capitalgull, I did look out for you, I was in the stand all night, but I did meet one of our members. Well I did not know he was until I got home and he sent me a PM.
So nice to meet you ollie mate, sorry I did not say a lot , but then we were watching old grumpy chops, shouting " In the field, you can't park there, in the field" I do apologize if that was any of our members father ;D ;D

Got to the ground way too early but had an ice-cold coke in the clubhouse and saw Colin Lee and the youth guys meeting two representatives of Newton and Dawlish, who I believe have a combined board. Maybe the Gulls are going to use Coach Road for youth team games this season? Would be good to see them linking up with local clubs as has been said previously in other threads.

That would be good if the youth team could play their games at Coach RD. Ant had a meeting there before the game, not sure if was to do with that, I'll ask him tomorrow. Yes we will meet one day soon and I promise to look up to you, not that I will have a choice ;D ;D

Benyon's willingness to drop deep and pick up the ball was making things happen all over the pitch. Was by far the best player on the pitch tonight. Good to hear Benyon impressed so many, but then he had his champions last season yet I thought he lacked the basic upper body strength and physique to enable him to hold his own as a striker in a full blown pro league; so (although not at the game) I would humbly suggest no-one gets blinded by the light of playing against amateur County League footballers who are a million miles from the big nasty BSP opposition waiting just around the corner! Elliot was developed by Bristol CITY by the way, NOT Rovers!

Looks like TUFC and NAFC are getting involved in some sort of partnership too - they met before the game in the clubhouse and the youth team are playing Bristol Rovers Youth at Coach Road tomorrow afternoon. (And thanks Merse for the directions...once I got past Forde Park, I knew exactly where I was going!!!!) It has always struck me that the sensible way forward would be to establish links with clubs like Dawlish (where we have done it before) Newton Abbot, Buckland and Stoke Gabriel who have decent little set ups without paying silly money out to players who could possibly feed into the TU system. The Gulls have things like treatment and re-hab facilities that could be of reciprocal benefit in exchange also as well as players who intend taking their coaching badges soon who could be helpful to those clubs in a mutual sort of way. After all, it worked well with NA Spurs all those years ago, so why not? Phew, when I woke up to find a missed call from you on my mobile this morning I thought you really might be in the Butchers Arms or the Jolly Sailor cursing me..............to think I began by directing you to Buckland's ground - not far away but the wrong side of the lake!

I see the youth Team game against Rovers this afternoon is now being played at Coach Road. I Think this will be great for the kids, and another step forward in bringing the football community together

No one can argue that last night , he was not up against, big strong and tough defenders. What was still impress however, was his movement, work rate and his finishing. He has always known where the goal is and like any smaller player, he will learn how to deal with bigger defenders, once he is able to do that, you can be sure he will score , more than he will miss.

On the subject of Benyon his upper body strength looked to have improved considerably from the end of last season. He wasn’t afraid to challenge the `keeper or stand his own against defenders that were both taller and wider then him. As Merse says last nights opposition were a completely different standard to some of the bruits that Benyon will have to face in the BSP, but the initial signs look promising. That said, Green impressed me and I wouldn’t be at all surprised if Buckle plays Sills and Green as his first choice strike force for the start of the season.

Ollie if I was the start of your enjoyable night, well thanks, I mean you could not mean old grumpy could you?
I have to agree that I think Sills and Green, will be the starting strikers, but Benyon, will have no problems coming off the bench and doing a god Job.
He did challenge well yesterday, will the keeper and defenders, he is certainly not afraid to get stuck in. Merse dear of him, just seems not to like the little ones, but if had witnessed Benyon's display last night, he may well have had to concede that big is not always best. ;D ;D

I meant that grumpy man shouting at every one Dave Just joking - its always good to put a face to a name. As a couple of people were saying yesterday at the ground and online, I cant see us missing Philips. Green has the strength (and hopefully the work rate) of Phillips but with the addition of pace. I just hope Benyon is able to put in a similar performance to last night regularly against better opposition.

Its ok ollie, I'll get over it ;D ;D Don't think Green will every have the strength and power that Phillips has, but I do believe he will offer far more. Not just his pace, but it was clear to see, he has the beating of players in front of him. He is also not afraid to shoot at goal, how many players have we seen, who for some reason, just seem scared to have a go. It s the age old thing, if you don't shoot, you don't score, I would rather a player shoot 10 time and miss 9 of them, than not try and have a shot. I really hope he stays fit, I do believe he will be the key to unlock defenses and will be able to provide Sills, with the type of service, a player good in the air, would want.

I think Green should be a better finnisher than Phillips as well.I wouldnt mind seeing Green and Benyon given another chance to start together again aswell

For goodness sake will people please stop going overboard about Benyon. 2 of the finishes (the first 2) were anything but class although the 3rd And 4th were well taken. This is Newton Abbot we are talking about and there was no pressure and little by the way of physical challenge. This was a pre season practice run out that demonstrated that most of the team are shaping up nicely for this stage of the season ...end of. Don't get me wrong..nothing would please me more than to see the young man have a great season. The style of play that it looks like we may employ and the potential for increased quality of the central midfield and wing play may well help him. If we go with only 4 forwards then he will have to contribute at some time as injuries and suspensions during the season should see him being involved. The evidence about his class however will be seen when the big dance starts and not before!

Some very fair points Andy, its preseason, expectations are high and yes, we should not forget who we played. I think we all know, the real tests are ahead, but when there is so little news, nothing really happening, its easy to get carried away.
We will see how well he does on Saturday, maybe we can sing his praises all over again, maybe we won't, I have a feeling we may see another good performance from him.

I'd just like to point out one down side of Benyon's performance on Tuesday night. Having a slash by the corner flag after only just coming out of the dressing rooms in full view of a couple of hundred supporters some of which were very young ! I'm sure he wouldn't have done at a BSP ground......so why do it at Newton.
End of whinge
