One Of the worst thing about being In the BSP, Is having to qualify just to be In the first round proper Of the FA Cup.Even so we still have the opportunity to get to the first round and then the chance to progress and If we were lucky get a top fight team.
We all know the big rewards In terms Of finance such a big game could bring, but lets not get too far ahead, first we need to beat Chipstead.
On paper It should be no contest, but this Is still the FA cup and we have slipped up before playing much lesser teams.So we must approach the game knowing we will have to win It and not just expect a walk In the park.
No disrespect to martin Rice, but I do feel better knowing we will have Bevan In goal, we have not lost In the five games he has played In and I think with him in goal,plus the way we have been playing, that we could do well In this years FA Cup.

You are very right in the financial rewards Dave as I'm sure our runs in the FA Cup and FA trophy last year directly contributed to being able to significantly strengthen the squad this year. With our poor start and lower crowds a good run this year could even more determine what happens in the transfer window and closed season!
The downside of a cup run is the impact it could have on the players later in the season as well as the match congestion with potentially having to play three matches in one week. Also I don't think that the play offs is compatible with the trophy final as I think we certainly fell between two stools last May.
This is a tricky match in that we will be expected to win and we must show the professionalism in similar matches last year such as Wimbledon and Bashley. The question is, do we stick with the same eleven as last week or do we take the opportunity to rest a few players for the hard graft later in the season? For example, Hargreaves has started every match and recently had to have pain killing injections in his back to play. Mansell also has started every match and with the lack of cover at this position, an injury to him could disproportionately hurt us.
Obviously it is up to Buckle to make an assessment of his players and pick a side accordingly but my stitch in time saves nine side would be:
Bevan
Robertson, Ellis, Woods, Nicholson
Carlisle, Wroe, Thompson, Dsane,
Benyon, Sills

rjdgull, I sure would not want any cup run, to affect our chances Of getting promotion, but I do think things are different this season.
We do have much more depth to our squad and I firmly believe, that If we use all the players for the correct games, then a good cup run should have very little impact On the players Or our promotion hopes,

It's a good point about Hargreaves. Our improved form started when he was moved back into midfield with Mansell, and now Wroe has found his feet at our club, Hargreaves and Wroe have formed a formidable central midfield partnership. The trouble is that there is an obvious reluctance now to rest Hargreaves who is very much the driving force of the team in my opinion, at the ripe old age of 36. I do worry that we may be too reliant on Hargreaves and I would be interested to see a different central midfield partnership not including him, or to rest him during a match. I think we need to find out sooner rather than later what impact on the team this will give.
I will be going to this match but do you think the crowd will be over 1,000 ? I'll go for about 1,200. I seem to remember last season's gate was poor for the equivalent match and that was when we were getting much higher crowds in general.

swangull, can't disagree that we do need to sort out an alternative midfield partnership, as apart from his age, we have injuries and suspensions, that could keep Hargreaves out.The question Is who? I would think Mansell would be the man do do the job, but then we would have the right back problem again.
Don't think Thompson has the same Impact as Hargreaves, so not sure he would be my choice.
IF we get 1400 I think we will be lucky, I will be going and I hope that as the price has been reduced, It might just get a few more to consider going.

looks a good team to put Out Rob and for the reasons you gave.We can always make sure we have a good bench, just In case the worst was to happen and we found ourselves behind.

As many have been blaming the relatively high prices for their non-attendance I would hope that they would make the effort to get along and support their team on Saturday at the reduced rate! They may be in for a surprise as they will find that we are now a very good side playing some excellent football (better than the start of last season when the gates were vastly higher than now). Surely there can be no excuse for "supporters" living locally not to go? The standard of the opposition is irrelevant, you are their to support Torquay not the opposition! We haven't had a home game for 2 weeks so plenty of time to save up for this one! Over 2000 please or I shall be very disappointed in you all!  |

Dave, at least we're fortunate that BSP clubs now get a bye direct to the 4th qualifying round. This has only been the case for about 10 years. Until then a club had to reach the 1st round proper one year in order to get a 4th QR exemption the following year (although winning the FA Trophy sometimes earned a 1st round proper slot).
Otherwise it was a case of starting in the 1st QR with the prospect of 2nd replays, etc. How about Yeovil's 79/80 cup run?

The other thing that has changed is that the Extra Preliminary and Preliminary rounds are now so huge that the 4th QR is effectively the sixth qualifying stage. Clubs of Chipstead's ranking enter at the second of these so it's hardly surprising that there's only one team (Leiston) left from a lower level than Chipstead.
So the most sympathetic of draws for us that, once again, doesn't involve a trip to another BSP club (aside from Weymouth in the shield).
I'd go for a minimum of team changes but Adams for Hargreaves seems the most obvious to me.

Thanks for the information bartondowns, I must confess I really no very little about how It all works, now we are not a league team.
I think Bucks will rest a few players, unless he starts with a strong team, gets three gaols In front and then make changes, to give the likes Of Hargreaves a rest.

I think we will start with our strongest team. A good cup run is imperative in light of our home gates at present. We all know how many times a weakened side against so-called lesser opponents has come back to bite you on the arse - man u & exeter for one! If by half-time we are in a commanding position then make the changes! oops!........Iv'e just read your last post dave.  Great minds think alike though! |

Few changes for me. Not wholesale but it is ideal time to get the peripherla players out.
So I would like to see Adams (not seen him have a good game, so perhaps I'm his Albatross round his neck?) in for Greavsie. Brough (yes, Brough) in for Woods.
Also like Stevens and Carayol on from the start (Stevens on right obviously).
Put Ellis in as CB and give Robertson another go at RB.
Half-time and 2 nil up on can come Thompson for Wroe and Dane for Sillsy or Elliot. Then the ex-Argyle chap (can't believe I can't remember his name at the moment!!)(oh, yes!), Hodges for anyone he likes (he's my new Derek Dawkins type, but not so much a hero).

Looking forward to the game, I can't see anything other than a good win for the boys. I hope we get over 2000 and we should as the price has been reduced and there has be no other game at home for two weeks. I think we will win by three goals to one, I expect a lively game with plenty Of incidents.

Due to Robertsons Injury...
Bevan, Mansell, Ellis, Woods, Hodges, Stevens, Wroe, Thompson, Carayol, Dsane, Benyon.
I think he will keep Mansell in at right back, but if not then due to lack of cover maybe Thompson goes back to right back, as that was where he was successful at Crawley [correct me if I'm wrong..] and then Adams comes into midfield.
