tufc01, you do seem to have problems with your reading tonight, yes Woods did tell the HE he wanted to stay and train and play if required, in the very same article Bucks also said that is what Woods wanted to do, but he(Bucks) declined the offer. Like merse you have never been a Woods lover and maybe not getting piped of deck has left you a little sore If Woods was so bad he would not have lasted eight seasons and no I would not work for any boss who failed to value my contribution and only felt I was worth just a half time draw. Dave, we must BOTH be struggling with our reading tonight. At no point have i said, or inferred that Woods was a bad player. In fact in you re-read my Altricham match report i actually said that whilst Ellis played well i felt we missed Woods and that Ellis should only be used as understudy to Woods. I also believe that Woods got good write ups in my last few match reports. You are right, i wasn't a great fan of Woods. Last season i felt he was poor, the boxing day game at Exeter was a particularly bad game for me and epitomized his lack of pace, poor postional sense and he had the turning circle of the QE2 and on top of all that he used to jump all over his opponent giving away countless, needless free kicks in danger areas. HOWEVER, this season he has proved me wrong, gone are the climbing all over opponents and his distribution from defence has not been bettered by any of our centre backs. I stand by every thing i have said tonight on this issue. It is very rare that i will come back and say anything else after i have made my initial post, however this time i feel strongly that there is a misconception on what has happened. There are TWO sides to every story. Only one side has been put forward and some people have gone for it hook, line and sinker. Yes, if Woods hadn't rocked the boat and forced the issue and then more, then undoubtedly he would have been a key asset to the run for promotion. However, he did so in the best interests of the squad then there was only one possible outcome. If we were to allow sentiment to run the club then our midfield would consist of Kevin Hill & Matt Hockley, with Simon Rayner in goal and Lee Phillips up front. Would we be in the position we are now under that scenario? I think not. [glow=red,2,300]you have never been a Woods lover[/glow] i hope that you are not suggesting anything by this just because i was in the Navy

It may be frustrating for us not understanding why things happen, but I think we should all accept that the possibility that they are acting stupidly is far smaller than the possibility that they are acting as they are because they know a lot more about what is going on than we do. At the risk of repeating myself, it may be frustrating for us not understanding why things happen, but I think we should all accept that the possibility that they are acting stupidly is far smaller than the possibility that they are acting as they are because they know a lot more about what is going on than we do.

No problem Barton, you do bring so much to the forum, I think we have worn this thread out and tomorrow I will put up the match thread for our Saturday game, maybe its time to move on and get back to doing what we do best and that is being true supporters.

Whatever the rights and wrongs, differing viewpoints etc etc the fact remains that the huge number of posts on the subject on various boards suggests to me that the timing and handling of the whole affair has been farcical in the extreme and totally unprofessional. .......................and who instigated the timing?

Cheers Dave. I'll be silent tomorrow as I've just been offered an evening out at a football ground known as Honeycroft......where? Whilst you'll be at Uxbridge FC, I'll be at a place known as "Al Queda"..............well it is if you're a Spurs fan! Look out for Mark Nicholls playing for the home team Bartie, described as a "former Torquay player" even though he also "played for Chelsea" - he is a big fish around those parts. Dunno about the piscean qualities but he certainly is big these days. Anthony's development group are to be taken to the Emirates Stadium tomorrow night after training as part of their football education. It's Arsenal v Hull City in the FA Cup Quarter Final and for every child's seat there is a "dads' seat" too...................and none of your usual crappy down low in the corner rubbish - these are top tier, twenty rows back. After all this IS Arsenal and there IS The Arsenal Way and the finer points of shape, pattern of play and movement to be observed from on high! ;D

I've been enjoying the chance this debalce has provided for Merse's double standards to show themselves. The players for whom Merse seems to have a personal vendetta are spared none of his incisive and well-composed diatribe, which is turned to excellent defensive affect for those he approves of. I am thus proposing a new term for our lexicon: the Mersonal Vendetta; a fiercely and consistenly held irrational personal vendetta. To see differing values to the squad in individual players does not infer double standards. The FACT that certain others blindly assume I have a "vendetta" against Woods is both lazy on their part and idiotically following the tune of those who constantly refer to the first time I encountered the guy, which incidentally, was instigated by him; not I - and only came about due to his family butting in whilst I was talking to Kevin Hill and Matt Hockley. Although I didn't rate him as much above a mediocre player at the higher level we were once at, he does have his following amongst the support. Now that he is at a comfortable level for a player of his experience, I would say he appears much more competent though far too short to be a central defender of any great worth to any team in this physical league. So to attach the term "irrational" to the description YOU use (vendetta) only validates itself because it is YOUR description, not mine. I would say therefore, that to describe me as having an "irrational vendetta" is as irrational as your serial sniping at my views.

Jerry I am. In my view Woods has been playing exceptionally well & I've seen most games at Plainmoor this season & felt he was a strong contender for 'Man of the Match' in the majority of them. My initial reaction was that Woods must have been demanding a 3 year contract extension on £50,000 a week for us to decide to dispense with his services. I really don't see that his play is going to deteriorate so fast that he's not worth a 12 month contract. Woods is my Player of the Season by some considerable margin & removing him from the team for the rest of the season will surely weaken it. What sort of signal it gives to other players knowing you can play as well as Steve has & still be offered nothing is anyones guess. Whether Buckles decision to play a deliberately weakened team will still get him the results he needs...time will tell. If anyone is interested in Gilbert's observations on the treatment of Woods here's a link... gilbert-the-gull.vox.com/

Unfortunately, the efforts of the consortium deserve more people through the turnstiles, but it's not happening. They can't continue to fund us in the same manner they have done up to now - something has to give. It's a shame for Woodsie that we have other central defenders under contract for next season, but that is the situation. It appears Lee Hodges (who's how old?) required a 2-year deal to get him here last summer. The merits of that are open for debate too i suppose. But with him, Todd, Ellis and Brough under contract, Woodsie's 'Indian Summer' has come just a little too late. With Woods gone, i only hope the decidely murky situation regarding Chris Robertson's future is sorted soon (does anyone know where he stands currently?). He and Ellis are the future, so the sooner they are tied down the better for me.

He and Ellis are the future, so the sooner they are tied down the better for me. With regard to Lee Hodges, I cant recall anyone questioning the merits of offering him a 2 year deal at the time we signed him! OK, so he is 35 years old (2 years younger than Greavsie) and he is three years older than Woodsie - but the fact is that just 12 months ago, he was deemed good enough to make 30 appearances for Plymouth in the Championship, and it was considered a major coup for us that he chose to come here. I believe he had offers higher up the League but chose to come here because he wanted to stay local and we were prepared to offer him 2 years. As for Chris Robertson, my understanding is that he is out of contract in the summer and it will not necessarily be just down to Paul Buckle as to whether he signs a new deal. I believe that Robbo, frustrated at the lack of first team opportunities last year, opted to go on the transfer list in the summer, but that the club decided to take up the option of another year that he had written into his contract when he first signed for us in the summer of 2007. If it had been down to the player, I get the impression he would have decided to move on, but quite rightly we tied him down to another year and would have demanded a fee in order to put off any potential suitors. I guess there is a possibility that Robbo may still feel his future lies elsewhere, but perhaps with the decision to release Woodsie our chances of keeping him have been strengthened somewhat as maybe now he can see a better chance of regular football for himself, and indeed Mark Ellis come to that?

Does the fact we offered Hodges a 2-year deal when evidently nobody else would indicate anything? He is a winger/left-midfielder/full-back - so presumably it was with that in mind that he was signed. But he's seemingly only been able to play at centre-half for us (due to fitness?). I do think he's done pretty well there, but has he done significantly better than Robbo or Ellis would have done? So in that sense was it a good signing? I suppose hindsight is a wonderful thing.
I thought it interesting that Bucks mentioned Ellis specifically when talking about Woodsie's departure. There was no mention of Robbo. I'd love to think Robbo will stay, as i think he is an excellent defender, but i'd be surprised if he does. Todd and Hodges will be first choice next season probably, with Ellis waiting in the wings and Brough also presumably staking a claim. Will a player of Robbo's quality want to be waiting around for scraps? Doubtful.
So if Robbo went too, would 4 centre-halfs be enough (when one of them is apparently a midfielder by trade)? I don't obviously know how high Woodsie's wages are, relatively speaking, but it'd be ironic after all this if we ended up signing another centre-back anyway.
