player to have scored for us both as an opponent (a 40-yarder if I recall correctly) playing for Hereford and as a TUFC player. Brian McGlinchey scored for us before he played for us - at Home Park - but never repeated the feat whilst playing for us. So the final answer is that 641 different players have scored for us in all competitions since the start of 1927/28 season and 608 different players have scored for us in the Football League.

Excellent, Jon, excellent. Leaving aside the own goals, that means 54% of players who have appeared for us have scored for us.
Is that more or less than we may have expected? Slightly more I'd say. I would have guessed at 45-50%. But I'd never thought it through before and some people may have anticipated a higher proportion.
No matter how you count it's going to be a long, long wait until the thousandth. I thought we may be able to draw attention to the 500th Torquay United player to score for the club. We better, instead, keep tabs for now on the 550th. One way or the other anyway.
And could our thousandth player - in all circumstances - be our 550th goalscorer? That may be a disappointment if he's a striker.

A very neat bit of work there Jon and feel a bit guilty as had my tongue firmly in my cheek but you have answered every question from a variety of angles and a lot of tff'ers can sleep well this week with that knowledge.

I was wondering whether the ineligible player we fielded against Hereford a few years ago actually counts as an official appearance.

A good point but Jake had signed on loan for us at the time and it was a valid league match but imo was a transgression by the club only which paid for it with that deducted point (in a game we lost!) and therefore should Robinson's appearance should still count....

The game took place. It existed; it's in the records. The league table shows we played forty-six games with the usual tally of matches won, drawn and lost; goals scored and conceded. The only difference is a deduction from the final column.

Well, our 1000th player could be a striker if Azeez plays but only Ball has added to the tally so far so 550 is unlikely. In some respects would be good if he makes his debut at home but whoever it is, he will always be the 1000th player....

Number 860 on Jon's list of our players is Owen Story.
Not a player many people will remember. A brief spell in 2005 when he joined from Team Bath and left for Bath City. Or was it the other way round?
I nearly saw him play on Tuesday evening for Brackley Town at Gresley in the FA Cup. But he remained on the bench as a unused substitute. I guess he's a player that appeared for Torquay United solely because of a not particularly favourable set of circumstances.
