For the second time this evening I've pressed the "preview" button and my comments have disappeared. In the meanwhile somebody beats me to it and declares the debate about Paul Buckle's comments as a "fuss about nothing". Exactly!
Here are the words I read in my Western Morning News today:
"It just felt silent, dead, and it's got to be better," said Buckle. "We have to try and raise the roof at home. I didn't think the atmosphere was terrific tonight, if I am honest.
"It did not feel like we are third in the league and it needs to be better. This is a tough league and there are no easy games. It's unforgiving and it's difficult to get out of.
"Like I said, I didn't feel there was a buzz in the crowd and I don't know why. It's not going to be easy getting out of this division, it's going to be a mission and it's a mission a lot of clubs have found very difficult over the years.
"It's not going to be easy for Torquay United. We need to pull together, we need to get atmosphere in this ground, whether we are playing teams at the top or the bottom, we need everyone to get right behind the team."
Comments in my opinion - unless I'm being naive - about quietness and flatness. Nothing more, nothing less.
I fear we're becoming forensic in our attempts to dissect any interview Paul Buckle gives to the media. The poor bugger can't win. Generally he's word perfect - careful, positive, even a wee bit bland. One word uttered that we don't like and the balloon goes up. Damned if he does; damned if he doesn't. A metaphor for a deeper issue I guess.
Now let's see if "preview" works this time....

Merse while I applaud your rallying call to supports to start supporting, I think you are talking out you ass about people being criticised. I pay to watch a football match and I really don't think that just because I may not cheer on the team and because I feel they don't deserve it, I should then think it is perfectly fair and correct for some one like Buckle to criticise me. You're a fine example with that response to just what I am talking about. You're going to take the self important "Me, me ,me" attitude that led you to boycott the last home game as well rather than get into the "let's win promotion effort" People like you, want transporting up North and sticking amongst a properly inspirational crowd who week in week out play a part in creating a supportive and somewhat hostile to the opposition atmosphere that makes their ground into somewhere the opposition fear to tread. Places like Elland Road, Hillsborough and St James Park (the REAL one) would provide an object lesson to moaning, weaseling little blighters who go on and on about the price of pasties, the price of admission and standing on yellow lines. Tell you what, forget those stadiums, just take a trip to little old Abbey Stadium or Aldershot's Rec and you'll see what I'm on about. Whilst I'm a quiet observer of the game, I am prepared to stand up and cheer when the goals go in (as long as I'm not sitting in an entirely inappropriate place) and I certainly don't go in for singing the praises of a player who's been slung out on his arse by the manager!

Dave thats not the full interview on the BBC link as you can hear it kick in.The first thing he mentioned was the fans. I was quite shocked he chose to start a post match interview in that way and it didn't help my mood at all. But what's done is done and 24hrs after we can all calm down and move on to Mansfield.

Dave is right, it's not necessarily just about his criticism of the crowd - it's true the atmosphere wasn't great. But at some point, he needs to start putting his own performance under the miscroscope too. As i said earlier, if our influence on the results is really that great, perhaps those of us that turn up every week should be on a percentage of his wage? There was plenty wrong with the performance last night, and i remain unconvinced the biggest contributor was the support levels. Fonda, you're once again going into one of your "serial spouting bollox" modes........................use "another site" for that and kindly engage your brain before posting on here, we're better than that!

What an absolute fuss over nothing and blown up out of all proportion. In my view he had every right to say those things and you could tell he was bloody angry because he felt a section his own supporters were waiting to stick the knife in at the earliest opportunity. Why was it justified, because it was all fact. Plainmoor has this recuring habit of becoming like the scene at a wake, its so sillent sometimes you wondetr if you realy are at a football match. Not a single word there offended me and what he said was totaly justified and I would have been more concerned if he had ignored stating that we must ALL pull together to get out of this league. Its uterly ridiculous after our recent run of results that this blip should gain such a response. Well said pete... Hope that the "other" site doesn't shut down any day soon, i had a look earlier this evening and we could be commenting on a thread named "I demand an apology Mr.Buckle" ;D - its hilarious stuff... Can't remember when a manager has so divided opinion at TUFC more than Paul Buckle has, over the last 12 months. Granted its the BSP, and not the league but i would be interested to see how his record compares with other managers in our recent history.....it must be very favourable. It certainly doesn't make a lot of sense that despite sitting pretty comfortably in a play off spot, with a squad that most agree have still got a fair chance of promotion, a fair chunk of our support seem to be unable to accept a poorer performance every now and then. Maybe part of the reason for the crowds sombre, irritable mood has something to do with the desperate recession that is hitting our area so hard....most folk are worried about their jobs, football grounds are famous for people "letting off steam". Makes you wonder what it would be like if we were sitting in the position of the table that our opponents this saturday, a slightly bigger club than us, Mansfield currently are....

It will be interesting to see the reaction of the Plainmoor crowd at the next home game.
It's always a bit worrying for any business when they're not getting enough customers through the door, but to then risk alienating those customers you still have is a strategy not many would pursue.
Bucks wasn't helped by the the fact that TISWAS (Torquay Independent Steve Woods Appreciation Society) held its inaugural meeting at last nights match but I don't think he can really blame us.
Incidently, 'TISWAS' T shirts should be on sale near the ground at the next home game, very reasonably priced at a fiver. The rear of the shirt even features a cleverly interwoven 'm'&'W' motif symbolising the Mansell-Woods solidarity!
Although I believe a complimentary T shirt is being sent up to one of our supporters in the London area in the hope that he will wear it with pride as he drives around town, I'm sure the rest of you will agree that at todays prices a fiver isn't a lot in order to show your support for our cruelly exiled defensive Legend.

[/quote Some are. It was very obviously a tongue-in-cheek comment Merse, but you carry on. NB: I clicked 'Modify' instead of 'Quote' initially. I obviously didn't alter Merse's fine post at all.

Its me me, me, me. merson who is here supporting the club and paying to watch home games and putting money into the club.
Its people like you with your attitudes that make people ask why they even bother going to games, I go to what I games I want and for my own reasons, I did not boycott any game, just faced with a choice of watching TUFC or my son play and the choice being made easy by someone who claims he is close to the club and therefore knows all their views, having an attitude much like yours.
I and 29 others will be at the next home game supporting the team and putting extra money into the club so don't you go questioning my support,

But at some point, he needs to start putting his own performance under the miscroscope too. Sure. At home? At work? I doubt he doesn't. But on Radio Devon? If it were the latter it would be counter-productive, in my opinion.

To admit the performance wasn't great and will be rectified? I'd appreciate that kind of honesty personally.

Can't remember when a manager has so divided opinion at TUFC more than Paul Buckle has, over the last 12 months. It's astonishing isn't it? Try explaining it to supporters of other clubs. I fear it will continue whatever the outcome of this season. Imagine we're 14th in Div 2 this time next season. Will there be joy and happiness all round? No bloody chance...
