When someone like "Stefano" contributes to a debate on this subject, we ALL need to sit up and take notice; for his career reached serious levels of seniority in his chosen field and he certainly "knows his onions"
No one can pretend that life in any shape or form is the same as those of us of a certain age remember it in our youth and certainly the political picture of this country is totally different than the days when we had a straight choice between socialist policies and right wing policies.
The disappearance of ruling socialism from our everyday lives has resulted in a sterile political theatre in which today's New Labour is to the right of Ted Heath's Conservative Government of the seventies...................and Heath's downfall at the hands of socialism brought about a shift to the right through "Thatcherism" in any case.
Today's Conservatives have been at great pains to present themselves as less of a right wing organisation as an act of expediency in order to be more electable, just as Tony B Liar's New Labour did when seeking to regain power after years in the wilderness.
Stefano's illustrations of the machinations of the politicians and how they determine just how we are policed, are of far more relevance than any airey fairey desire to return to the era of "Dixon Of Dock Green", the "clip round the ear" and "Laura Norder" whoever she was.
Politicians are career politicians, as are senior civil servants and their Permananet Under Secretariariat. They make policies that will enhance their positions and ensure that "the figures" bring an air of justification to their policies.....................never forget that they are there for THEM not there for YOU
Just like the professional soldier, the postman and the bus driver; the police officer is merely a tool in their hand and a puppet within their grasp.
Just as the soldier didn't seek a confrontation of Saddam's Weapons of Mass Destruction, the postman elect for just one delivery a day, the bus driver to drive a skeleton service during unsocial hours; neither did the Bobby want to spend eight hours of his time in the office every time he makes an arrest.
It's the crap that WE have elected to represent us and the buck really stops with us ~ the electorate. Until (as a nation) we learn to mature in our political view, to be far more demanding of our elected representatives, examine their manifestos and agendas; scrutinise more carefully their actions; we shall continue to be short serviced and made to pay service to those that should be serving us!
