Touch of deja vu about that game. Remember the fa cup game?

A good win and well deserved, in the end it was TUFC who coped far better with the sending off than Oxford did and super sub Benyon showed once again that he knows where the goal is.
I wanted Christie to start this game, but I can only ask what has happened to the Christie who turned up for his first game for us. Today what we did see of him was very poor and while we do not know how long he will be out injured, on todays showing the bench is the best he can hope for.
For the first 20 Min's Oxford looked the better side and you felt that we would do well to go in at half time on level terms. Then came the first sending off, yes I know in the letter of the law he had to go, but if that had happened in our ground and on the popside of the ground, we might have seen a riot at Plainmoor.
Playing against the ten men. we did not really seem to look like we had an extra man and Oxford seemed to have adjusted their team well enough and still looked like they might still get the result. We had one good chance a great free kick by Nico, low and hard to the right of the goal, but the keeper got down well to push it past the post.
Carayol had a poor first half, often getting into good positions, but his final balls were very poor and that is something he really needs to work on in training. I was not sorry to see Cristie go off and Benyon came on and I did not notice him too much for the remainder of the first half.
Second half and we saw Robertson on for Hodges who took a mighty kick on his leg in the first half, why the ref did not see it I will never know, as that should have been the second sending off for Oxford. Then we saw the 56 second on the pitch substitution, sorry but why take off Green? Carayol should have been the one to go off, I know Green was not in the game all that much being stuck out so wide, but when he had the ball he did well with it most of the time.
Won't say to much about Dsanes sending off as I want to post my views on it on another thread we have running. It was not a sending off, but in a way it seemed to help us and our players were the ones who really responded better losing a player.
Benyon in the right place to score again with his head, it was never stated why the linesman was flagging and you just thought here we go again with our poor luck and poor linemen. The good news the ref was happy with the goal and we were good value for the lead.
Bad mistake on his kick out by the Oxford keeper saw Benyon react the quickest and then run into the box and side foot the ball past the keeper, a good finish and for a young man with so much time to make is mind up, he kept a cool head and and showed why so many TUFC fans feels he is the best finisher at the club.
Paul Buckle, great to see that celebration of yours when we scored, sure made Dave R happy to see it and it showed all those watching on TV how much that goal meant as it looked to be the goal that would give Oxford very little chance of getting anything from the game.

First time, I have seen Torquay play on Setanta - no sign of this curse thing ;D I thought it was a strong battling performance and great to go up there and get a clean sheet. Benyon took his chances and Sills was unlucky not to score before Benyon headed the rebound in. It seemed that the lino tried his best to disallow the second goal Obviously in the same mould as the one from Tuesday night Hopefully this gets Oxford off our back this season and hopefully we can more or less make sure of a play off place with a whole host of winnable games in March I find it very encouraging that we can put in that sort of performance away against one of our promotion rivals and bodes well for the play offs if indeed, as I think we will, get there!

Give the guy a break, he gets fouled - "play on" but to what advantage? The defender then slips and he goes in and wins the ball catching Foster with his trailing foot..................stupid bloody decision and has got to be worth appealing. Agree Merse having seen the replay of the foul, BUT daft (IMO) to go for that type of 'tackle' when the ball is going no where - easy with hindsight though

That's an excellent performance and shere brilliance from our back four and keeper. I thought when Robertson came on he absolutely dominated Kunt Stubble who can only be effective when playing the thug.........................to think there were those on here who wanted to sign him Could and should have been red carded on two occasions.................once for sticking his ugly arse (oh was it his face?) in Woodsie's face and then again for that kick out on Hodges which ended the game for our defender. Caryol showed what a talented repertoire he has but absolutely NO judgement to make a final decision of any sense - he's STILL a development player being played in First Team football just like Green and Benyon and we have to be patient with them. Apart from his two predatory strikes Benyon also showed a degree of improvement in his all round play tonight that shows he is at least maturing if far too slowly in his near two years with us. A note too on Nicky Wroe......................often criticised but compare him with Adam Murray tonight who NEVER got close enough to the strikers in front of him to be effective and ALWAYS took the comfortable passing option rather than the defence splitting stuff Wroe can make. Result? well Murray simply never split our defence did he! Good performance, good result!

It seemed that the lino tried his best to disallow the second goal I think the confusion arose because the ref blew to signal that the ball had crossed the goal line and the lino flagged for the same reason and it was interpreted as having been disallowed.......................certainly by me to the extent that I lost a lot of the euphoria of us scoring much to my wife's amusement who had to tap me on the shoulder and point out that the caption was reading Oxford 0 Torquay 1 whilst play was carrying on (and me too for that matter!)

To be fair Merse, Wroe was not that good in the first half, he gave the ball away a few times and even in the second half made the same sort of mistake that cost us a goal in our last home game, This time it was not on the edge of the box, but he got caught running across the middle of the pitch and sure did not seem to have learned any lessons when he did that in the last game. Robertson did do well, but lets not forget Woods here, who stood up to everything he had to deal with and many might just want to vote for him as the player of the season.

"Letter of the law"? That was a leg breaker Dave, you're making the same sort of judgement there that infuriates professionals when "amateurs" (referees) make them. If you had recalled what Leroy had told us you would realise that "Buckle isn't happy with Green - he keeps having to wave him forward every time he drops back" was a precursor to him being subbed. I've said it before that substitutions aren't some sort of "beauty contest" it isn't necessarily the most out of touch who get changed. Changes are often made to alter shape, playing formation or to introduce a detailed instruction from the manager by way of using the sub who should have that detail in his head rather than an on the pitch player who appears to be constantly missing the point.

What a good result that is! Well done to every player apart from Dsane who did something utterly brainless. It wasn't as bad as the Oxford lad's tackle in the first half but it gave the ref the option of levelling things out. Cuntstable (spell check doesn't appear to be working Dave or for Scunthorpe) deserved a red card for his antics but I thought Woods, Hodges and Robertson dealt with him very well. It's all very well being aggressive and "putting yourself about" but you have to go for the ball as well. He did the same at Plainmoor in the Cup game. One day he'll come up against a Jon Gittens type centre half who will cripple him. The kick-out at Hodges was disgraceful. I thought Woodsie was gonna drop the nut on him at one point. Did anyone else notice that he told the one who watches over us to "feck off" after missing the target with a free header in the first half? I hope Christie and Hodges recover from their injuries quickly. We're gonna need them both! It funny how 11 men struggle against 10 sometimes. But you only have to look back at the FA Cup game with them to see how it galvanises both the players and the crowd. Well done Elliot Benyon for being in the right place for the header and then a top drawer finish for the second. Damm that imbecile Buckle for a) being dellusional and b) concentrating on Weymouth before the game. ;D

I will check out the spell checker Chris I was a fan of Christie after his first game for us, but I have now seen him come on two times as a sub and start todays match and I now wonder, just what he has to offer the team. Benyon has not looked so good when he has started games and always has so much more of an impact coming on as a sub. So I think we may well see Sills and Green starting games for a while with Benyon coming on for Green sometime in the second half of games.

That was the first Setanta game I have enjoyed watching. My telly not being as lucky as chelston's. Apart from the first 15 minutes of 100 miles per hour gusto from Oxford, we were the better side and deservedly came out winners. An impressive performance by the back four - Robertson merely carrying on from where Hodges left off.
Hargreaves and Sills showed their usual battling qualities. Carayol, Green and Wroe showed off the frustrating sides to their game. And agree with others, Christie didn't look up for it, and along with Dsane will, I guess, be out for 3 games.
Clearly the match turner was Benyon as he did what he does best. I don't believe anyone on the pitch other than Benyon would have taken the sting out of Turley's kick and casually slotted past the keeper in such a manner. He effectively killed the game off. And as for the first goal - right place, right time, poachers goal after a good attempt by Sills.
Am enjoying the novelty of a Gulls win in front of the cameras. Thought our fans were in reasonably good voice, as well.

Interesting reading some comments stating this was a good game to watch. Personally, I found it excrutiating!!
In the first half, we were woeful. Lacking any creativity or spark. Even when Oxford went down to 10 men, they still looked the more likely to score in the first half.
It was only when D'sane got sent off that we really started to look comfortable. I didn't think either tackle was a red card to be honest and it only proved that the referee didn't have a clue. He wasn't helped by the linesmen though!!
Like many others by the sound of it, I sat there cursing the tele at the Benyon header. It looked for a while like the lino had flagged and I couldn't believe what I was watching. Kind of ruined the goal for me.
Never mind, as the yellow goal machine that is Elliott Benyon killed off any hope Oxford had with a very well taken finish. I always felt he would score when he got in that situation and I wouldn't have wanted it to fall to any other Torquay player.
This was a must win game against an in form side. Glad we came out of it with a win in the end, but there's plenty of room for improvement in my eyes.

That result was just what the doctor ordered.
Penty of postives all over the park - The back four were very solid from the off and did well not to react to the vile Constable. Mansell did particularly well to stop him putting them one up during the first half. After a bit of a shocking start Hargreaves and Wroe won the midfield battle - Wroe was well off the pace during the first half but got stronger and stronger as the space opened up in the second. Sills was pretty dominant in the air all night and once on Benyon gav an almost flawless display of a fox in the box style striker.
I agree with the general consensus that the Dsane challenge did not merit a straight red, but it was sheer stupidity from Roscoe to even give the ref the chance to even things out. You've got o wonder wht goes on in these guys heads sometimes.
As always, the odd moan - How frustrating is it to watch Carayol? Last week when coming on at Kettering the guy looked a world beater. Having rightly earnt his start he gave one of the sloppiest performances I have seen in a long time - right down to conceding a foul throw! i'm amazed that he stayed n for the whole ninety minutes. I appreciate the need to be patient, but some of his final balls tonight were woeful. The Christie injury was just waiting to happen - The guy is not fit enough for this level. John Gayle with a bigger belly. Thought we had seen the last of these signings with the end of Mike Bateson.
