I've now done a proper count from the Centenary History of players making Football League appearances between 1927/28 and 1998/99 and it comes to 750. Add 144 debutants between 1999 and 2007 (an incredible figure), the fifteen who've followed us from the Conference to make their Torquay United FL debuts this season four us plus the four debutants this season (Charnock, Mills, Rendell and Jake Thomson) and the total comes to - as you say - 913. That leaves my additional nineteen who played Conference league matchs for us - but not Football League (a list which currently includes Chris Zebroski) - and you've 932 players who've played some sort of league football for Torquay United since 1927. We may have discussed this before but the Centenary History lists another fifteen who've played some form of competitive football for the club without playing a league game: two from the aborted 1939/40 season (Jones and Tait); three in the FA Cup only (Rodgers in 1931/32, Adrian Tucker and Paul Viner) four in the League Cup (Doug Allder, Alan Barnett, Steve Kidd and Steve Perks), four in the Associate Members Cup (Tony Burt, Richard Gomm, Amir Hashemi and Scot Kaasikmae) and two in the pre-war Div 3(S) Cup (Griffiths and Johnson). Since 1999 I can only find Ashley Keane (in the Associate Members Cup) and Tristan Plummer (in the FA Trophy). If this is correct - and I'm ferreting around other sources of information rather than anything I've produced personally - it may just be that Adam Smith (or Saul Halpin?) becomes the 950th player to appear in competitive football for the club since 1927 (and, no, I've no wish to go anywhere near the Devon Bowl or assorted sundry competitions). But I could be wrong.....and I'm sure someone will shortly tell us so. I can see where you are coming from but the Devon Bowl and assorted sundry competitions (eg Western Counties Floodlit League) were / are first team competitions. I do understand though how difficult it makes it for an historian, but ... does a Manchester United historian say he will not count the FA Cup before the semi-final or the League Cup at all. Same principle really  I hope you haven't been up all night researching Jon or worse still resigned as the TFF Historian in a fit of pique! I was only joking honest. I enjoy the History Section, even though nostalgia just isn't what it used to be! |

Oh yes, it was how many players have played first team games for United since we joined the league? I think we got to a certain point but there were a few anomolies to clear up... but can't recall what!

I'll give you the short answer, because if I give you a more detailed answer people might get bored. I've been in touch with the man who keeps the "official" records and he sent me a list with 943 names on. On checking, I spotted he had jumped the gun by including Danny Potter so that makes 942. The official records don't count our two seasons in the wilderness, so you have to add on another nineteen players which gives us 961. I've spotted two omissions from the official figures. K.Johnson's Division Three South Cup game from 1937/38 has been wrongly attributed to G.Johnson, so he needs adding on. Harry May's only appearance (v Coventry 7/9/29) has been wrongly attributed to Frank Womack. Womack was listed in the Friday's paper at right back with Cann at centre half, but there was a late change with May coming in at centre half and Cann moving to right back. So May needs adding in too, bringing the total to 963. Current pros yet to make their debuts are Potter, Senda, Palmer and Halpin. Why did I say 962 earlier in this thread and am now saying 963? My earlier figure did not include the three 1939/40 League matches, but the "official" figures did and I probably agree that they ought to be, so I've added Jimmy Jones to get to 963. Amazing when you think that Hilly, as well as playing under countless managers, played with over 200 different players in his time with the club. Have I really seen 400 odd players make their debut for us, since Dean Mooney made his - very few of that 400 made quite the same impression on me ;D Who will be no.1000? Maybe the club will mark the occasion? - sadly it wont be young Anthony Merson, he's going to be in the 11 or 12 hundreds - providing of course Chelsea agree to the loan |

You've gone down his list and counted up yourself who was there at the same time as Hilly! Not a scientific approach of course as some may have played only one or two games when Hilly wasn't playing. I think I will now count up how many players I have watched in the first team and will get back to you. Don't wait up though ... I may be some time |

Have I really seen 400 odd players make their debut for us, since Dean Mooney made his - very few of that 400 made quite the same impression on me Remembering Merse isn't a great stats man, may I be the first to calculate it's getting on for 700 in his case. Okay, that's a slight exaggeration I admit.... ;D First one i looked for was the great Steve Morrall as he was the very first player to make an impression on me.......he was so lightening quick. Sadly Mooney was the second  ps.......why the hell wasn't Dave W*bb no. 666  |

Whoops, sorry!
Good to see Simon Garner weighing in at number 700. Somehow I contrived to see his first and last first-class appearances, him playing at Wembley, his testimonial and the five goals he scored for Rovers against Derby.
Or is 700 the number of fags he smoked during his brief time with us?

Quite frightening and I like Merse's comment about the 'Funny Farm'! What was that song 'Trains, Planes, and Bikes, and Things'? Or something like that!! Whoever sang it would feel immediately at home here! Joking aside brilliant historical knowledge and it is one part of the Forum that I enjoy the most. Looking forward to meeting you and everybody else that will be at the Carvery on Saturday. What vegetarian option does Nina do?
