Well firstly good to see old JimD on the ball for 2009 as he was so fast to change the forum calendar.
Well its Friday night now and I'm sure the move is not going to please all the fans, still we now have to just get on with it and make sure we win the game. I would not be to happy now if after having to have the game moved to keep Wrexham happy, they went and won it.
We will see Sills and Green back up front and Dsane out on the left wing, young Plummer may well get a place on the bench. As Bevan seemed injured we could see Poke return in goal, but I would expect Bevan to recover by Friday.

A very confident team prediction Dave which is proof of the fact that half way through the season Buckle now knows his strongest team! No way is the formation going to be changed to a 3-5-2 either as against our previous match against Wrexham! Ironically, this XI could be better set than last year with less fixtures under their belts overall and with quality players ready to come in as and when the need arises! Wrexham are a vastly improved side and it is these matches that we need to win in particular. Personally, I am quite looking forward to this one!  |

Fantastic, I can now go. This will be 8 weeks in a row. Wife not happy but I will go back early Sat morning. must have a shower before returning as no water again!

Sorry I forgot to check out what you told me at the last match about the big pipe burst up in Wales, will do so before I go to bed, she will think you having an affair mate, all these weekends in Torbay. ;D

 Initial reaction: Two good teams, two reasonable performances and two disappointed managers who are both ruing two dropped points. What a dirty night to make playing a quality game so difficult and credit to BOTH sides for trying. Defending is not easy in a swirling wind and driving rain and the odd mistake just has to be accepted as part of the game in those conditions and anyone who claims otherwise or wishes to be churlish and point the finger at individuals tonight either hasn't played the game or is incapable of watching with a bit of dispassion. The lad who scored for Wrexham made a great run and as they say, you rarely miss from there. You could be pernickety and claim Mansell didn't open his body shape up enough to get his challenge in, but as I said just now, that would be churlish and totally unreasonable to expect perfection in the BSP. I'll tell you what OUR defending was a lot more committed and courageous than highly paid Chelsea on set pieces of late! Roscoe's goal was a real "Roscoe Goal" - he's so good at that art of changing his body position (that is in itself a lot easier when facing the opposition goal than facing your own) and cushioning the ball into the net...................it's his trademark. As for the "missed chances" in the first half....................well that's football and cost us the chance to put them under pressure and force them to come at us a bit more and possibly open themselves up for further punishment. I thought Benyon did ever so well with his contribution for the goal but all in all he is a vastly inferior player to Green off the ball and once the change was made the options for our defenders on the ball grew less and we had to opt for the long game that fell into Wrexham's lap really. Although BOTH managers will be disappointed not to win, I feel in the cold light of day this will be regarded as a point gained by either side rather than two points lost.

My thoughts exactly Merse. After Greens departure we just never had the threat in the channels anymore. Nicholson was made to look a fool after 1 ball down the line went to no one as Benyon reacts to the situation rather than Green who makes the situation happen. This is when Wrexham started to impose a bit in the last 20 mins. I'm quite pleased with the preformance, considering the conditions. The problem we have is we have:- Green who likes to run the channels and is an outlet and a threat with his pace and strength- But doesn't seem to want to pull the trigger. & Benyon who will pull the trigger and hit the target most times- But is slightly detrimental to the build up play and effectiveness of our style. I think we have to be patient with Green in that he appears to be still learning "First Team" football.....................let me expand on that: When a young player is learning the game in the reserves and development teams of a reasonably big club like Cardiff, the emphasis is on composure and getting into good positions before shooting or else hold the ball up and lay it off. This is what I see my young son having drummed into him week on week by his coaches and is something I encourage him to do when I'm out on the park with him. I encourage him to be patient and wait that extra second or two to optimise his angle or for the keeper to make some sort of commitment.................and for an eight year old he has taken that on board in a quite impressive way. Now you can't suddenly take a young player who has spent the past dozen or so years having this drilled into him and expect him to instantly react to the much sharper and more physical challenges that he will face in first team football from opponents who are really geared to play to win rather than develop their own game and poise without the pressure of results. Accept that Green is a young lad making his way in the game (as indeed Benyon is) but remember that he showed with that super finish against Blackpool that he is coming to terms with things although I would question whether Blackpool of the Championship closed him down as quickly as Wrexham of the BSP did tonight..................I don't think they did. |

Working a 14 hour day and driving a total of 568 miles is something I would prefer not to do on a Friday, after driving over a 1000 miles during the week, still I got in the work for the boys to get on with and during this lean spell it will help to keep us all in work. I had arranged all this to happen of the Friday as the match as we know should have been on Thursday night.
I parked my car in my rented garage that is some 300+ yards from my home at 7.42pm and ran in the heavy wind and rain to my home and got in soaking wet, it really was not a good night as far as the weather was concerned in Torbay, so credit has to be given to both teams for the way they tried to play football in such poor conditions.
While I was pleased to received the two phone calls I did during the match, why do people phone when you are trying to watch a match ;D makes it hard to concentrate on the game, but I will give my views as best as I can.
We were clearly the better team in the first half and on a different day could have gone in at half time three goals up, but we did not make the best of the chances created as they often fell to the wrong player. Carlisle was guilty of some mis placed passes, but watching the game from the camera that was set up higher than I normally watch a match from, you could see the picture he had in his head, but I do think others do not read what he is going to do and Carlilse at times does not read what the likes of Green and Sills are going to do, if that makes any sense to you.
Carlisle had three good chances, the fist one he was put in by a clever back heel by Green and Carlisle hit his shot well and the keeper made a good diving save at full stretch. He had a clear header that he put over the bar, on a windy night its hard to get headers right, but he should have scored with his last chance in the first half. Put through on goal, he hit a tame shot straight at their keeper.
Wreham only had one real chance in the first half, Dsane near the halfway line for some reason decided to hit the ball all the way back to Bevan, who could only kick the ball into touch. From the throw in they got the ball into the box and Mansell let the man he should be marking, get in front of him and the Wrexham forward tucked the ball away.
It was really against the run of play, but you felt that as were playing well and we would get a goal back and maybe even go on to win the game. Green was getting so much stronger as the first half wore on and Dsane was adding good width out on the left of the pitch, our defense were coping well with most of what was thrown at them.
Needing a goal Bucks took off Green and put on Benyon, he has been doing this now in all of our recent games and as a result we look a weaker team and start just playing the ball so much longer, with no real effect. Yes Benyon headed the ball back into the middle for Dsane to put the ball away well, but without the running of Green, we ended up hitting long and Wrexham just picking up all the balls.
I do not think Wreham picked up their own game after we scored our goal, we just lost the edge we had in their half of the field without Green being there and I really have to question, why Green is not kept on to complete a match for us. Not having Green winning the ball up front, Wreham were able to start putting the ball forward so much more and if it was not for some great goalkeeping from Bevan we would have lost the game in the end.
Still its a point saved but on a day when a win would have helped in our push for promotion, I really see it as two points dropped and I believe it Green had remained on the pitch we could have won the game and not just end up with a draw. If Burton win today then we really can only hope we do not fall away as we did last season, a play off place is I think the best we can now hope for.
It only took five Min's for the same bunch on the popside to start singing the Refs a C***, but thankfully I did not hear it during the second half, I hope we can get it stopped soon.

Didn't think we would win tonight when Mr Dave wasn't in his usual spot coupled with the fact that we had to attack the Family Stand in the first half.
The game started off well with Green having a chance to score but just took that extra second to compose himself and the chance was gone. I don't think at the moment we can afford (if thats the correct word) to have players who are nor prepared to have a pop - IMO last nights conditions were made for it.
The popside lino soon made his presence felt when the ball struck a Wrexham players hand (I'm sure it had fingers on it) and shook his head when the howls of 'handball' went up. He then seemed unable to make a decision for the rest of the match and deserved abuse he got (a James Hunt indeed).
Couldn't see the Wrexham goal, but by all accounts it was well put away.
Wayne Carlise had what appeared to be two good chances to equalise and/or give us a first half lead. Wayno (IMO) is not playing well enough to start, but with muzza out with a groin strain who would start.
The obvious substitution was made with Benyon for Green and a few minutes later he passed to DSane to equalise.
Bevan did very well to make (I think) a double save.
The ref seemed to catch what the lino had and seemed to make a plethora of mistakes too numerous to mention.
Overall I though we were the better side and should have taken the three points if we had finished better (like the Rushden game) and if we can't start putting these chances away (or get someone in who can) we will struggle to make the play offs. despite the conditions both sides tried to play good football but I thought Wrexham were poor and for the taking.

I certainly DO NOT answer my mobile during a Torquay United match..................I know, I know it could be Bucks pleading with me to get down to Plainmoor sharpish with me boots and I rarely if ever answer when the display tells me it is a "withheld number". Do yourself a favour Dave, make YOUR time YOUR time - you deserve it! |

Bucks' comments on .com are highly significant as I detect he might be thinking that there is now a need to make a fundamental change to the lineup. The point he makes about the lack of a killer instinct is valid, and it might not only be in the more obvious field of the strikers that he is referring to.With the loss of Chris Todd we have lacked our most dangerous attacker of the ball at corners that we gain. Of the two current incumbents, Hodges is far and away the man who thinks most positively in those situations as sadly Woods has never been this way inclined throughout the eight years he has been here. In fact I would go as far to say that Robertson and Ellis are ten times more effective in the opposition's goal mouth than he is, so is the manager about to sacrifice the tremendous reliability of Woods and Hodges as a pairing in the interests of turning draws into victories and making a real attempt to catch Burton, or does he stick with what he has and opt for the "Steady Eddie" pairing of the two old men at the back on who's reliability and consistency much of this largely unbeatable form is dependant and concentrate on holding a "play off position"? Another quandry for the manager!

Merse I did not read it in the same way that you have, to me he is simply saying that the players need to just be more ruthless in and around the box. I agree that not having Todd in the box for corners limits our chances of scoring and that is why I have always felt that Ellis should be playing and not Hodges.
